Ice Planet Barbarians #16

Barbarian's Beloved

Rate this book
My tribesmates don’t understand her. The other humans think she’s weak. But no one knows my mate like I do. They don’t see her gentle heart or her brave spirit. I know why she struggles. I know how strong she is. And I know I’ll do anything to make her smile.

But can I convince her that she can be happy in this strange new world with me?

This story explores the long-awaited romance of Ariana and Zolaya. Even though it is a ‘flashback’ to the beginning of the Ice Planet Barbarians series, it can be read out of order.

From the beginning of the series, I didn't like Ariana much...I mean who likes a pathetic mess who cries at the drop of a hat - all the time, until this came along?

It is strange how our society is okay if we are not physically okay but if something happens to our mental health it is not okay at all. People hide their mental illness like it is something to be embarrassed about and can't blame them!

Mental illness like Depression or Anxiety should not be taken lightly and people should seek professional help. But that cannot happen in 'Ice Planet' so poor Ariana didn't have anyone to go to until she found her mate Zolaya. It is a sweet little story which deals with deeper issues.

As Ruby pointed out -

Medication helps. Therapy helps. Talking helps.

I also struggled with ending this on a positive note. Those of you who have anxiety (I'm pretty sure every writer out there just raised their hand in the air) know that you can't 'win' or beat it. It's an ongoing thing. Some days it's great. Some days it's exhausting. I didn't want this book to be all GOOD DICK SAVED HER, GUYS and that she was magically cured with the power of Zolaya's love and his blue dong. Having an understanding partner helps, but it's also self-care and acknowledging that you need help (and okay, the magical cootie takes that edge off in my mind, too).

So there you have it! Wow, this got super deep. Obviously, it hits close to home for me. I realize Ariana's a bit of a different heroine, but in my eyes, she's just as badass as someone like Liz. Hers is just a quiet internal fight. I imagine living on an ice planet without medication and cringe.

Next would be Marlene's story so I am guessing, it would be much more light-hearted than this, so looking forward to it already...

Hi, my name is Whitney and I'm addicted to Ruby Dixon's writing.

For me, there is nothing like Ruby's writing. I can always count on her to whisk me away from my troubles and into her creative world. This is book sixteen, people! And I am still loving this series!

Ariana has what Ruby refers to as a "shitty mind." Her anxiety has reached new heights since being abducted and without her meds. She is worried about everything. The others are getting quite annoyed with her outbursts and uncontrollable crying. But there is one alien who is determined to ease her mind - sweet Zolaya.

Since Ruby was a little late introducing us to Ariana's story, we actually thrown between the past and the present. We get to see a lot about the kits and I have to say that I love it. They are getting so big and developing their own personalities. That fact, along with how Ruby handled Ariana's anxiety, was my favorite part of this book.

It was mentioned in the author's note that the next book will be about Marlene! How flippin' sweet was Marlene and Zennek?! I really can't wait to read their story.

4 STARS!

Ariana and Zolaya

I enjoyed the book very much. The story of Ariana and Zolaya takes us back to the beginning, when the human girls were discovered and saved by the blue aliens. Ariana was the girl who could not stop crying. She was a bit annoying because not enough explanations were given for her constant misery.
Ariana was also one of the first girls who resonated. And she was not comfortable with this in the beginning.

Now we realise that actually Ariana had and still has a medical condition. Her anxiety was treated with medication and meditation back in Earth, but now she has to be strong without any doctor's help.

Zolaya is an amazing mate. Patient, understanding and sweet. He will offer her exactly what she needs: stability, time, love, her own pace, tenderness. He was a virgin when they resonated, but he will catch up quickly like all the blue Barbarians.

Together they will create a beautiful home and a family, living a simple life.

The events in the book take place in two time periods:
1. When everything started about 8 years ago
2. Now when Ariana expects her second child and Zolaya is far away at the shore helping the newcomers.

“Air-ee,” he murmurs, and I’m dimly aware of him setting down Analay. “Look at me. Breathe. In. Out.”
I cling to his furs, my gaze locked to his as we breathe together. I hate that I’m having a panic attack right now, when he needs the healer. I’m going to tell him that, just as soon as I’m no longer ready to pass out.
“Stay with me,” he says in a low voice. “I have waited endless days to see your face again, and I prefer it awake.”
I choke out a laugh, and then suck in a deep breath. I’m breathing. I am. I’ve got this. My mate’s home. I throw my trembling arms around his waist and hug him close.

