Having returned to Chicago, young socialite Anna Nicholson can't seem to focus on her upcoming marriage. The new information she's learned about her birth mother continues to pull at her, and she hires Pinkerton detectives to help her find the truth. But as she meets people who once knew her mother and hears stories about the past, Anna soon discovers that some secrets are better left hidden.

At the same time, unflattering stories about Anna are leaked by someone who would love to see her disgraced and her engagement broken. And as Anna tries to share her faith with her society friends, she understands that her choice to seek God's purpose for her life isn't as simple as she had hoped.

When things are at their darkest, Anna knows she can turn to her grandmother, Geesje de Jonge, back in Holland, Michigan. Geesje's been helping new Dutch immigrants, including a teen with a haunted past, adjust to America. She only hopes that her wisdom can help all these young people through the turmoil they face.

Lynn Austin

For many years, Lynn Austin nurtured a desire to write but frequent travels and the demands of her growing family postponed her career. When her husband's work took Lynn to Bogota, Colombia, for two years, she used the B.A. she'd earned at Southern Connecticut State University to become a teacher. After returning to the U.S., the Austins moved to Anderson, Indiana, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

It was during the long Canadian winters at home with her children that Lynn made progress on her dream to write, carving out a few hours of writing time each day while her children napped. Lynn credits her early experience of learning to write amid the chaos of family life for her ability to be a productive writer while making sure her family remains her top priority.

Extended family is also very important to Austin, and it was a lively discussion between Lynn, her mother, grandmother (age 98), and daughter concerning the change in women's roles through the generations that sparked the inspiration for her novel Eve's Daughters.

Along with reading, two of Lynn's lifelong passions are history and archaeology. While researching her Biblical fiction series, Chronicles of the Kings, these two interests led her to pursue graduate studies in Biblical Backgrounds and Archaeology through Southwestern Theological Seminary. She and her son traveled to Israel during the summer of 1989 to take part in an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Timnah. This experience contributed to the inspiration for her novel Wings of Refuge.

Lynn resigned from teaching to write full-time in 1992. Since then she has published 27 novels. Eight of her historical novels, Hidden Places, Candle in the Darkness, Fire by Night, A Proper Pursuit, and Until We Reach Home have won Christy Awards in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009 for excellence in Christian Fiction. Fire by Night was also one of only five inspirational fiction books chosen by Library Journal for their top picks of 2003, and All She Ever Wanted was chosen as one of the five inspirational top picks of 2005. Lynn's novel Hidden Places has been made into a movie for the Hallmark Channel, starring actress Shirley Jones. Ms Jones received a 2006 Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Aunt Batty in the film.

I loved this book so much. I haven’t read many historical books in first person, but this one fit it perfectly.

The book shares the stories of two characters : Anna and her grandma, Geesje. So much happened for both of them, and I loved seeing how it all fell into place. Anna’s story was probably my favorite, though I also really enjoyed Geesje’s. Cornelia was such a sweet and gentle character, and I loved hearing about her story as well. You can’t help but just love these characters.

For a good portion of the book, Anna is looking for her birth dad. I loved getting to read about her search and having it leading up to finding her mother’s diary with Derk. There was always something happening, and I never quite knew how it was all going to turn out. The ending was just perfect, and tied everything together wonderfully.

I really enjoyed this book and I definitely recommend it. Engagements are broken and truths of the past are revealed. I enjoyed every minute of this book.

4.5 A delightful Christian themed, romantic, historical fiction read. Of course it had happy endings for all the main characters. However I did enjoy the historical fiction aspect: involving Dutch immigrants to Holland MI about 150 years ago. Learning of how they adapted and learned to make a new life in America.
I especially liked Lynn Austin's writing style. Unputdownable

I didn't know this was a sequel until I started reading it; thankfully, upon starting it, I discovered that I had read the first book a while ago, as I recalled the events referenced here.

This was a great story of overcoming tragedy; it had a lot of twists and turns. I'm glad my online book club chose this one for the month of September.

Somehow I missed the fact that Legacy of Mercy was the sequel to Waves of Mercy, so I got to discover the connection as I began reading. Imagine my delight to be reunited with Anneke, Derk, and Geesje! I have always wished for more to this story, and now I was given a conclusion that made my heart happy. However, if you haven’t yet read Waves of Mercy, the author does a nice job of summing it up in the first few pages of this next book.

