In Warfare: Winning the Spiritual Battle, Dr. Tony Evans tackles the complicated topic of spiritual warfare. Dr. Evans spends substantial time fleshing out the history of spiritual warfare, who is involved in the war, and how to fight the war. He writes so that someone with little or no previous knowledge of spiritual warfare can get a comprehensive view of the subject matter.

In the pages of Warfare, I also found good, practical advice on matters such as: recognizing one's responsibility and power to direct one's thoughts/doubts, reverence for the Lord God, realizing that people/situations are not the real enemy and who the actual enemy is, the necessity of prayer, the danger of elevating things or people above God, and more.

There was one major idea in Warfare that Dr. Evans did not completely convince me about: that all spiritual warfare happens because Satan wants to steal God's glory and God is all about keeping His glory. Dr. Evans explains why he believes this, but I was not convinced. The way it was presented made God seem narcissistic. My personal belief is that spiritual warfare happens because God loves humans and wants a relationship with them while the enemy hates humans and works to prevent that relationship with God. Perhaps I am in the wrong, but I just wasn't convinced in this matter.

It is important to note that Warfare is written from a conservative, evangelical worldview. Those who disagree with said worldview will likely disagree with several things including Dr. Evans' view of the necessity of submission in marriage.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen Chapter 9 go into further detail about the weapons we can use in this war – commonly known as the Armor of God in Ephesians 6. (Dr. Evans' daughter, Priscilla Shirer, has a fabulous in-depth study on this particular topic if you want to explore more with practical application)

Lastly, I noted that the copyright page shows that Warfare is a condensed version of Tony Evans' book, The Battle is the Lord's, and that part of chapter 1 is excerpted from his book, Kingdom Man. So, just a heads-up that if you have read The Battle is the Lord's, the material might be very similar.

We all know life can be difficult at times, a downright battle. We can attribute the struggle to circumstances, relationships, our jobs, or our past. We often forget, or overlook, the real root of the battle.

We have an enemy who seeks to drag us down, discourage us, and keep us in a cycle of defeat.

In his book, Warfare: Winning the Spiritual Battle, Tony Evans seeks to open our eyes to the spiritual battle, reveal our contender, and teach us to live in victory.

“The Word of God teaches that what’s really going on in our lives, families, churches, and the world at large is a battle that sits outside time and space, but that determines what happen in time and space. It’s a spiritual battle. And although we live in a physical world, we live in a war zone. Recognizing this reality is the first step toward victory.” (from page 19)

The book returns to the beginning of the battle, between Lucifer and God, taking us through the Garden of Eden to explain the battle of the ages. It is the battle we each must wage with the proper weapons which God has provided for us.

“The reason so many Christians are losing the battle is that they are trying to beat the devil using the world’s weapons. They’re looking to the secular world to help them with their spiritual need …

Unless you choose a spiritual response, all the time, effort, and resources you spend trying to fix the problem will ultimately be a waste of time, a Band-Aid on the situation.” (from page 65)

This book is a vital read for every Christian. It is filled with Biblical teaching on the subject of spiritual warfare. The author writes in a clear, concise, and easy to understand manner for which I was most appreciative.

We are left with much encouragement and hope in waging this spiritual battle:

“One final thing to remember as you wage successful warfare is that the strength that you need to win the battle with the devil has already been supplied to you by God. This is absolutely vital to remember. You already have all that you need to win this war. Your strength is not accumulated nor is it earned. It is supplied by the grace of God, who equips you to live the life to which you have been called.” (from page 209)

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.“
(Ephesians 6:10, NASB)

Warfare, Winning the Spiritual Battle, by Dr. Tony Evans is an insightful book from the author explaining both the battle that Christians are in and biblical strategies for winning.

The book focuses on Paul’s letter to Ephesians helping Christians to understand that there really is an unseen battle waging in their lives. As our world and the Church is increasingly distracted and attacked by Satan and his rebellious army the Christian needs to be reminded that the victory was won on Calvary, and to daily put on the Armor of God.

Dr. Tony Evans is the senior Pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, and president of The Urban Alternative whose daily radio broadcasts and podcasts stream worldwide. He is listed as one of the “12 Most Effective Preachers in the English-Speaking World” by Baylor University (https://www.baylor.edu/truett/index.p...). He has an earned Doctorate from Dallas Theological Seminary.

