Six Qualities of Women of Character: Life-Changing Examples of Godly Women

Rate this book
In Women of Character, Debra Evans introduces a dozen biblical and historical figures whose lives exemplify six life-changing character traits of a godly Brokenness - spiritual awakening through repentance; Belief - the power of faith in the face of adversity; Surrender - intimacy through total yieldedness; Obedience - the transformational freedom of obeying God; Devotion - the wealth of a worshipful heart; and Service - replacing self-direction with God's calling. With a refreshingly accessible depth of thought, Evans portrays flesh-and-blood women with whom you'll immediately identify, from the wide-eyed adolescent to the jaded harlot. Their problems were the same as those we face Lack of faith. Loveless marriage. Sexual sin. Loneliness and loss. And though their stories span centuries, the pattern is clear - God's blessing of our lives arrives when our deeper hunger drives us to seek his presence in the face of adversity.
Woven throughout Women of Character are poignant prayers, interviews with contemporary women, and writings by classic Christian thinkers. More than an abstract devotional, Women of Character will change forever the way you think about saints. In these remarkable tales of empowerment, focus, and meaningful living, you will see the exquisite pattern God laid out for women throughout history - and be inspired to find your own place among "the company of heaven."

It didn’t bring any new ideas, nor made me question anything from it. However, hearing the stories of women and how God used them then and how it is still applicable today. That is the true meaning of this book. To be in awe of how God moved His ministry through the women of character.

Each chapter of this delightful book focuses on one quality and two women who exemplified said quality. The end of each chapter includes discussion questions and it would be enjoyable to read through it with a group. There are some presumptions made about a few of the women's lives based on what life may have been like at that time. There is also a section about Susanna, whose story is taken from the Apocrypha. Over all an encouraging read.