Anneke (Anna) is caught in an impossible situation in several areas of her life. While learning more about her birth mother opened her heart in new ways – including a relationship with Jesus – it also exposed her to more vulnerability as she struggles to join her two worlds. Her birth mother’s life is shunned by Anna’s society circles, and living out her fledgling faith isn’t easy among people who care more about appearances than loving the least of these. While my heart ached for Anna and the hard life lessons she’s forced to learn in Legacy of Mercy, I also loved the journey that Austin took her on in the process. Additionally, Anna’s continued search for information about her birth father – which takes her down a path of potential scandals and long buried secrets – had me riveted to the page as new leads surfaced only to take unexpected turns.

Back in Michigan, we get to spend lots of time with Geesje (though it’s never enough because I love her so much) and her steady wisdom and big heart. As God brings two wounded souls into her life, we get to see her ‘tough love’ side as never before and oh what we could all learn from her. When to correct and when just to love. As my friend Katie said, “oh, that we could all have a Geesje in our lives!”

Bottom Line: Austin’s writing is always impeccable, and Legacy of Mercy is no exception. There’s so much more I wanted to talk about in this review but didn’t, for sake of avoiding spoilers. However, if you have read this book too and want to chat with me about it, I still have a lot to gush over haha! More than the great characters, spot-on characterization, and vivid setting & time, though, is the gentle message of mercy that manifests as both a legacy and a fresh start. More than once, it had me in tears, so touched was I by the events unfolding on the page and the embrace of mercy on their lives. If you’re a fan of stories that linger with you, make sure you add this book to your TBR list!

This is the first Lynn Austin novel I have read, and I have to say, I was greatly impressed!

Despite this being book two in a series, I was able to jump right into the story without any confusion and still be just as attached to the characters, despite not knowing their complete story. I quickly fell in love with the beautiful and realistic characters in this story. While I loved Anna, I had a hard time relating to her based on the decisions she made, so I have to say I loved Geesje's storyline better. She's just such a beautiful character, and I can't wait to go back and read book one to learn more about her. I also loved Cornelia's character, and the storyline between her and her grandfather was incredibly touching and inspiring!

The story was very interesting, and while I expected to be bored, I wasn't at all. There was not one time I wasn't invested in the story and anxious to see what would happen next. I particularly loved all the historical detail Austin includes in her story. For example, a little-known fact is that on the day of the Great Chicago Fire, massive fires broke out all over the state of Michigan and caused an incredible amount of damage to large portions of the state and destroyed much of Michigan's timber, known as "green gold" for its great value. I appreciated how Austin included this information along with the history of the Great Chicago Fire. Also, I found it very interesting to be reading about Holland, MI, as I have frequently been there, so to learn some of the history of it was fascinating for me.

All in all, I greatly enjoyed this beautiful novel by Lynn Austin, and look forward to reading the first book, and more from this talented historical author! Highly recommended!

CONTENT NOTE: Recommended for ages 16+ for mild romance and mentions of illegitimate births and domestic abuse.

The Refiner's Fire Series by Lynn Austin was the best book series I've ever read. I read the books in the series as soon as they released and the stories have stayed with me. I remember how impressed with the books in the series I was and still am. This series just may top it! Some author's change their writing style with the more books they release, not so with this author. If anything her writing style just continues to improve. She gives us a glimpse into the life of Anna Nicholson, a young socialite. Engaged to a wealthy young man, William she plays the part of happy fiancee but she's really not. This young woman was adopted as a very young child when her mother was killed in a boating accident. Anna is on a mission to find out all she can about her birth mother. The more she delves into family secrets the more complicated it becomes. Sometimes what you uncover from hidden secrets can have devastating consequences. Even though she has grown up rich with her adoptive parents does she really fit in with the gossips? Is the opulence what she even really wants in life? A compassionate story, Austin weaves a masterful story of profound faith and overcoming weakness in the darkest times with faith, love and forgiveness.

Legacy of Mercy is the second and final book in the Waves of Mercy series. While I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first novel, Waves of Mercy, it was well done and I loved the characters.

The mystery about Anna's birth parents was fun to unravel. There was one spoiler line about the birth father, but not a huge impact because it was pretty clear who it would be at that point.

I so loved Oma, Anna's birth grandmother. New to Legacy of Mercy was Cornelia and her grandfather. They just arrived from The Netherlands and had several issues to work though.

I highly recommend this two book historical series.

