“I swear before the Shadow God that you Gidyon, my King, are my friend and always will be. I swear that I will never forsake you, nor will I leave you.”

No man has ever sat on the throne of the Second Country, until now. Elen-ai of the Family of Assassins has returned to the Palace to assist King Gidyon in securing his place on the throne. While she might know that the burden of rule is secure on Gidyon's young shoulders, many cannot abide the breach of tradition, while others see an opportunity to further their own position.

With allegiances forming across the Queendom Gidyon and Elen-ai desperately seek a way to secure his position, but the peace and stability of the Second Country seem increasingly in doubt.

As civil war becomes an ever more distinct outcome Elen-ai faces a battle of her own, for one cannot be both an assassin, and friend to a King.

Alice Jane Boer-Endacott was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, amid a home filled with books and cats. From her earliest days as a bored young child she has always used her imagination to escape the drudgery of reality by creating works of fiction. Her first manuscript was a gripping saga involving a ghost horse creatively named Ghost, written at the tender age of nine.

After procrastinating assignments during her Masters degree in Executive Management and Corporate Anthropology, and discovering that she had accidentally written three novels, in a not-so-shocking-twist, she decided to become an author.

Her first book, QUEENDOM OF THE SEVEN LAKES, was written at a time when she was playing Dragon Age Inquisition (and is thus living proof that computer games are socially valuable activities). Alice’s hobbies include eating, reading, writing, woodworking, and having deeply analytical discourses about contemporary media with her three cats.

Read it for the second time and I'm still very much in love with this series and these characters!! I'm so sad to be leaving behind Elen-ai and Gidyon though!

***************************************************

The second book in the Legends of the Godkissed Continent series by A. B. Endacott and oh boy did I love it just as much as the first one or what! This book continues to follow Elen-ai and Gidyon, if you haven't read the beauty that is Queendom of the Seven Lakes I don't want to spoil you! go check out my review of Queendom and come back once you've read it! There will be spoilers for the first book ahead!

Now that Gid is to be the King of this Queendom, some of the families have taken up stances against this. There are various allegiances forming across the different high-born families of the Seven Lakes who either believe that a man should not be in power or they want to take the power for themselves. Some think that Gidyon is not educated enough to rule, but Elen-ai is confident that he shall make a great King.

I was very happy as I read through to confirm that there is still no romance between Elen-ai and Gidyon. I personally wouldn't mind them getting together, but this is either a non-existent or incredibly slow romance which is a very nice change from so many insta-loves we get in books.

The likelihood of an outbreak of a civil war starts to become a reality as we continue through the novel and this weighs heavily on all of our characters shoulders. There is also a personal battle that Elen-ai is facing as she cannot be an assassin of the Family at the same time as being a friend and advisor to the King. She has to choose between two worlds, her best friend, or her family.

Yet again Alice's writing is absolutely gorgeous and engaging, I was fully absorbed into this world and the events happening within it that I was able to sit and read this in the living room as my parents watched TV and completely ignore the programme that was on! I am so excited for this book to get more hype behind it and have a much larger reader base as more people find this amazing series! This high fantasy book with a badass female lead and interesting political action could be great for both Young Adult readers and those that read more within the "adult" genre.

I am really looking forward to reading The Ruthless Land (the 3rd book in the series), although I won't lie, I'm a little sad that it won't be following Elen-ai and Gid and is instead based elsewhere in the Continent! I'm sure I'll love it just as much, but I have definitely become very invested in these characters and I really hope that we come back to them again in the future and have Elen-ai as our PoV once again. However, damn am I excited to be seeing another part of this world! So much has been hinted at within the first two books but coming into this third one there is so much potential and so much scope for what could happen here.

Essentially, get on this bandwagon now! You'll definitely regret it if you don't!

“Everybody was looking to Gidyon - the king who was summoning the sun amid the darkness...it was impossible to know who knelt first...bowing their heads in reverence to the king - their king, who held the sun in his hands.”

King of the Seven Lakes was absolutely amazing. I can not believe that it was even better than book one. A.B. Endacott has become my second favorite auto-buy author. Her debut and second book show that she is truly a remarkable writer of high-fantasy. The book starts off with a quick rundown of what happened in Queendom of the Seven Lakes. The world-building really went even further because we got to learn more about the whole kingdom/multiple kingdoms (this duology is set the second kingdom.) We also got to really learn more about all the seven families. I was very surprised by how detailed this author went with the story but she didn't make it boring. I was completely transfixed by this world and I couldn't stop reading. It was a major page turner and I finished it in two days. This duology doesn't just end here though! When the book ends you get a snippet of the two other series in this whole series. Each series takes place in the four different kingdoms. This duology was set in the second kingdom. The next series will be in the third kingdom and the third series will be set in the fourth kingdom. The second to last kingdom is set in either the 1st or 5th kingdom. Then the last series will feature all the main characters from each series for one epic finale. I am so excited to see where this author takes this grand story and I recommend this author's works 100%.

