He came as the eldest of nine children; his stepfather served as a minister. At 14 years of age in 1938, Baldwin preached at the small fireside Pentecostal church in Harlem. From religion in the early 1940s, he transferred his faith to literature with the still evident impassioned cadences of black churches. From 1948, Baldwin made his home primarily in the south of France but often returned to the United States of America to lecture or to teach.
In his Giovanni's Room, a white American expatriate must come to terms with his homosexuality. In 1957, he began spending half of each year in city of New York.
James Baldwin offered a vital literary voice during the era of civil rights activism in the 1950s and 1960s.
He first partially autobiographically accounted his youth. His influential Nobody Knows My Name and The Fire Next Time informed a large white audience. Another Country talks about gay sexual tensions among intellectuals of New York. Segments of the black nationalist community savaged his gay themes. Eldridge Cleaver of the Black Panthers stated the Baldwin displayed an "agonizing, total hatred of blacks." People produced Blues for Mister Charlie , play of Baldwin, in 1964. Huey Newton, co-founder of the Black Panther Party, defended Baldwin.
Going to Meet the Man and Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone provided powerful descriptions. He as an openly gay man increasingly in condemned discrimination against lesbian persons.
From stomach cancer, Baldwin died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. People buried his body at the Ferncliff cemetery in Hartsdale near city of New York.

The happiness of someone you love proves that life is possible. Your own horrors, whatever they may be, must simply await your return from the celebration - there can be no question of your taking them with you. And there they sit, indeed, in your room, when you return, looking baleful and neglected, and you realize that some horrors need you far more than you need them, and, mercilessly, you begin to clean house.
If Baldwin is criticized for writing fiction that reveals too much of the private self, then in inner conflict on page I revel. This is ponder and self-doubt and characters who find resolutions in the midst of a sweeping novel that spans two continents and three decades of war, love, and friendship.

This novel of brotherhood and angst is lyrical eloquence told from the reflections of an older brother, Hall, who has just received the news of his younger brother's death. They shared a personal and business bond that makes the reader feel as close to Arthur as Hall was. The words are pained, introspective, and achingly beautiful. As usual, Baldwin occasionally includes pages of dialogue that add immediacy and realism. Like Hemingway, his characters turn up elbows often: Scotch, Bourbon, Beer, you name it. They live in New York City and travel to London and Paris (like Baldwin), but this novel edges a bit to the South, where young singers, black men, realize just how much racism will change their lives forever.
They are artists, gospel singers. They are young males figuring out sexuality. They are minors coming of age. They are adults in love, adults in pain, adults who depend on substances, adults who suffer loss and heartache, and cruelty. Love is the bud of every flowered mini plot. Baldwin is bold and intense in these pages, as usual, never mincing words. It is as if this book is a culmination of his works, and technically it is, but artistically, it embodies all of his books and still leaves room for more exploration of Baldwin. This one is my favorite. I know that some find him a difficult read because of how he embeds homosexuality and race, but these are themes occurring through the lenses he uses as a writer; one immediately senses that these were themes instinctive and crucial to him as a writer, themes that drove him from his homeland and haunted his soul. Embracing these themes is an insanely equipped narrative structure with scenes strung together like the keyboard on a piano. And all I could say as I read was: Write on my brother, right on.

i read this book on the train and would often weep audibly while reading. all the commuters would stare and crane their necks to see what i was reading-- once an older lady who was sitting next to me patted my arm a bit while tears were rolling down my face.
building community on the train through such honest beauty in the form of literature--breathtaking.
this definitely goes on my favorite books ever shelf.
quite possibly one of the best books that i've ever read.

