"The plot is complex and extensive, but the quality of the writing is what makes this novel truly special. John William follows in the proud tradition of J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, Terry Goodkind, and Robert Jordan. Each sentence on every page has been carefully crafted with a distinct purpose. The read is a fast-moving pleasure, because the language is clean, powerful and, at times, even profound. If you are a reader seeking an easy escape, this is a good choice, but for discerning fan ...more

“It was a thing coarse when set against her perfect curls, her head of dark hair so soft and full and lustrous that it was the very picture of youthful beauty. Yet the hand stroking it gently just now—large but no longer meaty, with liver spots and raised veins leading up to its gaudily ringed fingers—summoned a different image indeed. This was the quivering claw of a corpse not quite deceased, feebly scraping at the black soil raining down upon its body. This was a rake that could never quite collect all the leaves.” 0 likes
“Darkness has been and shall ever be. Long after the substances that fuel heat and light have burned away—giving out at the end of a brief, fragile course—an everlasting night shall reign. Imlod Nir considered this as he watched the last tendrils of smoke from the evening's fire stream lazily into the night air. They mingled with black leaves under a low, moonlit canopy before melding into the consuming void.” -1 likes