Legacy of Mercy by Lynn Austin is a Christian historical fiction novel that is the sequel to Waves of Mercy that continues the story of Anna Nicholson. Set in the early 1900s, the novel follows Anna as she navigates uncovering her family's past while dealing with her own identity and future.
I enjoyed this novel more than the first which I granted a 5🌟. I got used to the writing style. The prayers and God references. As a believer it was a bit cheesy and over the top at times. Then I realized what is being spoken is often what I speak to myself in my head. Then it didn’t feel odd or cheesy anymore. It felt genuine.
This is a lovely story with a strong focus on faith and personal growth. Though the ending is a happy one, I hate knowing there will be no more Anna stories.

Legacy of Mercy was just as amazing as book one. I grew to love these characters and was so happy that their story continued on in this book.

The romance was good. I was hoping for a happily ever after and think this book delivered that. I was intrigued by the mystery of her mom and the events surrounding her past. I was surprised by certain aspects and couldn't read fast enough.

All in all, Legacy of Mercy was a fantastic read and I definitely recommend it. I'm hoping for another book with these characters as I'm not ready to say goodbye yet.

WOW. This book. It completely blew me away. I loved it even more than book 1. So much was revealed!! I was SHOCKED and LOVED what was happening! Lynn Austin is an amazing storyteller.

In book 2, we continue our journey with Anna, Geesje, Derk and a new character introduced Cornelia and her grandfather. Cornelia is a young 17 year old girl with a tragic past and Geesje is helping her in her healing. Anna is trying to find answers to her family’s past and decide what to do in her marriage situation.

Lynn has written these character’s stories where they truly LIVE off the page and feel so real. You truly feel their stories and what they are going through. The Lord truly worked in this story. SO CAPTIVATING. This really reminds us that God will use our difficult experiences for the good of others, if we let Him. This continuation truly gives us so many spiritual truths that we can all learn from.

I highly recommend ya’ll pick up Waves of Mercy and Legacy of Mercy. There are so many twists and turns with beautiful faith revelations. 5 stars!

Okay. So I know I’ve said this a lot lately but this book blew me away. I wish there was a 3rd book. I just want more. I love this story, the characters, the faith. Everything. I didn’t want it to end. I just want to keep reading and seeing what God does in these peoples lives. I think I enjoyed this book more than the first but only because we just got so many more answers and background info to current situations in the book. Both are 5 stars without a doubt.

This may become my favorite book of all time. The way that faith was so prominent and used in this series was just wow. Even tho it’s a totally different time frame and personal backgrounds of these characters I related so much to them. Especially Geesje. There’s everything in this book: love, loss, doubt, healing and so much more. If anything this book has given me hope & truly has helped me realize that no matter what, God is always there. We can go through the most horrific things in life and we may not get answers until heaven but at the end of the day if we had everything taken away from us the one thing that will ALWAYS remain is God & His unending love for us. Thank can never be taken away from us. What a reminder and it is definitely making me analyze my life and how I’m serving God and others.

I loved this partner book to Waves of Mercy.

There is something about a Lynn Austin book: I just immediately fall into the story and her warm narrative and the way she slowly unravels each thread of her well-researched historical inclusion holds me close until I am completely immersed and transported. Often, it is several hours before I look up and realize that I am not in Anna and Geesje's world but in my own.

I found this duology was a welcome insight into Austin's obvious passion for her home of Holland, Michigan and while each of her historical offerings is resplendent in its own way, the heart-tie and connection were especially welcome in this soft character piece.

The soft romance of Anna and Derk spoke to my love-story heart and Geesje's salt of the earth wisdom was so refreshing and speaks to a common thread of Austin's older generations serving at once as pragmatic and humorous.

Lynn Austin is a perennial favourite: she deals with fledgling faith in a non-judgmental and delicate way and there are few authors who delve so wonderfully into the complexity of flawed humanity.

There is simply no historical era she cannot wrap around her finger and we readers are so privileged for this unparalleled gift.

Legacy of Mercy by Lynn Austin
Location: Holland, Michigan and Chicago
Timeframe: 1897
Anna Nicholson: Engaged to a man she doesn’t love
Derk Vander Veen: Seminary student, drawn to Anna
Geesje de Jonge: Anna’s grandmother she just met
Cornelia Den Herder: 17 year old Geesje took in, new to America
Dominie Den Herder: Cornelia’s bitter grandfather, pastor from Holland
William Wilkinson: Anna’s fiancé
Clarice Beacham: William’s angry ex-girlfriend intent on revenge

2023: I just reread this "review" from four years ago and realized I used to make my reviews more of a synopsis than simply my thoughts on the book. I did this because often I’d forget what a book was about within a year. But I’ve been told it’s unfair to give too much away and should consider reviews like this as spoilers. Personally I like reading what's in a book, so if you do too, feel free to look at the spoiler. If not, I've hidden it here.

