It's always a delight to read kids' stories when you're down.

My daughter picked this book out at the library and brought it home. I was really disappointed in this book. The main character, Gus, gets a pet snake which he uses pull a prank on a kid who he later bullies. I wouldn't go as far as to say that this book will teach my daughter that that kind of behavior is right, but I don't think any book that condones that type of behavior is appropriate. If I were more of an activist I would ask the library to remove this book from their shelves. For now it's a good chance to teach my daughter that this behavior is wrong and that not all books are worth our time.

My boys are 4 & 8. This book seemed like it was too "babyish" for my 8-year-old and too "mature" for my 4-year-old. Neither of them liked it.
It's an "Orange Level" reader which presents a wide range of ideas and concepts using challenging vocabulary and complex language structures.
