An epic, humorous and quite unique historical novel which looks at Central Europe in the 16th century—a territory plagued by ceaseless battles for supremacy between the Protestant political elite and the ruling Catholic Habsburg Monarchy, as well as the ongoing battle between the sexes. In Kumerdej's wonderful saga, history and fiction intertwine in wavelike fashion, produ ...more

Not sure what I was expecting from this, and not sure yet what it is. Superstition and resentment and fear in 16th century Slovenia is a good start, though.

Although this novel is set during the Counter-Reformation of 1600 in present day Slovenia, I wouldnt classify it as a "historical novel." The novel bends genres between historical fiction, philosophy, with a sprinkle of fantasy/sci-fi. There is definitely a framework of a good book here, but the social commentary was so ham-fisted that I can only give it 3 stars. ...more

The book features Catholics, Lutherans and 'witches', aristocrats, city states and peasants in the late mediaeval Holy Roman Empire (more specifically Slovenian Inner Austria) during the Counter-Reformation. The author uses a mixture of history and magic, which reflects the superstitious age.
