Ten Serizawa has a two-hour commute through the mountains to high school every day, so she can’t spend much time hanging out with her friends in the afternoon. She decides to move into the local boardinghouse, where one of her friends and three other boys are living. Ten’s friends consider her to be as oblivious as a rock when it comes to noticing boys and falling in love, but will she be able to keep her calm and steady

EDIT: (reread Jan 14, 2019) EXCUSE ME THIS WAS SO MUCH CUTER THAN I REMEMBER??? WAS I JUST FEELING MOODY THAT FIRST TIME I READ THIS? 😅 Listen to this Nat now, this is hella cute. Stereotypical or not it is definitely worth picking up. Now let's bump that rating up!

If you're a fan of the Dreamin' Sun manga, then you'll probably enjoy this one because of its similarities. But this manga, while cute, is quite stereotypical with its characters and does not stand out among other contemporary romanc

A pretty generic love triangle is at the center of this romance manga that mostly doesn't seem to be trying very hard. Ten is an oblivious but frank girl who decides to live in a boarding house close to her high school rather than commute several hours each day. The other two points in the triangle are a flirt with an uncharacteristic sudden crush and a bookworm seemingly detached from emotion. The drawings of the two males would be indistinguishable to me if one didn't have dark hair and the ot ...more

I had a hard time with Shortcake Cake simply because I have rarely seen more wooden characters. Our protagonist is like a clueless mannequin walking among people but never really giving any semblance of being an actual living person. This reverse harem features several really bland and uninteresting boys who, of course, fall immediately for our brick of a main lead. I was beginning to wonder if there would be a hook that

story is unremarkable but I love many aspects of the art and would read the series solely for it.
By now I feel like I understand the progression of shoujo manga. Most follow somewhat the same pattern. Yet, I'm not going to lie, I was totally thrown for a loop at the end of this volume.

Let me go back and say I love this art style which is just so clean and cute. And the characters are slowly starting to take shape, but unfortunately, this means Ten and the two main male characters while her friend and the other female boarder are slowly being forgotten. I really hope we get more friendship

This was an okay start to a series. I am not sure whether I'm going to continue the series or not, but not because it is bad. The characters are fun (especially Chiaki, a man after my own heart) and the art is good. The story is nothing special but it wasn't bad. I feel bad for being so vague, but there's just nothing really to talk about. If you've read one reverse harem/ romance manga, you've probably read this one. If you want a fun, light read, I would recommend trying the first volume. Not ...more

I read this with a big grin the entire time. It's an incredibly familiar plot, but features a self-confident and straight forward female lead. This is my favourite type of character. I hate when shoujo manga builds its plot on willful misunderstandings... I have very high hopes for this one!

Love love love! This is such a cute story and I'm excited to keep reading it! The guys are such bishies. I'm rooting for Riku. Chiaki is nice as well, though, so I don't really care. I just like Ten. She's a refreshing heroine and her hair is great.

I own this volume and have preordered #2!

I love this trope and Ten is a great lead and the atmosphere of the mountain village 👌🏻🖤🖤

Goodness. I understand them all. I usually give up on seemingly-cliche characteristics and plot, but I love this infinitely more than Dreamin’ Sun. I think Shortcake Cake is an underrated gem.

Chiaki is me. I am Chiaki. Books >>>> Teenage Hormones. Plain and simple. Most people will read this story and think Chiaki is that silly tropey ignorant boy who chooses to ignore his girl fan club. I see him and understand him. He brings a book with him eve

Shortcake Cake is a cute, fun first title in a shoujo manga series. A young girl named Ten decides to move into a boarding house instead of making the two hour commute every day to and from school. Of course, the boarding house is home to a cast of eccentric characters, including two of the cutest guys in school. I'll admit, I felt a particular affinity for Chiaki who happens to have stellar looks and a love of literature.

My only fear is that the "this girl is different, therefore attractive" t
A contemporary romance about a girl who starts living in a student sharehouse and the romance that arises. Ten seems pretty much chill, and uninterested in dating like her friends - until she meets one of her housemates - the quiet Chiaki who loves to read books. But there is another guy, Riku (she is kind of wary because he is too cheerful and flirty), who also starts to fall in love with her. For a first volume, it doesn't develop much - just her arriving at the house, meeting the other housem ...more

Really like the artstyle. The character designs are nice too~ I like how Ten is a more calm and straight-forward heroine. She's not as over-reactive and over-emotional as a lot of other heroines can be. I thought her interactions with Chiaki and Riku were both really cute, and it shows different sides to her personality too, in a way. [Potential spoilers] For instance, she was almost immediately distrustful towards Riku, which makes sense to use readers soon enough, as it's revealed that

This was a little disappointing as I had very high hopes for this manga! It sounded very cute and I was so excited to read it!

