2 books5 followersBandi Narayanswamy is a Telugu writer, novelist and a teacher. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2019 for his novel Saptabhoomi. He published the novel in 2017 and got the Telugu Association of North America Award for the same.
He was born on 3 June 1952 in Anantapur to an agricultural family. He studied at the PG Center in Sri Venkateswara University.
After completing his education, he worked as a teacher for various government primary and high schools in remote villages.
His other novels are Rendu Kalala Desam, Meerajyam Meerelandi and Gaddalaadatandayi.

The Telugu review of this book follows the English.
The Modernist, Marxist poet Sri Sri wrote in his poem titled 'Desha-Charitralu'/'Histories of Nations': What makes one proud/ In any country’s history ?/ The story of mankind/ Is nothing but of slavery. And this, the novel asserts with little hesitation. Set in the arid villages of Rayalaseema, it charts the bloodied hierarchy of the social order. It recollects not the histories of kings, poets, and priests but of common folk. Hunters, shepherds, potters, and prostitutes. Sri Sri in the same poem cries: "In the Civilisation of the Nile, ask 'how lived the common man?' In the building of the Taj Mahal, who carried the blocks of stones?" And Narayanaswamy does exactly that. He depicts the triangular love story between three Kurubas, the shepherd caste in the Deccan, portrays the predatory monarchical pangs of lust that befalls a courtesan, Padmasani. The novel conjures the terrible fight between a Mangali (a barber) and an invasive army of a neighbour estate. The author who is unequivocal in his alignment with the poor and oppressed, bats not an eye lid in describing the dirty: erotica, blood, and ignorance. What explodes the reader is the novelist's inventiveness; he is Gramsci's Organic Intellectual - full of original metaphors and imagery. Who ever thought of choosing the scent of onion/garlic (using the Rayalaseema words erragadda/tellagadda for them) to be the canvas on which to set the love story in Anantapur? And Rayalaseema, there alone he earns all our heart. A subaltern region in the world of regions! But remember the Rayas who are anyways gone by now are irrelevant. Irrelevant are also the Nizam, Hyder Ali, or the Peshwas; and that is so deeply impressive! The historical accuracy. It is a world of palegars and an entire universe of thirsty workers and toilers below them. On the count of historical veracity - the novel reminds us of bare truths that have been so maligned that one needs to bother to state them. For example, "The duty of a soldier is of course to defend one's country but another task at hand for him is the razing of the other's land" or this: "Human society has defined the woman's aberration having set the male body as the standard." This book obviously is a great addition to the progressive's bookshelf.

'ఎర్రగడ్డ'/'తెల్లగడ్డ'ల వాసన తో ఇది వరకు ప్రేమకథలు చెప్పబడ్డాయా? రాయలసీమను నేపథ్యంగా మలవడమే ఒక గొప్ప విషయం; కనీ రాయలు లేరు. రాయలే కాదు అప్పట్లో పరిపాలించిన నిజామ్లు, పేష్వాలు, హైదర్ అలి కూడా సూక్ష్మమైన పాత్రలే పోషిస్తారు. ఇది పాలెగాళ్ళ ప్రపంచం. పాలేగాళ్ళ కింద అనిచివేయబడుతున్న ప్రజల ప్రపంచం. మనం తరచూ చరిత్ర పట్ల ఇంత కచ్చితమైన దృష్టి చూడము. మరొక విషయం: కొన్ని స్పష్టమైన సత్యాలను అతి సరళంగా రచయితా ఈ నవలలోకి తీసుకొచ్చాడు. అవి మనకు తెలియవని కాదు. మనం గుర్తించడానికి సిద్ధంగా లేమని. ఇది కేంద్ర సాహిత్య అకాడమి అవార్డు పొందిన నవల. పద్దెనిమిదవ శతాబ్దంలో రాయలసీమ చారిత్రక నేపథ్యం లో చిత్రీకరింపబడిన నవల. హండే రాజు సిద్ధరామప్పనాయుడి పరిపాలనా కాలం లో అనంతపురం సంస్థానంలో ఈ కథనాన్ని రూపొందించారు. ఇందులో సిద్ధరామప్పనాయుడు లాంటి కొన్ని పాత్రలు చరిత్రలో దాఖలైన పాత్రలైన, చాలామాటుకు ముఖ్యమైన పాత్రలన్నీ కాల్పనిక పాత్రలే. చారిత్రక సంఘటనలు, దాఖలాలు ఆధారంగా ఈ పాత్రలు కల్పింపబడినాయి.
అప్పటి రాయలసీమ ఆర్థిక, సామాజిక, రాజకీయ, సాంస్కృతిక వ్యవస్థ, ఆచారాలన్నీ ఈ నవల లో పాత్రలుగా, సంఝటనలుగా, వర్ణనలుగా కనిపిస్తాయి. ఇందులో హింస లైంగిక దౌర్జన్యాలు, చిన్న పిల్లని చితి లో వెయ్యడం వంటి చాలా భీకరమైన సన్నివేశాలతో పాటు ఉదార స్వభావం ఇంకా వీరత్వం కూడా చాలా కనబడుతుంది. ముఖ్యంగా పద్మసాని అనే వేశ్య, వీరశైవ సంప్రదాయంలో ఉన్న నిడుమామిడి స్వామి, అద్వైతం బోధించే తిక్కస్వామి పాత్రలు నాకు చాలా బాగా నచ్చాయి.
ఈ నవల బిల్లే ఎల్లప్ప అనే పాత్ర తో మోదలవుతంది ఇంకా అంతిమ ఘట్టం కూడా ఆ పాత్రదే. కానీ ఇందులో ఒక ప్రధానమైన పాత్ర అంటూ ఇంకా ప్రథానమైన కథాంశం అంటూ ఒకటి లేదు. దీన్ని ఆ కాలపు అనేక ముఖాలు కలిగున్న రాయలసీమ కథ ఇంకా ముఖ్యంగా అప్పటి పీడితులైన అణచివేయబడ్డ వారి కథ అని చెప్పవచ్చు.