Warfare is very readable for both young Christians and meaty enough for Pastors and Theologians with good examples and plenty of biblical support. So, this book is for both the Pastor preparing to preach and the parishioner preparing to stand their ground with assurance of the Master’s Word.

From a Mennonite Brethren perspective it reinforces that our fight is not with flesh and blood but with Principalities, and Powers in the unseen world, (Eph. 6:12) calling us to be heralds and champion causes that lead to peace and justice through Christ’s finished work on the cross.

“In your Christian life, you don’t fight for victory; you fight from victory. You don’t say, “I am going to try to be victorious over Satan today.” Instead, you say, “Jesus Christ has already been victorious over Satan. So today, by faith, I am going to live in Christ’s authority, trusting His blood to give me power over any attacks of the evil one.” (158)

Is the book something new or revolutionary? No, it’s just a fresh perspective on what has been written about, preached on and practiced since Paul put pen to it. But, it was a good read to chew on!

I have been a Pastor and Missionary for 25 years, preached through, and taught on this subject several times. Seems I never get tired of being reminded of the truth!

I chose this book to gain a better understanding of spiritual warfare. I’m not referring to Buffy the Vampire Slayer or the series, Supernatural. I’m talking about actual spiritual warfare that most don’t believe is a thing. I think this is an important read for all of us, to better understand what we are up against. Tony Evans provides thoughtful insight, backed by scripture.

Chapter 3 (The Battlefront) got hold of me. Satan uses all areas in our lives to knock us down and pull us away from God. He doesn’t care what we do, as long as we aren’t serving God. Tony points out not just us as an individual, but areas like within our family, the church (ouch, I’ve had some struggles with this), and society. We need to dig down to reveal the source of the attack: the problem, and not just the symptoms. For me, personally, is the problem with those in my church, or more with me and my attitude.

Tony continues with covering how Satan attacks us? The first stage is through desire, temptations, and addictions. Tony continues to list stage after stage of how Satan works to trip us up. It starts small, eventually snowballing. It’s that the way it is? I mean, it’s easy to see with addictions. It started small but grew to the point that we couldn’t live without (insert addiction). A relative had gone through an alcohol addiction and it made me think: I could never feel more superior than him. Why? Because I have my own addictions. It might not be something as visible as alcohol, but it’s there. I’m far from perfect. So this book, while I recommend it to readers, it really was of great benefit for me.

I appreciate that the author includes our attitudes and emotions, such as anxiety and depression. I refuse to be a slave to my emotions or to have them drag others down around me.

“When you praise, you resist Satan’s opposition.”

I appreciate how much Tony references the Bible so that we, the reader, can research it on our own and not just take his word for it. This book is exactly what I needed to read. If you struggle on a day-to-day basis with life, depressed, anxious or more, I recommend reading through this book (or listening to the audiobook). I received a copy of Warfare from Moody Publishers. This review includes my honest thoughts and review of the book.

Understanding that you are at war, understanding the enemy, and understanding the tools that God has given us, is vital in winning the spiritual battle that we face each and every day. Tony Evans, in his book Warfare: Winning the Spiritual Battle, helps provide the tools that we need to be successful in the fight.

Evans, the founder and senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas Texas, has given us through Moody Publishers a 224 page book for this. This goes well with earlier works that he has published such as Victory in Spiritual Warfare Bible Study Book: Field Guide for Battle published in 2016, Victory in Spiritual Warfare: Outfitting Yourself
for the Battle published in 2011, and Prayers for Victory in Spiritual Warfare published in 2015. The subject of spiritual warfare is one that he is quite familiar with and this shows in his newest work.

This book helps us understand that so many of the problems that we face each day are a result of this war. He discusses the battle that we face individually, in our families, in our church, and in society. He helps us
understand the enemy that we face in Satan as well as his demon force that he uses each day against us. Something that I found surprising was his discussion on the spiritual allies that we have in Angels and in Jesus Christ Himself. To be honest, I have not put a whole lot of thought into that in the past.

Evans ends his book with a helpful discussion of our authority and our weapons that we have have at our disposal so that we can win the battle. He reminds us throughout the book that we are already victorious and that we need to live each day fighting from victory and not just for it.

I found this book to be easy to read and devotional. It is full of Scripture references and would be a helpful tool to be used by anyone that find themselves in a battle. I do recommend that you pick it up.