This One Is For The Anxious Girlies 🫶🏾

💙 Bookish Thoughts
I’ve always loved this one. I’ve never read a book that so accurately represents what it feels like to have severe anxiety. Ruby Dixon did all the anxious girlies justice with this one.

Even before getting to Ariana’s book, I already felt so much compassion for her just from the snippets in other POVs. I instantly related to her.

I’m so, so, so grateful that Ariana ends up with Zolaya. They are perfectly matched. Getting to experience the beginning of their relationship was honestly healing. May we all find our Zolaya 🙏🏽

And may all the Ariana’s of the world remember to give themselves the same grace and compassion they give others. There is so much quiet strength required to manage severe anxiety.
I see you 🫶🏾

I need a Xanax after this one!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤💙
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☹️🙃🥰
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Ariana - She suffers from severe anxiety and relies on medication to help her with attacks. However, when she goes to sleep one night and wakes up later on an Ice Planet, naked and without her medication, she has to learn how to cope. Her thoughts just don’t stop and eventually start to worry her and soon spiral out of control.

The Hero: Zolaya - When he first sees Ariana, he is attracted to her fragility. He flirts shamelessly with her and they become friends. They resonate fairly early and he wants to claim her but can tell that she is not as calm as she tries to appear.

The Story: This book starts out with Zolaya away with some of the other hunters, helping out a new group of people on the planet (probably the Icehome group). So Ariana is at their home with her son Analeigh and the other tribes mates. Though Zolaya is a very steadying force in her life and he helps keep her calm and keep her raging thoughts at bay, so being without him for so long has been very difficult for Ariana.

While Ariana’s mind is going wild, she tries to dampen her anxiety by thinking back on the time that she first arrived on the planet and met Zolaya. I liked how understanding he was with Ariana. How he realized that something in her mind was keeping her from settling down and sleeping. He sees how she tries to act calm even though he could see her mind was spinning and the mind-numbing terror that sometimes results.

Like the rest of this series, this book is told in dual points of view via dual narration. The narrators are Mason Lloyd and Hollie Jackson. I have gotten very used to their narration styles in this series and other Ruby Dixon books and like them both quite a bit. Mason speaks at a great cadence for the alien males and Hollie puts a lot of feeling into her voice.

Ruby Dixon did an awesome job demonstrating how anxiety looks and feels to someone suffering from it, showing how just one negative thought can all the sudden lead to more and more until the person is spiraling and scaring themselves so much to where they can’t stop and look logically at what they are doing. However, I got kind of sick of Ari’s anxiety after a while. Having anxiety is interesting, but I would have liked her to get it under control sooner even if that is unlike reality.

Also, I just have to say that one thing I can’t stand about these books is the fact that the aliens refer to breasts as teats. It really bothers me and makes me think of animals. Just gross.

I know that the anxiety psychological problem is a big one and many people suffers, but here we have a heroine who is constantly anxious… Not very attractive, not very romantic, IMHO…

She’s constantly crying and going mind-avalanche… But what made me roll eyes was the fact that she didn’t want anyone to know about her condition!

Anxiety is not a psychotic condition dangerous to others… It is not a condition that other women there couldn’t understand. It is fairly common one in our society, so I just couldn’t understand why she didn’t want others to know about it.

I think that if the other women and BBBs knew about it, they would help her gladly in any way they could. If I understand Hothnot society enough, it is not a judgmental one, but one where all help each other. They value each person in her/his face value. It is actually a very much nicer society than our own.

I understand that she’s suffering and cannot help herself when a crisis strikes and that, at first, when she’s woken in a strange and frightening place, she didn’t know anything about how her condition would have been acted upon, but many years have passed and she’s still keeping her condition secret.

That’s what have made me mad about this heroine and what made me rate this book 3 stars. And I’m really sorry about that… you all know how much I love my BBBs… :((((

3.5 stars -- well, color me chagrinned. I always kind of rolled my eyes when Ariana was around in the earlier books because she couldn't seem to get it together. To see things from her perspective and to find out that she's been making it work on this ice planet without her anxiety meds... I am so impressed with how Ruby Dixon contextualized Ariana's reactions and created such a sweet love story filled with partner support and acceptance.