This two-book series was so different from other books by this author. As far as I know she’s never written about immigrants or Dutch communities. Different, but very, very good.

I was very excited to read this author and the story did not disappoint. Since this is book two in the series, I thought it stood alone very well and the author gave you all the necessary information to not feel like you were missing important details. That being said, I’ve already picked up book one, Waves of Mercy, and do plan to read that one as well.

I think Austin’s gift is writing wonderful, multi-faceted characters with great depth that draw you right into their story. The heroine, Anna Nicholson, comes from a world of wealth and privilege, but undeniably feels God’s call on her life to serve him. As the story unfolds, Anna’s faith blossoms. She is torn between William, a man she cares about and is expected to marry, and Derk, the man she loves. I especially enjoyed the way Austin drew fine distinctions between the two men and Anna’s choices without demonizing either of them.

Tante Geejse, Anna’s biological grandmother is not only the rock of the book, but of her family and community as well. Kind, compassionate and filled with faith, Geejse reminded me of my own precious grandmother Criste. She welcomes Cornelia, a young immigrant girl with a tragic past, into her home. Cornelia has faced unthinkable heartache yet was forced to bury it deep inside instead of dealing with the pain. But slowly Geesje helps her to confront her past, grieve her losses, and find hope in God for her future. Although Geesje occasionally borders on the preachy side, you’re willing to overlook it especially when she’s confronting Cornnelia’s overbearing grandfather.

Austin doesn’t shy away from some difficult topics either– attempted suicide, sexual and physical abuse, and teen pregnancy. Though handled in a tasteful manner without any graphic details, this degree of realism may be distressing for some younger readers.

As both a reader and writer of historical romance, I have high expectations when it comes to historical accuracy. Austin effortlessly weaves historical details that bring the Gilded Age to life before your eyes—butlers and maid servants, societal expectations and the importance of keeping up appearances. The author paints a beautiful comparison between the heroine’s life of privilege and her grandmother’s modest lifestyle among the Dutch immigrants in the small town of Holland, Michigan. Austin’s vivid descriptions of the stately mansions in Chicago’s Lakeshore district as well as the run down inner city tenements immerse you in the time period, and will leave you lifting your pinky as you sip your tea or feeling the need to wipe the grime and soot from your skin.

Just as good as the first book! Anna learns the truth about her past and is challenged to put her faith into action. Geesje takes in a troubled young woman with a harsh grandfather and slowly helps her see God’s love and mercy. I loved this storyline because it showed that there’s no age limit to when God can use you, and there’s no age limit to when you can discover God for who He is.

Every time I read a Lynn Austin book it further cements her place as one of my all-time favourite authors. This series was wonderful and worthy of every minute spent reading it!

Lynn Austin is one of my favorite authors and while Legacy of Mercy wasn't my favorite of her books, I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

WHAT I LIKED

-Anna/Anneke was a wonderful main character. I loved her gentle, caring spirit and her determination to discover the truth about her past. Geesje (how do you pronounce her name?) was also a great character, though I preferred the chapters from Anna's point of view.
-Can I just marry Derk? Love, love, love him. I kept imagining him as Michael Huisman (as he appears in the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society movie) so that was definitely a plus.
-I liked Anna's search for the truth about her parents and loved how that whole subplot tied up!
-Love the romance. For a bit I was worried that Lynn Austin wouldn't wrap it up the way I wanted but she totally did.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE

-This book didn't grab my heart the way so many other Lynn Austin books have done. But it totally might work for you!
-As I kinda mentioned before, Geesje's point of view wasn't my favorite.

Overall, fans of Christian historical romance will probably love this book.

I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for my honest review.

I couldn't put this book down! A wonderful sequel to waves of Mercy! I especially love how the author uses scenarios that are familiar for any human, using stories of broken hearts, unforgiveness, bitterness, gossip, and so many others to teach and remind me of what the Bible teaches. I am from the town where part of the book takes place, and I love the descriptions of how the town was over 100 years ago.
Another great book that I will read and reread from Lynn Austin!

