Fear Agent : Final Edition Vol. 3 is the third omnibus of the Image comics series created by author Rick Remender (Deadly Class, Black Science), Tony Moore (co-creator of The Walking Dead) and Jerome Opeña.

It includes the fifth story arc, and the final one :
I against I, parts 1 to 6
Out of Step, parts 1 to 5

Review of Vol. 1 : https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Review of Vol. 2 : https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Volume 2 ended on a hell of a cliffhanger. The first story arc of volume 3 picks up right where we left. After the timey wimey ghosts shenanigans, Heath and his Russian partner end up on the other side of the black hole singularity, stranded on a strange and unknown world. But, is that place full of familiar faces even a real world ? Even there, shadowy characters keep conspiring against them. Heath definitely earns his « Cowboy » nickname. We also get revealing flashbacks to his youth and childhood, and some talks about « Black Science » (Google it).

Then, we realize all the time travel made things go awry. Paradoxes abound, hard truths are revealed, and writing more would spoil the ride to the finale.

If Heath still narrates the story, inbetween the obligatory Samuel Clemens quotes, the story isn’t just a non-stop fun and action romp anymore. What began as a throwback to the pulp stories of the fifties slowly morphed into an epic science fiction saga, concluding with a quite fitting ending.

So, how come there is a fourth omnibus ?

Skvely momenty pohrbivaj ty debilni a arogantni debil v hlavni roli tomu taky moc nepomaha. V mejch ocich teda serie zustava v mori sedyho prumeru a tentokrat nam to Remenderem uplne nevyslo.

Holy hell that was a good book. My gosh! Great on so many levels. That asshole author rick remender made me cry again. The story is so wild and crazy that I’m sure it’s gonna get away from the author and then he pulls you right back into the heart of it and puts a bow on it. Really good! 5 stars.

The next 2 volumes here in this edition. I feel like the story has just become overly convoluted. Like too many backtracks or reversals. I guess to some degree thats the point but I've lost my interest in this story

The first half of this book was really weird and was worried how it was going to explain everything in a way that made sense but was a good story. Somehow the second half stuck the landing and absolutely blew me away, this could’ve been the ending to the whole series and I’d be satisfied but very happy there’s more to read!

I have a few little gripes I will get to about Fear Agent, or rather science fiction in general, although dammit if this story didn't go and have one of the nicest old endings I can recall in quite some time. Remender may leave me a little indifferent, a little cold sometimes when it comes to his writing, although the man was cooking with gas when he wrote most of this final arc. Dammit if the final issue wasn't the best one in the series. And I really don't think you can say that about many comic series out there. A fitting farewell to a strong and solid story.
Now, the gripes. The main issue I have with science fiction stories is the science fiction. Now, that's obviously a self fulfilling prophecy if ever I've heard one, although so much of what make science fiction what it is, frustrates the living hell out of me. Or rather, when you use every science fiction trope to give you every easy way out every conceived by man. Time travel as a way to introduce or explain away the impossible. Life saving miracle surgery invented or appearing on a dime, exactly when needed. Plot devices capable of being conjured into existence with but the stroke of a pen. Now I know what you are thinking, it is certainly possible to write good sci fi without using or relying upon these crutches. But let's be honest. How often does it happen. It certainly didn't happen here with Fear Agent. This story was always at its best during its smaller character moments. When the time travel and space ships and aliens and lasers pissed off for a bit, and it was just Remender writing some wonderful characters, and coming up with some pretty damn creative and engaging things for them to say to each other. All the other stuff. All the other sci fi stuff was just fancy filler to get you to the small character moments again. Volume 3 had more of them than the previous arcs, and they were better than the previous arcs. Its not great mystery then why this is my favourite arc of the story. I just wish the plot wasn't unnecessarily confusing, as Remender did his best to gather it all back in in time to wrap it up. It might have been hastily/sloppily assembled in the end. Although dammit if it didn't have one of the prettiest bows on it that I've ever seen. 4.5/5

Given that Remender is one of my favourite writers over the last decade it’s hugely surprising that this series, which is so widely well regarded with fans, didn’t really work for me.

I can just see the sprouts of the writer that Remender becomes in here. It’s tonally very jarring, so when it gets serious and poignant it’s almost difficult to fully absorb the emotions.

Moore and Opena are great artists but here I feel the designs, particularly the various alien species, and the decision to go with a very cartoony style of are, almost undermines the weight of the wider narrative.

Like Black Science, which I think is better than this but also far from his best work (although there are many peaks in that long run), it’s too up and down and can get lost in silly storylines.
Characters also flip flop around too much and whilst that may be true of real life, it’s very hard to fully buy into their story arcs at times as a result.

Can't recommend this one. The first 2 volumes are good enough, but this final volume of the main story is a big miss. Yes, there are some good, emotional parts, but all of that is completely overshadowed by issue #30. Remender takes nearly the full issue to explain everything that was going on that the reader and main protagonist didn't know were happening over 29 issues. So instead of the art of good writing by "showing," Remender just "tells" you (literal data dump of info) why everything happened the way it did. It felt like he had a 50-60 issue story to tell, got to issue 29 and was told or decided to wrap it up in 3 issues.

For anyone who thinks this is Remender's best work, please checkout Black Science - that he did right.

The conclusion to the Fear Agent series. If you're a sci-fi nerd, don't get your hopes up. The book is incredibly loose with science and phsyics, it's frustrating at times. Also some very underwhelming and easy escapes from inescapable conflicts... If you're a comic book nerd, go for it. The world building is awesome, the storyline is pretty good - if you don't get hung up on every little thing- and the art is just fantastic. Tony Moore does a much better job on this book than he ever did on the first 6 issues of Walking Dead. Overall entertaining and a pretty good read.

4,5⭐

Bella bella bella !

The first arc in here is probably my favorite of the series, but as a whole this series never came together for me. We were told, but never actually shown, why we should believe Heath Huston is any sort of decent person, and the story didn't work to earn its payoffs. It also seems to have betrayed its own original goal with its insistence on being taken seriously by the end. Overall, an interesting stepping stone in Remender's career, but definitely one of his weakest.

Wow! What a way to end the story! I love it when the writer keeps making winning seem more and more impossible for the hero. When more and more of his tools and allies are taken away from him. It makes it all it that much sweeter when the hero finally pulls it out in the end.

Heath Huston the last Fear Agent, the last human! What a trade! Continuous into the breach moments. Every jump and every adventure feels like the last yet RR keeps it going with a Rick and Morty “esque” feel that has those old school sci fi vibes.

Glad I finished this series, it was too much, too much of everything, gore, clones, time travel. It got tedious, but it was a nice ending.