I was biased against the heroine before picking up this book but at the same time I believed Ruby could change my mind-set about her. And she did. Spectacularly.
I truly thought Ariana was just some high-maintenance, crying cuckoo but when the issue about her anxiety was introduced as an explanation of her previous behavior, my heart fell for her. Hard.
Although I understand the books can't be never-ending, I was sorry that a few events or even some silly moments of Zolaya and Ariana's past were skipped in order to finish their story in the present—that's why I can't give it a five-star rating.

My love for this particular book is definitely biased, but who cares; it’s my review! This review might get deep pretty quickly but I swear I loved it for more than the relatability!
I have struggled with anxiety my whole life. I mean, the reason I can get through so many books is because I can’t leave the house🤣
And as someone who is finally being taken seriously and is currently on a waiting list for a referral for medication, I cannot imagine having medication and then one day being unable to take it. Whilst this story is obviously not relatable in the ways of being dumped on a random planet in the middle of nowhere, the real-life problems Ariana brings with her are 100% relatable. I loved this couple so much and Zoylaya is the sweetest, kindest Sa-Khui!
I’m starting to get sad about coming to the end of this series; but I’m also so excited to continue reading more Ruby Dixon; Icehome will be the next series of hers I read!

I can’t believe I just read book 17 of this series and I am still. this. obsessed.

Ariana’s story in particular was beautiful. Not only did I LOVE the throw back to the original crew and when they first arrived on Not-Hoth, but I LOVED the very accurate (in my experience anyway) anxiety representation. I loved that Zolaya went above and beyond to understand Ariana’s anxiety and help her with her ‘mind avalanches’ (I love this analogy so much). I loved that he viewed her living with anxiety as a strength and was defensive of her when the others grew impatient with her panic attacks.

Basically, I have a lot of love for this book. And I was considering skipping it! Imagine.

Every girl with an anxiety disorder needs someone like Zolaya in their life. He was so tender and compassionate and just perfect. I relate so much to Ariana with her “mind avalanches”. Anxiety is so complex and multifaceted and there isn’t an off button. They were such a sweet couple. Goals.

Spice: 3.5/5

Triggers: panic attack, abduction (off page), blizzard, grief (side character), mild bullying

4.5 ⭐ Ariana and Zolaya are now one of my favorite IPB couples.

I was NOT looking forward to reading Ariana's story because, in the other books, the other human girls constantly complain about her and her annoying crying. But I'm mad at them now for being judgemental and not really trying to understand. Thank goodness for Zolaya and Marlene. 👭

Summary:

Ariana is one of twelve human women abducted and stranded on an ice planet. Not only is there no way to get back home, but the native aliens who have adopted them into their tribe are primitive, meaning no technology and no medication. That's a major problem for Ariana.

Ariana struggles with anxiety. Without medication, it's challenging for her to remain calm. Since arriving on the ice planet, Ariana's had a few panic attacks and constantly cries, much to the annoyance of the other women. (To be fair, Ariana doesn't tell anyone about her mental health issues, so they just think she's choosing to cry about their situation).

However, one of the alien males sees Ariana's distress and decides to befriend her. Introducing Zolaya, the most perfect alien barbarian of all time. Ariana and Zolaya resonate soon after receiving her khui, which gives Ariana more anxiety. But being the amazing person he is, Zolaya says,

' "I will be patient, Air-ee. I am your friend. Whatever it takes to make you feel comfortable and happy, we will do so."

“Will…will you hold my hand . . . ?”

I want to squeeze her tightly against me for all time.

“My mate, I will never let you go.” '
🥺❤️

Zolaya sees Ariana's struggle and instead of thinking less of her, he recognizes her strength and brave spirit. With the comfort, support, and love of Zolaya, Ariana is able to find ways to work through her 'mind-avalanches' and find happiness in this strange new world.

While the story starts 8 years after the human women arrive on Not-Hoth, it's mostly a flashback that recounts Ariana's first moments after getting a khui and resonating with Zolaya.

My Thoughts:

I feel like I need to apologize to Ariana for judging her character so harshly before reading her story. Living with mental health issues is challenging enough on Earth, but on an alien ice planet? F*ck no. Ruby Dixon, you are amazing for not only addressing the topic of mental health, but doing so in a gentle and loving way.

This story perfectly depicts what it's like to struggle with anxiety. I speak from experience. While I don't struggle as much as Ariana, I definitely relate and understand where she's coming from.

"My brain is constantly telling me that there are things to worry about. It’s like it can’t tell the difference between one small thing that shouldn’t be an issue, and one enormous thing that should be an issue. In my head, all things are enormous problems."