As I was reading this I realized that this was the second book in this series and I had not read the first one, that being said, I was not lost, enough information was given that I was able to enjoy this read.
Through the author’s pen we are given an insight into the Word of God and how it applies to everyday life, and we soon see how hard it is for the rich to give up and follow.
Yes, this is a different time, but it could apply to today, and as I was reading this story we put faces on those with much and those who readily share all that they have. Opulence in excess, and then poverty that makes you want to turn you head, but not your heart.
I found myself wanting get to the end of this book, for answers, but not wanting to leave, and now wanting to spend more time with these characters,

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.

Although I love to read, I don't believe I've ever read a novel in two days. But despite my crazy schedule and the fact that doing so meant I had to stay up WAY too late, I read "Legacy of Mercy" in just two sittings. I felt compelled to keep reading because it's just THAT GOOD. This novel moved me repeatedly and is a great reminder of the importance of mercy in our lives. Highly recommended.

Legacy of Mercy was a great story! We continue the journey with Geesje and Anna and where they picked up with their lives after they met.

Geesje’s part in Cordelia’s healing was lovely to see – she was strong when needed, accepting other times and overall, just showered her with love.

Anna’s journey to help her family but also follow God’s plan for her life was beautifully portrayed. I felt frustration with certain situations she found herself in, especially when I could clearly see she was meant for a different path.

The faith element in this story was beautiful and strong. I loved how it showed if you only trust God everything will fall into place.

Legacy of Mercy is the sequel to Waves of Mercy, by eight-time Christy Award winner, Lynn Austin. I think the cover is stunning and would have caught my eye, even if I hadn't already read many of Lynn Austin's novels. Legacy of Mercy is written in the first person from the perspective of many of the novel's characters. I feel like first person is the most difficult point of view to write in and must be expertly crafted in order for the story to pop off the pages. Legacy of Mercy was missing the "pop" for me. I enjoyed reading Waves of Mercy and was eager to read the rest of Anneke and Derk's story. I would have liked more interaction between Anneke, Derk and William and less of Oma Gessje, Cornelia and Marinus. I loved Anneke's quiet spirit and Derk's devotion to her. I really liked Oma Gessje in the first book but found her a little overbearing in the second, which was kind of sad. The book has a strong spiritual message. In the book readers are reminded that God has created us and placed us where we are for a reason. He has a plan and purpose and when we can't understand the plan or the purpose we can trust Him because His ways are perfect.

Legacy of Mercy will be available for purchase from your local or online retailer on October 2, 2108.

Thank you Bethany House and Net Galley for the free copy of Legacy of Mercy. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Having enjoyed 'Waves of Mercy', I was intrigued when I heard that there would be a sequel. I had felt as if Anna's and Geesje's stories weren't quite finished, but understood from the author that she would not be returning to those characters. I'm glad she changed her mind!
I liked getting to know Anna in Chicago, amongst her family and acquaintances in the upper-class society. I felt for her as she tried to find out what had happened to her Mama, and how she could reconcile the faint memories she had of her with what she was learning from the Pinkerton detectives.
I also appreciated the perspective of Geesje back in Holland, and how she helps Cornelia find peace through Christ. I always end up enjoying grandmotherly figures in stories: they seem so wise and loving.
I enjoyed the twists and turns of the mystery of Christina's 'lost years', as it were; and trying to figure out what would happen next with Anna, Geesje, and Cornelia. But it was definitely the message of grace and mercy (the need to extend it to ourselves as well as others) that was the highlight of the book for me.

I loved this continuation of Geesje and Anna's story. With some answers for her past, Anna returns to the luncheons, teas, literary groups and formal dinners that comprise her life in Chicago. As her faith grows, she begins to realize the shallowness of such a life. There are also many more details about her past that she would like to discover. Life has changed in Holland, Michigan as well. New arrivals from the old country bring new challenges to love people where they are, with Geesje praying she can help as the Lord would.
Can answers be found for Anna, will love win over necessity and can the past be forgiven?
I received an advance copy of this book from Bethany House and all comments and opinions are my own.

You never know if a sequel will be as captivating as the first book in a series. Frankly, I couldn't imagine Lynn Austin topping the story she had spun in Waves of Mercy. But she did! Legacy of Mercy continues the story of Geesje and Anna in turn-of-the-century (19th to 20th) Michigan. I so appreciated being part of their continuing journey as both women navigate heartbreak, love, and loss. The secondary cast of characters was equally compelling, and the plot twists not easily expected (and I like to find them in novels!). I will long remember these novels as they depicted the lives of Dutch immigrants and the choices faced when one wants to live wholly for the Lord.