What I Liked

1) Plot/Pace

"I honestly don't know," Kaine admitted, moving his hand to the small of Elen-ai's back and running it up and down her spine. She arched her back in pleasure at the sensation of his fingertips on her skin. "I've never been with an assassin before."

Halen Katan is still after the throne. Instead of trying to get the throne by being given it so now he will take it by force. The people of Queendom don't want a king on the throne and the whole second kingdom is on the brink of war. Elen-ai, Gidyon and his uncles must find a way to keep Halen from the throne and stop a war. But the war is inevitable and they all must work to find a way win this war that seems unwinnable. The whole kingdom is filled with tension and Elen-ai must find a way to be both an assassin and a friend to the king. The pace of this story was impeccable. I was never bored because the story kept at a moving pace and something was always happening. The way the author writes about the political agendas and the war itself was masterful because she did it in a way that kept me on my toes and entertained.

2) Writing/World-Building/Setting

'Gidyon was a ruler who did care, and for that, Elen-ai would follow him to the end of the world.'

As stated above, Endacott's writing is truly phenomenal for a debut author. She sets the tone for a truly incredible high fantasy. This story has it all. The kingdoms, the magic, the villains, the war, the assassins, and more. Her writing was something exceptional and truly remarkable. I love how she wrote the friendship between Gidyon and Elen-ai and that she kept it as a friendship. They were truly best friend goals. The trust they had in one another was so beautiful. Honestly, I can't talk about her writing enough. Please if you have any interests in fantasy stories especially high/epic fantasy you must read her stories. We also got to see diversity in sexuality and race for characters.

3) Characters

"My lord Katan, surely politics are far more deadly than swordcraft," she replied struggling to keep the venom from her tone."

Elen-ai is just as badass as she was in Queendom of the Seven Lakes. We got to see her and Gidyon become even closer and develop a romantic relationship with Kaine (one of Gidyon's uncles.) I loved seeing the growth in her and the inner battles we get to see her work through. Her fighting sequences are so dope to read about. Gidyon transforms into such an amazing King and truly proves why he deserves his throne. But we also see some of his inner battles with his mother's mistakes and the struggle to gain the respect and backing he deserves. I also loved Kaine. He is Gidyon's youngest uncle and he was very charismatic, witty, and incredibly sweet. Then we had Nikalus who was a bit more minor but he was Gidyon's second oldest uncle. He was more soft spoken and was a smart man. Silius was the oldest uncle and wise also he was cannon gay. He was the most outspoken one. I love that we get to see more of Elen-ai’s family members and how they interact with their home and how they fight. Also, the villain so to speak Halen was amazingly written because he really kept me on edge.

"I swear before the Divine One that you, Elen-ai of the Family and Shadow God, are my friend and that friendship is something I will never deny or turn away from."
“I swear before the Shadow God that you Gidyon, my King, are my friend and always will be. I swear that I will never forsake you, nor will I leave you.”

4) Romance

This was something I loved. Seeing Elen-ai start a romance with Kaine was truly interesting. Every moment they had together was sweet, hot, adorable, and everything in between. I truly loved seeing her find love and I loved how the author didn't make it Gidyon because they were the perfect best friends and a love for them wouldn't make sense.

I felt this was a perfect duology ending but I can't wait to see them in more book in the whole universe.

King of the Seven Lakes by A.B. Endacott

4/5

To start this review, I’m just going to say I am so happy that there was no massive second book hangover. I am left asking a lot of questions like what is possibly going to happen in the next book.

The thing I loved the most about this book, well so far both books is Gidyon and Elen-ai’s friendship. It’s so wholesome and I love the dynamic of how the act around each other and it was so great to see a male/female friendship not turn into anything more than just a friendship. (sorry that was probably a spoiler oops). I also love Gidyon he truly is a great person to be the King of the queendom. For the rest of the review I’m just going to focus on some key points I wrote down while reading this great book.

My first note is omg I want a Kittanae, I love this animal that Alice has created it is so unique and great to read about. They seem so fluffy I just want to give it a smoosh and of course go for a ride across the second country with Gidyon and Elen-ai on one of them!

This is probably a little spoilery but I was so shocked when the Family betrayed their neutrality. I honestly thought they would not participate in the events of this books, and was happily surprised when they did. The Family seem like very good but very nonaccepting of outside ideas type of people, especially the grandparents so I loved their involvement in this book.

Another aspect of this book I liked was Elen-ai and Kaine’s relationship, I thought it was so cute and heartwarming they found comfort in each other, but I have to admit Kaine is the only Uncle I like. Sil gets on my nerves, and seems like a cranky person. I do love Kaine though, even if they gave Elen-ai a very hard choice to make.

My final point of notes is, WHAT ARE GIDYON AND ELEN-AI, I’m not going to say anything else on that, if you want to know what I’m talking about you’ll have to read the book. I also highly recommended you read this series its such an easy read and such a new unique fantasy its amazing! I will definitely be purchasing book 3!

