Amargosa is under occupation. But a fallen starship may turn the tide for the resistance. JT Austin, Davra Andraste, and Eric Yuiwono disobey orders to reach this ship. Along the way, they discover that not every enemy is Gelt, not every ally is human, and humans and Gelt are not the only intelligences on Amargosa.

"Get used to turning pages—Hottle starts with a literal bang and doesn’t let up. This is YA military scifi as it should be.” R.A. McCandless, author of the Flames of Perdition series

Writer TS Hottle has a whole universe to explore. There are plenty of books and series within his "Compact Universe" of stories. This trilogy, "The Amargosa Arc," is not a bad place to start. It's where I started as I was unfamiliar with Hottle's writing until I read "Second Wave" - the second book in this trilogy. Readers could probably benefit by starting with book 1, "The Children of Amargosa," but it's not a requirement. (I received a free copy from the publisher to review.)

This is a pretty good stand alone novel and picks up with three teens - JT, Davra, and Eric - investigating a fallen starship on their colony world of Amargosa. Aliens called the Gelt have seized the planet and the young heroes have all lost friends and family (book 1). Now they face new challenges - enemies from within their ranks and an encounter with another intelligent lifeform - on their way to investigate this downed rocketship (against orders!). Although this might be considered YA military sci-fi, the tech and military elements do not overwhelm the story. Both teen and adult fans of the genre will likely enjoy this book and series.