This is the first book I have read by Tony Evans. To be honest, though I’ve been a Christian for many decades, I generally shy away from reading Christian books. This is because I’ve found the theology in many to be very different from what I understand from my own reading. This is especially true of Christian fiction but that isn’t applicable in this case.

“Warfare” is one of the few books that I’ve come across where I agreed with every word. It’s easy to do as it is all based directly upon the Word without unusual twisting or manipulation to fit what the author is trying to say.

Simply put, Mr. Evans is giving Christians a talking to from lessons straight from God.

We are told, in this book and in the Bible, that our fight is won (by Jesus Christ) but we are still in a battle in the spiritual realm. That that is where we are fighting to hold the line against what our enemy (the devil and other fallen angels) are trying to poach back from God.

The book covers interesting approaches from personal to family to church to community. I especially needed to read the personal segments. There were things in my life that were small but were blocking my ability to approach God. Because of what I read and the conviction of the Holy Spirit, I’ve spent some time seeking forgiveness from others. It’s amazing how such a small thing can open the floodgates of heaven.

The book is excellent and I appreciated reading it. I’ll be looking for other books by this author as he what he has to say comes straight from the Word.

This book starts at the beginning when Spiritual Warfare first started, even before the Garden of Eden. It provides a look at just who the enemy is, the methods of attack, and how we are drawn into spiritual warfare. It gives us insight into how our enemy came to be against us. We need to know our enemy and what our battle is to become equipped and effective in the battle. The writing style is easy to understand and flows well. Tony Evans uses Scripture verses and references throughout the book. Tony writes in a bold and direct manner and doesn't sugar coat or water down his words. Tony tells about hell and that we all have choices to make, even satan, but we will have consequences for our choices. He uses practical examples and illustrations to help you understand a concept. I thought this book would deal more with the Armor of God and would have liked more detail/insight on the Armor of God and the passage in Ephesians 6:10-20. I was expecting information and tools on how to use the Armor of God to fight our spiritual battle. This book covered a broader range of topics in spiritual warfare than just the Armor of God. It was convicting at times but also got me to think deeper on the subject of spiritual warfare. I enjoyed this book a lot and it gave me insight into spiritual warfare that I hadn't heard or studied previously. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I'm not required to write a positive review, and the opinions I have expressed are my own.

Title: Warfare: Winning the Spiritual Battle
Author: Tony Evans
Genre: Christian
Rating: 5 out of 5

So many people have problems they’re fighting: depression, drug use, anger, divorce, financial problems…the list goes on and on. But these are just the symptoms of a much greater problem. The real battle isn’t with these issues, it’s with the devil and his armies.
Tony Evans shows us how to fight these enemies—and win. He shows you how spiritual warfare is impacting your life and those around you, what effect these enemies are having, and the weapons at your disposal. He’ll show you how to become a victor over the enemies in your life. This truly is a war.

Tony Evans uses powerful teaching in an easy-to-understand style as he lays out the battles facing us every day, before he turns to the weapons to use to fight back, and the power that stands behind us. This a wonderful, powerful book for all Christians to read.

Dr. Tony Evans is an evangelical leader, pastor, and speaker. Warfare: Winning the Spiritual Battle is his newest book.

Our spiritual battles are not fought using worldly methods. The enemy, Satan, attacks us by using our relationships, our challenges, and sometimes our past to keep us from fulfilling God's purpose.  We cannot sit back and wait for him to go away.

Tony Evans, in his book "Warfare", teaches us to identify how spiritual warfare affects our soul, family, and culture, who the armies are who fight our battles and how to claim victory.

"Warfare" introduces several ideas that surprised me and gave some very spiritual and wise advice when it comes to fighting our battles.  Evans will make you think and search Scripture and help you learn what it takes to fight the enemy.

Spiritual warfare is not easy, and we will constantly be battling the enemy. We need a guide to help us and encourage us to keep going and never give up. Evans leads us to the One who empowers us to fight and win.