Elen-ai is an assassin and has accepted a rather unusual job. Rather than kill, she's been hired to protect the Heir of the Queendom. Soon she's much more involved in politics and mysteries than she'd like to be.

The world building of the godkissed continent was really well done - the delicate power balance between the 7 high families was fantastic. I especially loved how the balance was maintained by having the monarch only ever be a queen, so that an heir could be born without the father being known, therefore no family would be elevated above another. I also really enjoyed the low magic setting - it was refreshing to have a fantasy world that wasn't soaked in magic.

As much as I missed the angst I'm so used to in YA novels, it was great to see a male and female being such close friends without having any romantic drama! This is definitely something we don't see enough of. We did get our much needed angst in the latter part of this duology - and it was deliciously done!

I do think the book could have benefited from having some scenes from Gidyons point of view, but overall this was a fantastic read! I look forward to diving into the godkissed continent again.

Thank you again to the author for an eARC of this incredible duology, in exchange for an honest review.

I dived straight into this book when I finished book 1 and again it did not disappoint - the intrigue and the drama from the families when Gidyon took the throne and the way the power struggles took place was incredibly interesting.

I love that this still isn't a romance focused book and still focuses on the characters, intrigue, politics and struggles of the realm while also allowing room for Gidyon and Elen-ai to grow and change. Elen-Ai is one of my favourite female characters already and I hope we get to see more of her one day!

I highly recommend purchasing the ebook version of the duology which will be releasing on November 15 - there is some bonus material that you will love if you are a fan of the books!

I WANT MORE. The way Elen-ai's relationships develop throughout this book leave wanting more, I want all the details of all the moments. And that ending... absolutely flew through the last few chapters only to wonder if there was more of the book missing. I loved all the short stories that accompanied the relaunch of this series and would settle for a book just about Queen Latana. My only complaint for this book/series is that it wasn't drawn out more, both the book and storyline (but ony because I'm selfish and want more).

I really enjoyed this second installation of the series. I will admit, for a fantasy, I wish it was a little longer so there could be more character development and further development in the plot. Despite this, they were still done incredibly well and I did almost finish it in one sitting! Can’t wait to pick up the other books in the same realm now ☺️
I really enjoyed the characters, the amazing world building which did continue and the tensions amongst the families.

This is the second book in this series and just as enjoyable. Characters are well drawn and one feels compelled to find out what happens to them. I have enjoyed getting lost within the Seven Lakes and feel very connected to both Elen-ai and Gidyon.

In the second Country, The Queen is dead, Murdered and she had set up her son named Gidyon who is a very young... too young to be elevated from his princedom, in the wake of his mother the Queen who has named him as her successor in advance of her murder. Gidyon is to be named the King and yet the country is not willing to accept him, or to bend their knee to a male ruler. They are all mind-blocked to the way it has always been, and that the whole of the country's peoples' lives will be turned up-side down for Gidyon to become their King. Elen-Ai on the other hand sees him as a remarkably smart and levelheaded boy wiser than his few years but in spite of it all, sees him as the right choice and is willing to stand by his side and protect his life, committing her life to his service, even against her family's opinions, to the point that she might be asked to leave the guild and never return to the only home she has ever known.
This is one book that needs to be read in its proper order! And I recommend this book highly!

Firstly, and I have to say this, it was too short! I love the characters so much and their friendships and didn't want the story to be over😢

This book (along with Queendom) were very easy reads (for me anyway), despite being action packed and a fast paced story. During King I did have a moment where I went 'this storyline and the events are happening really really fast.' But after that thought occurred, I then looked back at what happened and realised that realistically, the events occurring are in fact fast paced. And so any doubt and question as to why it was moving fast disappeared.

I think what makes me love King (and Queendom) so much is how different it is to anything else I have read, though at the same time still represent social/cultural/other issues and problem solving we have in reality.
We live in a world where, sadly, one sex does in fact dominate the other overall (which sucks! EQUALITY FOR ALL), and this book has flipped the gender roles yet still kept relevant issues present. This especially in relation to the people of the country, and the leading heads of the powerful houses/families, trying to come to terms with changing customs. Where some can accept Gidyon as King because they know he would make a great one, others (despite knowing he is a good person) can't handle the idea of him with a crown and be a male. This of course leads to war.

Through the internal and external struggles that both Elen-ai and Gidyon face, their friendship was so good to read and see grow. And Elen-ai, seriously, is a badass with a soft heart. And she knows it too! She knows she cares and knows she is allowed to care, despite being raised an assassin and capable of killing a person. (And she has a love for cats #relatable).

I love the connection and references to the characters faiths in their actions and decisions throughout the story. And it was interesting to see how the multiple faiths worked alongside eachother and what their faith brings to them.

I can't wait to see these characters return in upcoming stories and also can't wait to delve deeper into the other countries surrounding this one.
