I am a frequent cozy mystery reader and often search out new series. When Vikki Walton's new 'Backyard Farming' mystery series fell into my lap, I jumped on the chance to read the first book, Chicken Culprit: (Backyard Farming Mystery Series) (Cozy Mystery). Walton is a new author for me, but one I enjoyed getting to know. In this caper, a ~40ish woman moves to a small Colorado town known for homesteading. As the story evolves, we learn she has a lot more connections to it than we originally ...more

There are many things I enjoy about cozies. I like meeting all of the quirky characters. The stories are usually set in small towns. I live in one and can relate. And the mysteries, while mostly murders, aren’t gruesome.

Anne Freemont hasn’t even had time to settle into the old Victorian she just purchased before she’s tangled up in the murder of her neighbor. While not a suspect herself, a young woman she’s become friends with is the main suspect and begs her to help clear her name. Having no

This was my first time reading Vikki Walton and I enjoyed it. I’m not sure if the series will continue with characters from this book or if there will be new characters and locations with each new book. I hope that it will be the same characters because I like them very much and because I like a nice romance to go with my mysteries, and this book didn’t have any romance at all. It would be nice to see the main character grow

Anne finds herself in love with an entire town. I liked Kandi’s funny take on life. The description of the town and it’s people was enticing.

I had no idea what to expect when I picked up this book, but was intrigued enough by the cover and description to try this new-to-me author, and I’m so glad I did! Chicken Culprit is uniquely different from other cozy mysteries that I’ve read and I love Vikki Walton’s fresh voice and style. With this first book in her homesteading series, she has created a setting and community of characters that feel real and I’m very eager for more. In short, Chicken Culprit

Never been to Colorado and was easily pulled in and felt as if that was the state I was in while reading this book. This is a cozy mystery with some twist that wasn't expected but yet glad to be seen. Love the smooth writing skills of the author and the feel of wanting more and knowing that this will be the first of a good series!

Reading for pleasure can’t get much better than this. I fell in love with the characters, and having lived in Denver, I could just picture the setting of the fictional town Carolan Springs. I’m also a backyard farmer (sans chickens) and laughed until my sides hurt at the descriptions of the compost patch. Just when I thought I had it figured out, Walton hit me with another twist; so masterful is her ability to weave a tale. And the humor is appropriate, even when talking about murder. There are ...more

Just a delight

Reading this book really was a delight. I enjoyed this mystery wholeheartedly and I am really hoping there will be many more of these as a series. I loved the characters!
The best part was the ending. The mystery was solved and then there was a sweet surprise at the end.
Thank you, Vikki Walton, please write many more books!

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest and thoughtful review.

This was definitely a book that took me by surprise! I typically only read cozies that fall within my interests, which explains why you'll see me review a lot of them featuring books, libraries, food, and sometimes crafts. I was largely intrigued by the author's giveaway for this tour, which included the winner's ability to help create a character in the next book. That is an absolutely fantastic idea and I

I loved the small town atmosphere and how all the people looked out for each other. It is a refreshing story that had me loving all the characters. I love apples and it was so intriguing to read how they used the apples to make their own apple cider. Carolan Springs is the perfect place to relax, refresh and perhaps hide from the media. Anne is hoping she can blend in as she decides to buy a quaint Victorian house .

I really liked Anne and thought she had the patience of a saint when she bet her

This is such a nice book. It's been a while since I read a good mystery that didn't have a trusted character turning out to be some creepy psychopath. I'm a farm girl, so I enjoyed the homesteading, the chickens, the fresh veggies, the home-made foods, and especially the close-knit family-like community. I liked the characters, especially Sherrif Carson. I think I liked him a tad more than popcorn-fragrant Sam Powers. Sherrif Carson's cold demeanour and self-satisfied smirk are what make him ...more

Vicki Walton's Chicken Culprit is the first in a new series. I love finding new cozy series at the start.

Its a quick read and I love that the setting of series is unique. I've only read one other cozy that involves farming or rather homesteading. I like to see series divert from the usual.

Anne is escaping from her old life and meets Kandi shortly after moving into her new Victorian. Kandi is "like" really fond of the word "like." Apparently that girl is trapped in an 80s "Valley Girl" type

Anna Freenant is trying to start again, in a new place, a new house and maybe some new friends... but a murder never entered in her plans! So now, she will have to discover the truth if she wants to continue with her new life...!