Whether we like it or not, we are in a war against an enemy. Dr. Tony Evans equips us for battle in his new book Warfare. He tells us who the enemy is and takes us through the history of the enemy, and the enemy’s works and strategies. He then goes on to show us how God has equipped us to fight this battle. He tells us that God hasn’t left us alone but is right there with us. God gives us armor and weapons to fight the enemy, and best of all, we are guaranteed success. Evans doesn’t just summarize this battle but goes into details about exactly how the enemy works, and exactly how God works in our lives to fight the enemy. Every Christian should read this book at least once. This book can help us to formulate our battle plan against satan and his demons, as we fight alongside the Lord of Heaven’s armies and reach our victory. Tony Evans is a husband, father, and well respected pastor, teacher, and speaker. He also has a daily podcast and a website where you can find numerous resources to help with your relationship with God. I was blessed to be on the launch team and to preview this book.

The book Warfare by Tony Evans is excellent. This book should be read by every Christian at least once. Tony teaches the Christian who Satan is, how He can hurt our lives, what strategies we need to have, how to proceed to use the strategies. The book is very positive and well written. The author has a personal style which feels like He is talking right to the reader and guiding them. He teaches the reader to remember God is working constantly in your life. He knows what is best for you . He is fighting for you even when things are dark. He wants the Christian to put on the armour and move forward each day. He goes through each part of the armor and reminds us to put it on. He tells us our sword is the word ( Bible) and we must be praying constantly. He also tells is to watch since satan will put up fortresses if we do not forgive, not tell the truth and follow God's principles. This book is very highly recommended !

First, I have to say that I’m a fan of Tony Evans. That being said, I had never read one of his books and I certainly have been missing out! Tony clearly defines spiritual warfare, but before he delves into how to combat it, he discusses Genesis and the fall. It makes sense that one would really need to understand what happened with Adam & Eve, Lucifer and the angels that left heaven and what that means for us today. He takes the reader through the scripture to back up his explanations and illustrates what is occurring now.

I have always been curious to learn more about spiritual warfare and though Mr. Evans explanations are written simply, the depth of his message is powerful. I learned so much about spiritual warfare; I will be purchasing a copy of this book as soon as it is released and I can already imagine how much I will highlight and write between the margins.

My review can’t fully describe how incredible this book is and how much I highly recommend it.

I received an early copy of this book from Netgalley and all of the opinions are my own.

I REALLY enjoyed this book. Tony Evans is personally one of my favorite pastors to learn from because he is very down-to-earth and speaks simply. He does not sugar-coat the reality of biblical teachings. His method for teaching scripture is very clear and he rightly divides the Word. (2 Tim 2:15) When I saw that I had the chance to review this book, I jumped on it!

This book was an easy read. It's definitely something you could pick up, but be aware - you might not be able to put it down. In this book, Dr. Evans thoroughly explains the importance of understanding the importance of understanding what it means to be a citizen of the Heavenly Kingdom, and how that connects with how we live day-to-day life.

This is something that every Christian will encounter in their faith journey. In this book, Dr. Evans really explains in depth how to identify spiritual warfare and how to claim victory over these battles.  I think this book is a must-read for every believer!

In this book, Tony Evans uses scripture to clearly teach about all aspects of spiritual warfare. Even though I’ve heard teaching on this topic many times through the years, there were things mentioned in this book that I’d never heard taught in exactly this way. I was especially intrigued by the section on angels. It was refreshing to read descriptions of these beings based solely on scripture and not wishful thinking or fantasy.

This book is readable and held my interest all the way through the last chapter. I was convicted about being more consistent in prayer, and encouraged by again realizing the power and protection we have only through Christ. This is a book to read in all seasons of our lives.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

What a timely message! Dr. Tony Evans uses a straight forward approach to clearly communicate how to live in our world where the devil continually attacks. Warfare is filled with solid Biblical teaching about victory in spiritual warfare. I was encouraged as I read about God’s role and His control over my trials, hardships, disappointments and also moments of joy. Warfare gave me insight, as well as, a new perspective on facing my trials. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is feeling attacked or defeated. Warfare could be shared with anyone facing difficulties and is perfect for a book discussion/study group. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions are my own.

We are fighting a supernatural battle that we can’t win without the help of the Holy Spirit. Dr. Tony Evans writes about the everyday problems that we are facing – depression, divorce, finances, to list a few – and offers Biblical perspectives on gaining victories over these attacks. Using Scripture, Dr. Evans describes the battles we face and gives suggestions on the weapons to use to fight back. Written in easy to understand language, WARFARE is a powerful book for Christians to read and gain new insights into those who are feeling attacked and defeated, but more importantly, to understand that God has already won the victory.

