Alienating and raw
This early photobook (1988) of Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf is inspired by chess. And S&M. Plus an incidental dead bird.
Every “piece” as photographed by Erwin Olaf amazes, is fresh and slightly, mildly or very unsettling; you have no idea what you will look at when you turn the page. His slick, timeless style, as present in the current Dutch royal portrets, is not yet at the surface in this series. The pictures are clearly inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe.
Favourite photograph is on page 34/35, a rather intense white pawn.

Een fotoboek vol met intrigerende foto’s die geïnspireerd zijn op een schaakspel. De foto’s beelden agressie, kracht, woede en tederheid uit (niet geschikt voor jonge kinderen). Ik heb dit boek een aantal keer bekeken en de originele afbeeldingen gezien tijdens een tentoonstelling. De eerste keer voelt het ongemakkelijk als je deze serie foto’s bekijkt maar al snel ga je de foto’s waarderen en zie je goed hoe esthetisch het werk van Erwin Olaf is.
