It’s clear to doctor Gavin Morris and ghost hunter Annabelle Smith that no ordinary prairie fires destroyed one small frontier town, leaving few survivors. Now, the strange flames are threatening larger cattle towns to the east.
Can the unlikely pair decipher the clues before time runs out, or are they doomed to burn with more than passion? ------ Content warning: this western paranormal romance contains both strong religious themes and graphic sex scenes.
Hello, I am Simone Beaudelaire, romance enthusiast, freelance proofreader, and novice author. In real life, I'm a wife, mother, and full time high school French teacher, which doesn't leave me a lot of time for my hobby. Of course, that hasn't stopped me yet. I hope I can connect with other readers of romance (and other genres. I love to read, and through my beta reading group, I have recommendations in all different categories.)
*This is my favorite Simone Beaudelaire book yet!*
This story is a unique paranormal western romance.
Yes, it is historical fiction, and true to her commitment to detail, Simone recreated the small frontier settlements and cattle towns of Northern Texas in 1885 with precision.
The setting of the story makes it a western romance, but it isn't about gunslinging outlaws or train robberies. Now, this is a paranormal tale that delved into ghosts, demons, psychics, and faith. Also true to her style, Simone doesn't just turn up the heat on the hot Texas prairies. This bestselling author entices the reader with a steamy romance that fans embers into flames!
Dr. Gavin Morris is trying to find survivors after a town caught fire in the old west. He knows those he finds have only a very small chance of living. If the burns didn't kill them infection probably will. He can hardly believe how so many died in such a quick time. It's a very strange fire. Annabelle Smith is a medium. She is drawn to the dead who need her help to pass over to the other side. The burnt out town has many who she can help. Our heroine is used to people thinking she is crazy or shunning her because of her abilities. Our hero is very open minded considering he is a man of science. That's because of his special relationship with his mother. A paranormal romance set in the old west makes this a very different type of story. Our heroine is just about as innocent as can be. She is also incredibly strong, thanks to her faith in what she does. Her personal history however means she is maybe too independent for her own good. A thoroughly enjoyable story that will keep you interested from the first to last page.
I did read the entirety of this book. The back and forth between the two main characters constantly switching POV drove me crazy.m if that had been stabilized it wouldn't have needed to switch between third and first and italicize all the internal thoughts. Finally it got too religious but in a fashion that felt awkward and contradictory to the rest of the story. So it just didn't work for me.
If you love paranormal, historical western, & romance, you'll most likely enjoy this writer's version. I hope a sequel is forthcoming! Now I'm going to read more of Simone's books!
The dialogue between these two insta-love ninnies' made me want to bash my head into a wall.
This actually did start off pretty good and had me intrigued until the insta-love showed up. I know it's probably hard for authors to write about quick connections between MCs without it coming across as corny, but this author really failed--- it crashed and burned quickly.
This is my third book by this author. I've enjoyed them all. This was an interesting idea of a paranormal historical romance. I like both genres. It made for a great mix. Annabelle and Gavin made a great team fighting the supernatural. Maybe they will have more adventures later together?
Belief mAkes it all possible!Good over evil!prayers, priest, mother ghost Very interesting will check out on Catholic beliefs!more books more adventures Amen!
This exciting paranormal romance is set in Texas in 1886. Quite a page turner. There is some explicit sex, but not too much.
I am pleased to see that it is book 1. That means I can spend more time with these characters, and see how they continue their development, and if Gavin can come to terms with his own unacknowledged talent.
Although I don't usually enjoy graphic sex scenes, there wasn't too much in this book and it didn't bother me. What I can't stand is what seems to be a story simply to carry the sex scenes.
And I love the cover.
It is an excellent read.
Story.
A mysterious fire breaks out in the southern states of the US destroying a complete village and killing most of the inhabitants.
Doctor Gavin Morris is trying his best to help the dying and injured when he meets Annabelle Smith. She appears to be speaking to the ghosts of the dead.
Gavin does not believe her, but she explains how she has been called here to help the dead on their way. She is emaciated and obviously poor, so Gavin feels sorry for her and wishes to help.
Not to give too much away, there are more inexplicable fires, and the pair decide to investigate. During their investigations they grow closer.
They find themselves in a terrifying situation, being stalked by an entity far more frightening and dangerous than the ghosts.
Characters
I liked the main characters. They had their struggles with both the paranormal and the romantic feelings developing between them.
They developed nicely throughout the novel, with Gavin reluctantly accepting Annabelle's work, and the fact of the ghosts.
Secondary characters were also well developed, including the ghosts, some of which had to be told they had died. They also kept their worldly characters, especially one rather unpleasant woman.
Writing
I thought that Ms Beaudelaire gave us a clear feeling of both time and place. I had a clear picture in my head of every setting, and believed in the characters.
