About the author

Lara has loved books since the days of being read bedtime stories by her Irish dad and French mum. At school she set up a secondhand bookshop called Books Change Lives, and went on to study English and Italian at Oxford University. After teaching in Italy and Myanmar, she got her dream job as a writer for Usborne Publishing. From explaining how economics works, to inventing boredom-busting activities, to telling a good dragon yarn, she's enjoyed every minute of the job.

This is the second book of this children’s series I’ve read recently and I’m impressed with the clarity of explanations, the illustrations and the scope that has been covered.

I come from a long line of salaried public servants; none of us has an entrepreneurial bone in our bodies. I know puff about running a business and I freely admit that I’ve learned a thing or two from this book aimed at eight to twelve-year olds.

Our education system (at least in the UK) seems to place heavy emphasis on preparing youngsters for employment with little or no preparation offered for the prospect of owning and running a business. It seems this knowledge is only gleaned by those who come from a business background or who actively set about learning the ropes when they leave school or university. This seems a missed opportunity.

I think this is a splendid series of books. It may go over the heads of my young people but kids always understand more than adults give them credit for.

Як людина, яка двічі (бо в різних університетах) слухала базові курси з економіки і водночас була переконана, що бізнес — це надто складно і незрозуміло, від цієї книжки я чекала суголосного своїм переконанням ефекту, та водночас сподівалася знайти тут якісь інсайти. Окей, зізнаюся, — я їх таки знайшла. Штука в тому, що у школі чи в університеті про всі ці речі говорять, користуючись складними термінами й громіздкими визначеннями. А якщо поговорити про те, як знайти свою нішу на ринку, на прикладі модних сонцезахисних окулярів, одразу все стає якось простіше та зрозуміліше.

«Бізнес для початківців», попри свій невеликий обсяг, охоплює широченне коло тем. Від базових понять про те, що таке підприємства і навіщо вони потрібні, до глобальної картинки того, як функціонують великі корпорації і фінансові біржі. Будете сміятися, та саме завдяки цій книжці я нарешті зрозуміла, в чому прикол з ринками акцій і як люди примудряються на них заробляти гроші!

З цієї книжки можна взяти чимало універсальних, але дієвих порад, усіх цих tips & tricks (в межах закону, звісно), яких тут-таки можна і застосувати на своєму бізнесі (чи навіть на ідеї свого проєкту, змоделювавши і протестувавши різні варіанти). Особливо їх багато у розділах, які стосуються реклами та роботи з людьми.

З точки зору не лише читачки (сказати б, «бізневумен-початківиці»), але й мами, зауважу: дуже цінно і важливо те, що тут доступно і детально проговорюються і такі потрібні й, на жаль, далекі (не лише від тінейджерів, а й від багатьох дорослих земляків) теми, як податки й чому їх потрібно платити (ні, не лише через можливий штраф!); тісний вплив бізнесу на життя громади; соціальна та екологічна відповідальність; те, що бізнес невіддільний від середовища, в якому він діє, тому важливо зберігати із цим середовищем здорові й етичні зв’язки. Так, бізнес — це не лише гроші, а й цінності. Про це нам, дітям 90-х, не говорили. Але, на щастя, діти 2010-х ростимуть уже з усвідомленням оцих речей.

I absolutely loved this book. The information I received during this read was eye opening and all together fantastic. I feel although this book is available to many age groups - some topics more appropriate for teenagers/maturer children, and vise versa. Including areas such as stock market, bitcoin, start up business and even the Cambridge analytic. I brought the hard back version from Waterstones for £10.99. I probably could have got this cheaper but the quality was exceptional.

In conclusion, this book is amazing. 10/10. Would recommend.

Perhaps target audience should be much younger them me, I still enjoy this book very much.
Very straightforward message on every page and visualization with lot of images works great.
Now I just need to play my daughters to read it too ;-)

This was a Very easy quick read but I learned a lot from it on how a business is run and different things that effect businesses.