People who struggle with mental health issues are often misunderstood and aren't accepted by everyone in society, so I think how the other women and tribe view Ariana makes a lot of sense. It's unfair but realistic in my opinion.

Zolaya is the perfect partner for someone with anxiety. He's so understanding, patient, gentle, kind and in-tune with Ariana's needs. Zolaya knows Ariana will always have anxiety and instead of trying to change her, he lets her know she is not alone. In fact, he says they are a team and he won't let her mind-avalanches' conquer her. 🥺💗

Overall, Barbarian's Beloved was fantastic and gave me all the feels. I'm so glad Ruby Dixon wrote this story. Hopefully, others will learn something about those who struggle with mental health issues and maybe even learn how to be a more supportive friend or partner.

Ruby Dixon is taking us back in time for her eighteenth instalment in Barbarian’s Beloved right back to the very beginning and tells us Ariana and Zolaya’s story. I admit, that at first I wasn’t that excited, all I really remembered about Ariana was that she cried all the time and I knew nothing about Zolaya. I’m glad I read it anyways, because as usual Dixon got me falling in love with another one of her alien men and changed me perspective on Ariana.

Ariana has an anxiety disorder, which is why she can’t seem to stop crying, her usual way of controlling it, with her meds and routine are shot to pieces after being kidnapped and abandoned on an ice planet. But, it isn’t another one of the human women who try and befriend and help her, it’s Zolaya one of the big scary blue aliens. Only, he isn’t that scary and despite resonating he doesn’t push her for more than friendship.

Barbarian’s Beloved takes past mostly in the past, but in the form of Ariana telling the story of how she and Zolaya met to her son, so it switches time zones so we get a glimpses of the present as well. I loved their story, it was adorable Dixon excels at writing hot blue aliens who are perfect for their human females. Zolaya was just the right amount of patient understanding and hot-for-Ariana creating a sweet romance. As per usual.

Ariana’s mental illness was also interesting aspect for Dixon to tackle. As someone who has a more than passing acquaintance with anxiety I really felt for Ariana. She was isolated and afraid, away for her usual coping mechanisms and Zolaya offered her what she needed. Did he cure her with his amazing blue penis? Of course not and I liked that Dixon showed that anxiety wasn’t some trivial thing that can be “cured” with good sex. But his honest concern and non-judgement sure did make it easier for her.

I think we are going to be getting more books showing the love stories of some of the original women who have mainly been in the background. I can’t wait! This series, even after eighteen books, continues to be on of my favourites.

5 Anxiety stars

The story of Ariana and Zolaya was absolutely perfect.

description

This book is set as a flashback to the beginning. In the beginning, we get a glimpse of how Ariana is doing after eight years on the planet, now pregnant with her second kit. Zolaya is out hunting and has been gone for a long time, which doesn't do well with Ariana's mind. So to calm her brain, she relies on her moments with Zolaya.

People don't understand Ariana. She suffers from severe anxiety and freaks out about the smallest thing. Just her lunch, she gets abducted by aliens and ends up in a cargo ship with other females. When she wakes up, there are big blue aliens on an ice planet where the kidnappers dumped their ship. Her anxiety goes over the roof, and nobody understands why she cries all the time. No-one except one hunky blue alien.

"The smile that blooms across his face is worth it, though. He's looking at me with such approval that I feel like I already conquered one of my demons. "Very brave," he tells me."

Zolaya understands the human female that cowers from everybody and cries a lot. And he wants to console her. When Ariana gets her Khui, they resonate to each other, but because of Ariana's anxiety, Zolaya promises to take it slow, starting as friends.

“My mate, your enthusiasm will leave me so spent I will be bedridden.”

Going back in time to read about when Ariana and Zoraya first got together was not where I wanted to be. This would’ve been a 4 stars if Dixon had released it at the beginning of the series. But right now, I want to move forward and find out what’s happening next. This felt like a hold back from that, and I struggled to finish for that reason.

Original read: 2018
First re-read: 2022 (via audiobook)

I wasn’t really looking forward to re-reading this one. I just wanted to get back to icehome and the dragons lol, but as someone who struggles with anxiety it’s nice to see that represented in a novel. And this wasn’t just casual mentions, Ruby went in with the circling thoughts, self-doubt, embarrassment, shame, panic attacks, etc. It felt really realistic and genuine and honestly I feel like most people would be an Ariana if they got dropped on an ice planet with no way back to earth anxiety or not. I also super loved Zolaya and how endlessly patient and supportive he was. Her anxiety didn’t make her less lovable in his eyes, he was always steadfast in his love for Ariana and thought he got the best, most perfect mate and like 🥹 wow, cute.