Since the first page I felt in love with this little village and all the neighbours in it. Yes, there's a killer between them, and let me say that I hope there will be more, because I can't wait to read a new mystery with all these characters. Everyone is welcoming and

Newcomer, Anne Fremont, arrives in Caroltan, newly divorced and trying to regain her composure.. Barely has the moving boxes ceased arriving than Anne finds out she has moved into a neighborhood that feels somewhat unique.

Rushing to aid a woman screaming 'Help' next door, Anne meets the first two residents. Mr. Rogers is in the neighborhood, only he isn't as nice as the televised one. The screamer is Kandi. Kandi is trying to save her pet Rusty, a chicken whom, it appears, loves heirloom

What a wonderful story. Set in Colorado, it felt like a Beatrice Potter story in the beginning. Then switched gears and then again. I don't want to ruin anything or give away the story because I really enjoyed every word. I love the main character Anne who is very down to earth, and Kandi who is so sweet. A suspected murder turns these small Colorado towns people into detectives and almost everyone is a suspect. I was left guessing until the very end. The extra closure at the end is very, very ...more

Moving to a new neighborhood can be murder!
From the moment Anne meets her new neighbors, things get very interesting. They are a quirky bunch, traipsing in and out of Anne's house at will. She moved to the country for peace and quiet and anonymity. It didn't last long.
Her neighbor, Kandi, a chatterbug who thinks age 40 is OLD, can be annoying, but she's sort of annoyingly cute. She is also very naive. Vikki Walton writes characters that bring out strong emotions in a reader. Kandi's husband, in

Chicken Culprit is a great read that isn't too heavy. Yes, there is murder, and it also includes some mention of heavy subjects, but it's not so dark that you feel heavy and overwhelmed. Anne Fremont has left her old life behind for a fresh start in a small town in Colorado. Her first day she meets a few neighbors; within days one will be dead and another accused of his murder. All evidence seems to point to an open and shut case, but Anne feels compelled to dig out the truth. This book was the ...more

What a great beginning for a new series. I loved the protagonist! She is a wonderfully and realistically drawn woman facing middle age. Her backstory was skillfully and surprisingly revealed. Interesting to see how she develops. I howled and winched at one of the secondary character's reliance on the word "like". It is pet peeve, ironic since I work on a college campus. Glad to read a kindred spirit who winces as well. The murder was creatively solved and was happy that one of the more ...more

I absolutely loved this book. I bought this book for my daughter who raises and shows chickens. She loved it so much she had me read it I love the characters, the chickens and the homesteading idea. I think Walton's take on a cozy mystery is very refreshing The story flows smoothly, and the mystery unfolded without me having a clue as to how it would end and the ending really surprised me. Anne is a funny and strong main character and I loved each character. I really liked the fact that Hope was ...more

Good mystery!

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.

This mystery has more twists and turns than a mountain road. I was unable to put it down. The characters are well written. There are a lot of introductions, as a first book in a series usually has, but it is done well. I was blown away by the end. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book & think you'll want

Living in a new neighborhood, Ann finds that her neighbors are quite unusual. Kandi, a young woman, raises chickens much to the disapproval of Ralph, her neighbor. When Ralph is found murdered Kani seems to be the likely suspect. Kandi becomes friendly with Ann and implores her to investigate since she claims she is innocent. Can Ann, a newcomer in town, find the murderer.?
A well-written story with likable characters.

I really enjoyed this mystery. Just when I thought that I knew who the killer was, someone else popped up. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and really liked them. Anne has moved to town after a very bad marriage and is befriended by everyone. When her neighbor is murdered and the person caught, Anne starts to investigate because she knows Kandi could not have done it. When her identity is discovered, she becomes an instant celebrity in town but almost loses her friend.

This is a cozy mystery in which a woman tries to prove that her friend did not commit murder. There are lots of suspects for her to consider. I feel that the plot and characters could have been better developed. I also think the ending is a bit contrived. I also saw errors in pronoun usage that a good proof reader should have caught. I did like the friendship and warmth of the townspeople toward each other though.

Enjoyed the book immensely. Well written, great characters and good storyline. The only thing that could be improved is a little better proof reading and that is the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I particularly like the ending and solution - never saw it coming and I like that.
But, all in all, I will be looking forward to reading more in this series.
