Birds hold a tremendous amount of fascination to me and to many others throughout the world. The variety of birds is mind boggling. Their beauty is stunning. Their habits and life patterns fascinating.
Books about birds from all parts of the World are treasures. Treasures because they brings bits and pieces of this beauty to our homes and we can sit and enjoy at our leisure.
Magnificent Birds is written is a simple, flowing text that is easily understood by the upper elementary grade level child. The amount of factual information is terse and to the point and without complexity. This makes for enjoyable, yet educational, reading. The book is produced in collaboration with the British Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
The illustrations are made with an art form that is a bit stark. Colors are somewhat dense and on some pages appear dull to this reader. However, they may depict with a degree of accuracy the colorsphere of the location and birds being presented in the drawings.
I found the book to be highly informative and quite enjoyable. I think it a good addition to public and school libraries as well as the home-school library. "Birders" might enjoy perusing the book, but might prefer a more detailed presentation. The book is beautifully bound and quite sturdy.

A book like this longs to be placed face-out, on display, where it will catch the eye and interest of passers-by. The gorgeous linocut prints spread across two-pages, supporting factual information about birds that are well known and also birds that are lesser known. I'm always looking for quality nonfiction picture books to read aloud to my students, and this will certainly be put in the line-up (and also on display)!
Illustrator Narisa Togo has created this lovely book featuring fourteen different birds and it certainly reflects her own lifelong avian love. Each bird is placed in its customary habitat and given a two page linocut spread done in a palette of soft, subtle but natural color. Accompanying each illustration is text that gives the bird's name, species, and to where it is native. For example, the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, Arcbilocbus Colubris, Native to North and Central America. Togo has really captured the natural beauty and drama of each bird, from the more common of the species to the more unusual, offering the reader a wide variety from around the world. Young readers who are already interested in birds will appreciate this book, and those who haven't discovered the fascinating world of birding are in for a real treat.
Magnificent Birds by Narisa Togo This is a gorgeously illustrated non-fiction book, one that would be comfortable on a coffee table as well as in the hands of a child who loves picture books and is interested in birds and nature. Each carefully crafted linoleum-cut print is accompanied by a capsule about eat specific bird, offering just enough information to peak interest. I love the soft color palette and the lines in the prints lend a sense of movement and a life-like feeling to the birds. This is a beautiful artistic book that highlights the love of birds, nature and looking up!

Thank you to Jessica Kingsley Publishers for sending me a copy of this book. All opinions stated are my own.
I have a lifelong love of birds. This book is stunning. Narisa Togo’s prints are gorgeous. This is a must have for a classroom or children’s library. Love this beautiful book. The colors! The birds! Oh my.
Absolutely gorgeous! So great to see a book with birds of the Pacific Rim here in the US, too.
This book feels like it's really all about enjoying the art and the sense of the birds in their landscape that it conveys. Good but brief information on each bird.
An elementary and up book about different types of birds. Each two page spread features a different bird and facts about said bird. Not overwheleming but very informative
Had the author included back matter with the text, this would have been a 5 star for me. Even still, the information included is well written and engaging. The illustrations are simply stunning.
Readers will be captivated by the wealth of information about various types of birds found within this beautiful collection. Togo’s rich colors and artistic renderings bring these stunning birds to life.
Candlewick Press may have provided the text for Magnificent Birds but Narisa Togo's illustrations give the book its heart and soul. She is an artist living and working in Japan and has a life long love for birds. I read her book as research and inspiration for the summer camp I was planning: birds of a feather, dinosaurs together.