I have never read a book by Tony Evans, but have heard him teach many times. Warfare was a great reminder of our authority we have in Christ Jesus, and how to apply it to every area of our lives. He quotes in the beginning of the book "Yet only as we are willing to follow Him by laying down our own logic, perspective, approach and understanding of how to fight this war will we discover the fullness and effects of that victory in every area of our lives". He also states here, "The battle is for glory" "Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Cor. 10:31; and Col. 3:23 This book will help every believer take their rightful authority and see the victory Jesus died for while we live on earth.

This is a topic many avoid talking about. It can be uncomfortable and awkward. But it is so necessary because spiritual warfare impacts us every day and every where. It permeates all we see and all whom we interact with. Tony Evans does a powerful job of breaking the spiritual warfare we face down into who the enemies are, who our allies are, and how to live in victory. Christians too often live just a semblance of the freedom and fullness Christ offers. It is often because they are failing in spiritual warfare and are living as spiritual POWs instead of free men and women through the power and authority of Jesus Christ. You will not regret purchasing this book. But, you must be ready to engage the battle and stop sitting by.

I have been a fan of Dr. Evans for many years. I have listened to his sermons on the Urban Alternative, taken courses through his Training Center, and read numerous books and Bible studies. Warfare is the best book that Dr. Evans has written. Dr. Evans goes into great detail explaining how everything we do in the physical realm is influenced by the spiritual. He also states: "we have lost sight of the fact that we are in a perpetual state of warfare, which demands constant alertness. And so we let down our guards. We open ourselves up to attack. We forget that we are warriors, not tourists, in God's Kingdom on earth." Dr. Evans teaches us how to become warriors. How to recognize and protect ourselves against the schemes of the devil. This book will change you. You will begin to view everything through the eyes of a warrior.

Another great teaching by Tony Evans that I highly recommend. He shows us how are are in a constant battle against the enemy and how to effectively handle these situations. He shows how great Lucifer had it in heaven but pride brought him down and he wants all of us too. Dr. Evans shows us we can live a victorious life when we follow Gods plan. He challenges us with scripture to look at our trials with a new perspective and how worshipping God makes a difference. You will gain much insight about warfare and how to deal with it from this book!

This is such an encouraging book on spiritual warfare. Dr. Evans does an excellent job of reminding the reader/believer who they are, who God is, what satan's limitations are, and how we can change the trajectory of spiritual attacks by acting in accordance with these Truths. It is clear and concise. It is easy to read and compelling. It is full of Scriptural support for all of his points which better enables the believer to successfully engage in battle. This book came at such a timely moment in my life and truly encouraged me in the midst of a crisis. It's a must read!

Read this with my church small group. The discussions we had while reading this book made it enjoyable but I don’t think I’d recommend it to others. There were several portions of the book where Evan’s repeated himself again and again, leaving me more annoyed than enlightened. I did like that there was a heavy emphasis on the power of prayer and a few nuggets of wisdom but overall just felt lukewarm about this one.

This book by Tony Evans is an awesome book. He gets down to the point and how the deceiver comes at us at so many directions. He uses our families, work, even our churches to bring us down but he tells us the victory has already been won by Jesus Christ we just have to learn how to use the weapons to out on top. I give this book 5 stars.

A basic on spiritual warfare. i bought this book because I wanted to know more about the topic for a research project I was working on at the time. There were a few things I disagree with. Contrary ti Evans belief, I believe one can lose his or her salvation, which is why we must watch and protect it. Overwise, we ener the license to sin realm and that's bad...

I have read numerous books by Dr. Tony Evans because he is a sound Bible teacher and author. His latest book does not disappoint. Dr. Evans does an excellent job in interpreting the crucial scriptures that clearly demonstrate that "we wrestle not against flesh and blood." He begins by focusing on the truth of the conception of the spiritual conflict. Dr. Evans delves into the person of Satan and the fallen angels. He delineates how Satan tries to thwart God's plans, and how we, as believers, need to be cognizant of Satan's schemes and tactics. Dr. Evans provides principles and practices that will help believers overcome Satan's schemes and devious deceptions.

Dr. Evans interprets each part of God's armor as pictured by the Apostle Paul, in Ephesians 6, and reminds us that putting on the armor is really another way of saying that we "put on Christ." With his signature humor, clear anecdotes, and applications we learn how to stand against our enemy.