Fastest read so far in the season, probably the last one too. Entire credit goes to the book. "Shaptabhoomi". It surely is an epic standard work. Bandi Narayana swami garu hats off to you 🙏🙏🙏 It is incredible work.

Brilliant piece of historic fiction with a vast array of characters. I admire the author's wealth of information about the practices, traditions and rituals of various classes and tribes in 18th century Anantapur kingdom.

చరిత్ర అంటే రాజులు, రాజ్యాలు,పండితులు,పద్యాలు, యుద్దాలు..ఇవేనా?? దీనికి మించి ఇంకా ఏమి లేదా??
చరిత్ర అంటే ఒక ఊరు లేదా ప్రదేశం ఎలా అభివృద్ధి చెందిందో, ఆ ఊరికి ఆ పేరు ఎలా వచ్చిందో, అప్పటికి సాంఘిక పరిస్థితులు ఎలా ఉండేవో, పండుగలు ఎలా జరిపుకున్నారో అని ప్రతి విషయాన్ని తెలుసుకోవడం...
రాయలసీమ చరిత్ర, మరీ ముఖ్యంగా అనంతపురం చరిత్ర గురించి తెలుసుకోవాలి అంటే "శప్త భూమి" నవల చదవాల్సిందే....

The premise is great. The number of intertwined stories within a very small kingdom is great. Reading about the places and rituals from where I grew up was a great experience. The three stars are for these.
But the book heavily falters on what a historic novel should be. Having a great setting and characters do not make a great story without at least a decent presentation. The book loads the reader with a huge number of characters, their history and many more details in first few pages tracking or remembering of which is impossible without jotting down family trees of each character and their linkages to other characters. The book would have been equally great and wholesome even if each character’s journey was traced as a separate chapter (something like Manu Pillai’s the courtesan, the mahatma and the Italian brahmin or even like David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas) but the editor/publisher didn’t do justice to the way the story had to be presented. The story deserved a lot better treatment.

Just because there are a few warring characters? Shapta Bhoomi is a snapshot of life in a time and place while GoT is set as war drama for one singular objective- the iron throne. We are misguiding readers with that comparison and robbing this book of what it actually is.
It still is a good read given you keep a notebook to track each character introduced and their background but might still be exhausting with of lot of disconnects.
But the book heavily falters on what a historic novel should be. Having a great setting and characters do not make a great story without at least a decent presentation. The book loads the reader with a huge number of characters, their history and many more details in first few pages tracking or remembering of which is impossible without jotting down family trees of each character and their linkages to other characters. The book would have been equally great and wholesome even if each character’s journey was traced as a separate chapter (something like Manu Pillai’s the courtesan, the mahatma and the Italian brahmin or even like David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas) but the editor/publisher didn’t do justice to the way the story had to be presented. The story deserved a lot better treatment.

రాయలసీమకు సంబందించిన అప్పటి పరిస్థితులు, సామాజిక అంశాలు తెలుసుకోవాలని చాలా కోరిక ఉండేది. శప్తభూమి వాటికి మించిన కోణాలు, దృశ్యాలు, కథల్ని చూపించింది. ఒక ప్రాంతీయ చారిత్రిక నవలగా ప్రారంభమయిన ఈ పుస్తకం, సామాజిక, దళిత బహుజన నవలగా రూపాంతరం చెందిన తీరు అద్భుతం. ఎన్నో విషయాలు, సతీ సహగమనం ఒక 200-300 ఏళ్ళ క్రితం ఉండేది అని ఎవరైనా చెప్పినా నమ్మేవాడ్ని కాదు. ఖండిణీ రూకలు, వర్తక శ్రేణులు, సుంకాలు, రైతు ఇల్లాండ్ర పైన లైంగిక దాడులు, ఎన్నో, మరెన్నో చారిత్రక ఆధారాలు, సంఘటనల సమాహరమే ఈ పుస్తకం. నాకు అనిపించిన ఒకే ఒక్క సమస్య ఏంటంటే... పాత్రలు ఎక్కువ ఉండటం మూలాన వాటితో ప్రయాణం కొంచెం కష్టం అయింది... ఒక 5 నిమిషాలు పట్టేది వాళ్ళ కథలోకి మళ్ళీ వెళ్ళటానికి.....! But nevertheless, I can see myself immersing in this and other శ్రీ బండి నారాయణ స్వామి గారి books lot more times👍

ఇలాంటి నేపథ్యం ఉన్న నవల తెలుగులో మొదటిసారి చదవటం.
చదివించేందుకు కష్టపెడుతుంది... బాగోలేక కాదు.
నిర్వేదం... కరువు కాటకాలు తాండవం ఆడే నేలపై కట్టుబాట్లు, మూఢ నమ్మకాలు, జాత్యహంకారం, వివక్ష, అన్నీ చుట్టారు రచయిత.
టూకీగా గేమ్ ఆఫ్ త్రోన్స్ కు తీసిపోని కథాంశం, కథనం.
