I ordered this on-line, along with some others that are the same, without knowing these are part of the First Readers Level 1 books. These are meant for a child to practice reading alone on and therefore really don't work for being read aloud to a child. The text is minimal and can be read in about 20 seconds by an adult. It is great if you have a child too young to really begin to read on their own but learning the alphabet and you want to help them along. Julia learned how to identify some of the smaller words like "the" and "I" and "am" on books like these. The end of all of the First Readers we've gotten so far have some nifty things in the back too. This has a Word List and also a capitolization "test". There is a small hidden letter game on one page and a few other neat features that children will like that adds to the book as a whole. I like very much that the back cover includes a list (not entire lists) of which titles are in which level. This ensures you're ordering the right book for your child at the right time.
It tells me a lot about the zoo animals. It tells me a lot about their sounds. I like all the pictures and like that it tells me that the elephant takes baths. But, in real life, their parents give their babies baths. It was really short.
This is a great book for beginner readers. The storyline is enjoyable for the child and for the parent listening to the story. It also has story activities in the back to enhance the reader's skills. I highly recommend this book to beginner readers and their parents.