Μα τι ωραίο που ήταν!!
Με αυτό το δεύτερο βιβλίο του που διαβάζω νομίζω πως θα βάλω τον James Baldwin στους αγαπημένους!
Ο Χαλ Μοντάνα δυο χρόνια μετά το θάνατο του αγαπημένου του αδερφού, Άρθουρ, αποφασίζει να σπάσει τη σιωπή του και να μιλήσει γι’ αυτόν. Για τη σχέση του Άρθουρ μαζί του, για τη σχέση του με τους φίλους του, για τα γκόσπελ που τραγουδούσε στις εκκλησίες, για τα ταξίδια του και για το πώς κατέληξε να γίνει ο διάσημος “Αυτοκράτορας της σόουλ”. Μα κυρίως για το πόσο πολύ αγαπούσε τον αδερφό του.
Η γραφή του υπέροχη!
Το βιβλίο χωρίζεται σε 5 μέρη και δεν έχει καθόλου κεφάλαια κάτι που με είχε εκνευρίσει πριν το ξεκινήσω. Το ξεκίνησα και δεν με ένοιαζε. Δεν με ένοιαζε γιατί κυλούσε τόσο ωραία που ειλικρινά δεν έψαχνα σημείο να σταματήσω!
Ο James Baldwin μέσω της αφήγησης της ιστορίας της ζωής του Άρθουρ και των ταραγμένων δεκαετιών (’40, ’50, ’60) που διαδραματίζεται μιλάει για τις ανθρώπινες σχέσεις. Σχέσεις οικογενειακές, αδελφικές, φιλικές, ερωτικές και σχέσεις μεταξύ ανθρώπων και Θεού. Ο Χαλ αφηγείται ιστορίες αγάπης, πάθους, αφοσίωσης και πίστης. Ιστορίες βίας, κακοποίησης, φόβου, πόνου, απώλειας, μίσους και οργής. Χαρακτήρες που αναζητούν τον εαυτό τους και τη θέση τους στον κόσμο. Αμφισβητούν την πίστη τους, ενηλικιώνονται πριν την ώρα τους, τραγουδούν για την αγάπη και κάνουν ότι μπορούν για να ζήσουν.
Συμμετέχοντας ενεργά και ο ίδιος ο Baldwin στο κίνημα για τα πολιτικά δικαιώματα των μαύρων μιλάει για τον ρατσισμό αλλά και για την ομοφυλοφιλία ένα θέμα ταμπού για εκείνη την περίοδο. Μιλάει για το τι σημαίνει να είσαι μαύρος στην Αμερική του προηγούμενου αιώνα, τι σημαίνει να είσαι ομοφυλόφιλος μαύρος, για τον φόβο, τον επικίνδυνο αμερικάνικο νότο, τους περιορισμούς, τις αμφιβολίες, τις απαγορεύσεις και τις αδικίες.
Πολλά κομμάτια που αναφέρονται σε αυτά τα θέματα δυστυχώς είναι πολύ επίκαιρα και υπάρχει ανάγκη ακόμη και σήμερα να λέγονται και να συζητιούνται.
Πραγματικά πολύ δυνατό βιβλίο με υπέροχη -υ π έ ρ ο χ η- γραφή που καταφέρνει με πολύ ισορροπημένο τρόπο να μιλά για το μίσος και ταυτόχρονα για την αγάπη. Είναι ένα βιβλίο γεμάτο συναισθήματα, χωρίς όμως ποτέ να καταφεύγει σε μελοδραματισμούς και που παρά το μέγεθος του, εγώ ήθελα κι άλλο!

Αν δεν διένυα από τις δυσκολότερες περιόδους, θα σας μίλαγα λεπτομερώς για αυτό το εξαιρετικό βιβλίο. Κρατήστε ότι προσεγγίζει μοναδικά θέματα όχι μόνο φυλετικά αλλά σεξουαλικά, οικογενειακά, φιλικά και κακοποίησης χωρίς να τα κάνει μαντάρα ή να καταλήγεί μελό. Ξεκίνησα την χρονιά μου με τον Baldwin και νομίζω ότι μου έκανε καλό ποδαρικό.

Ένα αμερικανικό αριστούργημα!
Ήρθα σε επαφή με το έργο του Baldwin το 2016 μέσω του ντοκιμαντέρ του Raoul Peck I am not your negro που βασίστηκε στα κείμενά του. Αυτό ήταν η αφορμή να ψάξω προσωπικά για την ιστορία και τους αγώνες της αφροαμερικανικής κοινότητας και να έρθω σε επαφή με πολλά παρόμοια έργα και ταινίες, που καλώς ή κακώς απέκτησαν δημοφιλία τα χρόνια της προεδρίας του Ομπάμα. Έκτοτε αναζήτησα και δικά του κείμενα, τα οποία όμως ήταν εξαντλημένα στις ελληνικές εκδόσεις. Έτσι ο καιρός πέρασε, αμέλησα να επισκεφτώ και την δανειστική βιβλιοθήκη ώστε να τα αναζητήσω και τελικά οι εκδόσεις Πόλις αποφάσισαν να κυκλοφορήσουν μέρος της εργογραφίας του ξεκινώντας από το τελευταίο του μυθιστόρημα.
Ομολογουμένως είναι μια ιστορία που δεν μπορεί να ταυτιστεί ο έλληνας αναγνώστης, λόγω βιωμάτων και καταβολών που είναι άγνωστα στη χώρα μας. Κυριαρχεί μια εντελώς διαφορετική κουλτούρα. Η ιστορία αφορά τις παράλληλες ζωές νέων αφροαμερικάνων, οι οποίοι συνδέονται έντονα με τη θρησκεία και κινούνται στους χώρους των ομάδων χορωδιών και τραγουδιστών γκόσπελ. Μέσα από μια φλύαρη, αλλά γεμάτη ζωντάνια και εικόνες, αφήγηση μας παρουσιάζονται ζωές ανθρώπων που δεν κυνηγούν το αμερικάνικο όνειρο, αλλά διεκδικούν μια θέση στην κοινωνία ως ισότιμα μέλη. Η ιστορία διασχίζει τα κρίσιμα χρόνια της δεκαετίας του ’50 και του ’60, στα οποία η αφροαμερικανική κοινότητα ζούσε σε αναβρασμό. Με φόντο όλα τα παραπάνω, μέσα από τη ζωή δύο αδερφών και του περίγυρού τους μαθαίνουμε για την πίστη (θρησκευτική ή όχι), την ανθρώπινη αξιοπρέπεια και την αγάπη.
Μου θύμισε πάρα πολύ τη γραφή του Philip Roth. Καθώς είναι το τελευταίο έργο του Baldwin καταλαβαίνει κανείς ότι έβαλε όλη τη μαεστρία του, τόσο σε επίπεδο γραφής όσο και θεματολογίας, για να συμπεριλάβει όλα όσα ένιωθε, έζησε και ήθελε να μοιραστεί με το κοινό. Θα έλεγα ότι είναι μια σπουδαία εξομολόγηση, που αν και κάποιες φορές με κούρασε, δεν μπορώ να μην αναγνωρίσω τον μεγάλο ανθρωπισμό αυτού του έργου. Σίγουρα θα προσπαθήσω να διαβάσω ό,τι υπάρχει από την πένα του.