Though I did think it was cute, and I liked the boardinghouse setting, the plot and execution felt a little rushed. It seemed to be all over the place and at times I was confused as to who was speaking and what was happening!

The main protagonist, Ten, seemed to be a little bland, as well as the other characters. It was hard to work out who was speaking and the two main lo
This is... cute. It's cute in the same way that Honey So Sweet is, but not so tooth achingly sweet. It didn't waste any time getting right to the romance aspect, but it's taking things slow otherwise. It's more of a "like" story where characters are trying to figure out their feelings for each other.

I still feel like I don't know any of the characters, even the main character, which is a bit disappointing, but this is such a laid back manga other than the crush aspect that I think I'll get to kn

This manga was alright, but it definitely lacked a certain something for me. The beginning was pretty interesting, especially when I thought that there was some mysterious reason that Ten took the bus for 2 hours instead of commuting, but I was disappointed with how the story continued.

While I generally really love romance mangas, this one just felt quite cliche to me, and the manga sadly didn't bring much depth to the characters. It mainly revolved around the "does she like me?"/"does she not l

This manga is about a girl who moves to a boarding house because her family's house is too far from her school. The boarding house is co-ed and a love triangle forms very quickly between the main female character and two other guys that live in the boarding house. Although this plot is one that is seen very often, I was surprised at how quickly the main character found out that one of the guys has a crush on her. It made things awkward between the tenants, but also made the reader want to know w ...more
I liked this book alright. It wasn't particularly amazing or anything. The cover is nice. The art was fine. The guys are cute. There's already a love triangle forming. At twelve volumes total, I'm not sure I'll continue this series. I don't have that much patience for romance without some other kind of tension. Plus, I can't say I'm super attached to any of the characters. Not even the main character. She seems pretty unremarkable, and I don't know how interested I am in reading about her. I do ...more

An uneventful book. The main boy, Chiaki, who I guess we're supposed to like, is just odd. He doesn't talk much, and when he does speak, he's reciting some quote. To me, this does not make him attractive, it makes him a block of soap. Criteria for Unermensch (got that from Darius the Great is Not Okay) and how Chiaki scores:
Height: Excellent
Face: Alright
Sense of humor: Terrible
Personality: A block of soap
Would not recommend.

P.s. I'll definitely be reading more mangas in the future.

Before I started blogging heavily several years ago now, I read a lot of manga, and I kind of miss it. I requested Shortcake Cake, Volume 1 from Edelweiss because it sounded like just my sort of shoujo, and so far so good.

Ten goes to school far from home, and she decides to stay in a coed boarding house with her friend rather than riding the bus hours every day. She's got two potential love interests in the house, and so far both have potential. I have a history of loving boarding house manga, s

I’ve had this on my tbr for the longest time & I’m so glad I finally got to pick this manga up. The story was adorable, funny, & kept me engaged from start to finish. Also the characters were relatable & you can tell that their individual arcs will explore some interesting places. Lastly the volume ends with a cliff hanger that could lead to drama and/or super hilarious moments. I can’t wait to read vol 2!

Cute, fluffy new shojo series about a young high school girl who moves into a coed boarding school. The first book introduces you to the major characters and the potential love interests. I’m anticipating this to be a RH, but it might end up as just a triangle. Not much happens in the first book, but I’m curious enough to pick up the next volume.

It’s okay. There is not much to it. The story is progressing fast, but I don’t really see a solid plot line. I read it but not with much enthusiasm. I know it’s a slice of life series but it isn’t really showcasing anything spectacular. I may pick up volume two. Here’s hoping something pops off.

Where is the Sailor Moon, DBZ and FMA of my generation?

I gave it a 5 star rating because the story line is something a pre-teen/teen would enjoy and it can easily be read in one day. I found it difficult to read, purely based on the fact that I haven't ever read Manga.

This was cute! There's just enough variation on normal shoujo themes to keep it interesting. My one real complaint is that I wish a bit more time had been spent on Ten's long commute, instead of her deciding to move into a boarding house at the end of the first chapter.