5 Anxiety Filled Stars

Arianna bless her heart, I can't even image living where you could not get your hands on the Zoloft of any Anxiety med. Though I have never suffered with Anxiety I have two daughters who do. It is never easy and it never goes away. But the Cootie as the Earthlings say knows all and has paired her with the perfect mate for her.

This was a great read for this collections of stories and if you are as big a fan as I am of those beautiful blue aliens then you will love this story.

This book was a long time coming and I'm thankful Miss Ruby didn't leave us hanging. Ariana and Zolaya are part of the first wave of resonnance, but we had never gotten their story until now.

Mostly I remember Ariana crying a lot and Zolaya having a messy out of control braid.

Here we get all the juicy details, in flashback form.

Ariana is a brunette with big boobies. lol I really like her; she was a collage student with a lot of anxiety and is plagued with panic attacks. I can see how she would freak out about not having her anxiety meds because I've been there. I relate to her in a way because I also suffered from anxiety and panic attacks when my twin sister was diagnosed with stage 3, almost 4 cancer and had 3 organs removed two years ago. So, yes, I would also be freaking out if I didn't have my meds and I was kidnapped by freaking aliens and stranded in a ice block of a planet. Thankfully, I don't have to take anxiety meds anymore and my sister is in remission.
That being said, I can't relate to her symptoms at all. Maybe Ruby Dixon did her research or she suffers from these symptoms but we all suffer from this in different ways. For example, I never cried when I was having panic attacks and I didn't have a panic attack because of certain triggers, it would just spring out of nowhere for no reason at all. My family knew that I was having one when I would have a far off look with a serene, wide eyed face while in reality my heart would be jack-hammering in my chest. Or when I would cover my eyes because of the debilitating vertigo.

I really like how sweet and understanding her warrior is and doesn't take shit from others talking about his mate. He is not experienced but he is a fast study.

Re-read, 2025: yeah, I’m picking this up again because I just need a good ol’ Ruby break to get away from all the stupid angst and miscommunication of other romance books 😌🥰. Gah, I love Zolaya 💕. He has to be the bestest, most calming, and supportive mate 😭🥰. Also, I DEFINITELY am going to need like an Ice Planet Barbarians: Next Gen series or something. I HAVE to see all these kiddos grown up and a mixture between human and Sa-qui 😍.

Oh, also, 5 ✨ now 😌.

2023-ish: Okay, now I KNOW I’ve read this book! I just don’t know why I didn’t log it and I once again have no idea when I actually read it 🙄. Probably sometime in 2021 or 2022.

"Tears are just tears. You can shed them. I do not mind."

I don't know how to properly say that an alien smut book made me feel so seen and really did the anxiety rep so well, enough that it had me smiling and happy . . . and it was also a sweet, understanding romance that wasn't crazy bangarang times right away like the majority of these were?? It's some good stuff here that Dixon writes.

I would have no problem being Ariana’s friend! ❤️ It’s a very enlightening story of someone with crippling anxiety!!!
Zolaya’s initial nickname for Ariana before they even “Resonated” was lovely “little sad bird” 🐦‍⬛🩶🩵

Ohhhhhh, I absolutely LOVE what Marlene calls her mate 😍 “Ma petite chouchou” {My little darling} 😍 BTW, I found using Google Translate helpful for her French words😉

Things I’d miss: Hand lotion. ChapStick. Toilet paper. Washer & Dryer..lol

💙Zolaya is a sweetheart: “I picture mornings together, making love under the furs, then drinking tea and her braiding my mane back before sending me on my way to hunt with a kiss. It is such a pleasant image”
🩵Bonus with her son-Analay, also being a sweetheart, it’ll be interesting to find out if he’s like Rokan with the “knowing” sense? 🧐 Nifty😁

Poor Ariana, (the weepy, whiny human) was an anthropology student at Princeton; smart gal!!
Anxiety 😬 terms: my spinny little brain, panicky minds, 😶‍🌫️🧠😶‍🌫️, “My brain is such an asshole. I start to calm down and it fires a new, frightening scenario at me.”…
That's the thing with anxiety. If something in the routine changes, even something minor, it feels like everything is out of control. The mental ‘Red Alert’ goes off and your brain freaks out.
