"I'm a non-fiction author and project editor (plus I do a bit of journalism). I'm available for project development, writing, project management and I also work as a packager. Click on the links above to see examples of my work.

But first some background: Over the last 20 years, I've written books, magazine and newspaper articles, for online and for television. I get to write about a wide range of subjects, everything from axolotls to zoroastrianism. However, my specialties are natural history, technology and all things scientific. I've worked on projects with Brian May, Patrick Moore, Marcus de Sautoy and Carol Vorderman and for major international publishers, such as Dorling Kindersley, National Geographic, Scholastic, Hachette, Facts on File and BBC Magazines.

I spend my days finding fun ways of communicating all kinds of facts, new and old, to every age group and reading ability. I live in Bristol, England, with my wife and three children. I studied zoology at Bristol University and have had spells working at the zoos in Jersey and Surrey. I used to be something of a conservationist, which included planting trees in Somerset, surveying Vietnamese jungle and rescuing buffaloes from drought-ridden Zimbabwe. Writing jobs have also taken me to the Galápagos Islands, the Amazon rainforest, the coral reefs of Indonesia and the Sahara Desert. Nowadays, I can be found mainly in the attic."

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book and even learned a few things. Lots has been discovered since I read a book like this! Unfortunately, my enjoyment of it has certainly been compromised having read an eARC, which most certainly doesn’t do it justice. Looking at it on my small iPad on Adobe Editions just isn’t the same as a big paper book. I’m sure it will be beautiful!

The illustrations are gorgeous and chock full of additional information to really bring home the point. They are spread over two pages, which also wasn’t possible to appreciate fully in the eARC.

4.5 stars, only because I wanted more and it just gave me enough to whet my appetite!
This is a fantastic introduction to space, with beautiful illustrations and lots of interesting facts and questions e.g. what causes the polar aurora and whether or not it is likely that our sun could become a black hole and swallow the Earth (spoiler, the answer is no for any anxious readers!).
It explains very complex concepts in a clear, easy-to-understand way that is sure to spark an interest in learning more about astronomy. A must-have for any primary classroom!
Full review, complete with pictures, to come on my blog.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy for an honest review.

I liked learning about space, I’ve always been interested in space. It covers a decent amount of information and I liked how it had photos to show what things look like. This is definitely a good starter book to get into space I hope the author continues to make more space books. I gave this a four out of five stars.

A Fine Early Introduction

I was impressed by this basic introduction for young readers. It isn't jokey or cutesy, but it does have a cheerful welcoming feel. (It's not as cartoony as the cover makes it appear.)

Because it's a survey it covers a lot of ground. As a consequence, everything gets touched on lightly and quickly. We start with some basic cosmology, (planets, solar system, galaxy, etc.), and then go back and start working our way out from the sun. After a visit to each planet the story moves on to nearby stars, local neighborhood galaxies, nebulas, and more exotic features like black holes, quasars, and the like.

I was surprised by how much info was packed into each brief bit, and how thorough the book was in terms of touching on all of the big ticket topics. For all of this there is a nice combination of styles. For example, a planet will get a two-page spread, with an exploded or surface view. Around the margins are side panels with factoids about probes and other investigations. There is a mix of text, drawings, photos, maps, and graphs. Scattered about are historical tidbits, Hubble style pictures, and other high interest factoids.

The upshot is that you get a reasonably coherent and well-organized tour that serves as a nice introduction. There is a lot here to read about and to look at; it's all current and really does provide a decent survey of what's going on in modern astronomy. It seemed to me that, for a starter sort of book, this struck a good balance between basic and advanced, and seemed like a volume that could have wide appeal to a range of younger readers.

(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Space Atlas: A Journey From Earth to the Stars, and Beyond is an illustrated, non-fiction book about the universe for children ages 7-9 years.

Space Atlas is a fun and comprehensive view of space that explains all of the key important aspects from home on Earth to the edge of the universe! In this book, we explore planets, constellations, and space stations!

The illustrations are incredible and colorful, and is, admittedly, one of the reasons why I picked up this book, save my great love of space. Jackson and Djordjevic take us on a comprehensive journey that is full of great info but isn't overwhelming like many space-related books can be.

This book could be a spacefarer's general guide to what's immediately out there, almost like a guided tour of the planets, with illustrations that tell you key info about each planet, fun facts, and gorgeous illustrations. The illustrations are really key, because they help explain concepts that might be more difficult to understand, by comparing them with things we are familiar with on earth.

Beyond just the things we usually hear about—planets, constellations, and space stations!—we also get to explore nebulas, black holes, and the instruments used to investigate them. While there is little in the way of plot or narration, I think the way the book is presented is perfect and lovely and an interesting adventure that will rocket the imagination of children into space!

We've been looking at a few space books recently, borrowed from the library, looking for an addition to purchase for our homeschool shelves. At first, I wasn't sure how much this would appeal to Miss 6 given that it's themed on illustrations rather than photos. This turned out to be the space reference book that we've both liked best so far. She likes the inclusion of constellations (excited to spot 'the teapot') and we both really liked the scale drawings that do a great job of showing how the planets compare in size to Earth.

Miss 6 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

This is a very solid look at outer space. The information is interesting, the layout is clear, and photography is well integrated. I think what this book does really well is look further than most previous space atlases. It gives good overviews of the planets in our solar system, along with the sun and moon, but then it pushes further to nebulae and systems that scientists have discovered more recently. For a kid who wants to know more, explore further, this book will take you there.

Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.

Not much can really be said about this book. It's an atlas, about space. It is what it is. But, it's super cute. It's perfect for the young, or the young at heart, that want to know more about space. It gives information about all the planets, some of the dwarf planets and things in space from asteroids to satellites. Even a amateur astronomer may learn something here if they aren't versed in every single thing in space.

Super cute illustrations and great information. This was an adorable book and I highly recommend it for anyone that knows a space lover.

My 2 cents:
... I am really into Space, well I´m a geek all my life and since I was a Kid I ADORE Star Trek - still a huge fan of it and I have my own Spaceship Enterprise in my Living room =)

.. the book looks nice and colorful. it is easy to understand and to read. The facts and Information are very interesting and informative for someone who doesn´t have a clue what´s going on in our Galaxy or in our own Solar System.... and it´s not only for kids, for grown-ups and adults as well!

Note 1 or A
