The Dog At The Gate is a beautiful story for adults and children. Max is a dog who has not had the easiest life. This poor guy deserved so much better than he got. The humans in the story are the perfect example of how not to treat any animal ever. They wer

Being a huge dog lover I can count on one hand how many years I’ve not had a canine companion in the last 40 some years. Most of the dogs I brought home were either from shelters or they were abandoned by my home. I took them in, loved them and got back way more than I gave. To read about Max was heart breaking. Taken from his mother, abused and neglected by his adopted owners, I wept for this brave dog and couldn’t stop reading his story, hoping he’d find his happy forever home.

Weber Shares a "Real" Look at a Dog's Life. The author really does share some realities (including the harsh ones) with readers through this fictional journey through Max's life, from his point of view. Max's life was difficult and the author shared all of the ups and downs, the pain and joy, the doubts, fears and hopes. Max's story is a difficult one to read at times as the author's writing style gives readers very strong, emotional insights into his world and his experiences.

I really enjoyed The Dog at the Gate: How a Throw Away Dog Becomes Special. It tells the story of the life of an Australian Shepherd named Max. Max is happy living with his mom until he was taken away to live an unloved, neglected, and abused life with a family. He lives outside and finds friends with unlikely characters. When he gets into trouble, he is dropped off at a local animal shelter. Just when things could not get any worse, he is rescued and learns the true meaning of love, friendship, ...more

This reader is delighted with this series. I love dogs. I love stories about dogs. The Dog at the Gate kept me turning the pages. It was hard not to cry at some parts. This was a great story and I enjoyed it.
The author gives the reader insights through the dogs eyes about how to treat a dog.

After several of my coworkers mentioned they’d bought this book for their children, I decided to get it for my little sister for Christmas. I was warned this book made those other kids cry, but me, being made of tougher stuff, thought I could skim through it and be unaffected. I ended up reading the entire thing in one sitting and boo-hooing right along with them! I really appreciate the insight the author has into dog language and behavior - it’s a great way to teach children how to treat any d ...more

How a Throwaway Dog Becomes Special
By Sunny Weber

Max's first 8 weeks of life were the best of his life. He had his brothers, sisters, and mother until he was the last puppy. But when he was taken away to his new home he soon only had one person who cared for and loved him - his boy. He soon learned to distrust big people - they yelled at him and hurt him.

When Max was two years old everything changed when he had to fight to defend himself - he learned he didn't have to be afrai

The Dog at the Gate: How a Throwaway Dog Becomes Special by Sunny Weber was a story that was a must read for any dog lover. It reminded me a bit of the overall feel of Black Beauty, yet it was also very different. I felt so bad for puppy Max as his life was far from easy and then he loses everything he had ever known when he is dropped at an animal shelter. Yet, I could not help, but hope that that was the start of a new life for Max. I could not help, but keep reading as I had to learn what was ...more