[4.5] Baldwin writes with blazing brilliance about two families during the Civil Rights era of the 1960s. The book has a circular structure - it starts with the end, with Arthur's death, and then moves back in time until it reaches his death again. This confusing start made it hard to connect to and I almost gave up after the first few chapters. I'm so glad I didn't! At the end of the book, I did return to the beginning and re-read several chapters - which I needed to complete my experience.
There are several threads revolving around Hall and his younger brother Arthur, and Julia and her younger brother Jimmy and their relationships with each other. Baldwin writes searingly about the daily racism his characters experience - deadly in the South (where a friend can easily be murdered while going to the toilet) and suffocating everywhere. The pages are filled with rage, sorrow, lust and so much love. Love between brother and brother, between lovers, between brother and sister, between husband and wife. The deep current of love is what moved me most about this novel and made it feel both hopeful and profound.

God damn. James Baldwin's novels are intense, and this is the best I've read. He writes so sharply, almost viciously, about the inner thoughts and experiences of his characters--in this case, a Black family in New York in the 1940s-60s. He is unsparing about the state of racial, sexual, and religious dynamics in the US, and it makes me wonder how much as really changed on the larger level. The book moved me to tears with its tender, tough, intimate, and devastating details of human lives. The story simultaneously describes catastrophic events on a large scale, as well as tiny details and fluctuations of mood and experience that are somehow equally as catastrophic. Ooh-wee, I finally finished this. And that means that I’ve now completed every novel in Baldwin’s bibliography…and what a fkn firecracker to end with. This novel gave me whiplash. It’s so spirited and operatic.
What is love? And what lengths will we go to keep it? We explore all-consuming love, suffocating love, respectful love, unrequited love, the push and pull of love, turning your back on love, and everything that comes in between.
Initially, I paused this book because I had other reading commitments, but once I got back into it, I devoured it with such ferocity. This book is fkn monster, engulfing my mind, body, and spirit.

«Το κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ»
Ογκώδες, αλλά ευκολοδιάβαστο! Κυλάει πολύ γρήγορα αν μπεις στο ρυθμό του.
Βιβλίο στο οποίο ο συγγραφέας θίγει πολλά θέματα- φυλετικά,ρατσιστικά, σεξουαλικού προσανατολισμού, σεξουαλικές προτιμήσεις, ενδοοικογενειακή βία, φιλία, ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα- όχι για να σοκάρει, προφανώς αλλά για να γνωστοποιήσει και να αφυπνίσει τον κόσμο.
Σίγουρα είναι σκληρό βιβλίο. Με περιγραφές ωμές που όμως δε σοκάρουν τον αναγνώστη… τον κάνουν να θλιβεται , να οργίζεται, άλλες φορές να παραδέχεται την υπόστασή του…άλλες να ντρέπεται για τα θέλω του… Σε όποια ομάδα κ αν ανήκεις, θα ταυτιστείς με κάποιον από τους ήρωες και αν δεν ταυτιστείς, σίγουρα θα βρεις ένα μικρό κοινό σημείο.
Εικόνες που αντικατοπτρίζουν την κοινωνία του τότε, την κοινωνία του σήμερα.
Αντιλήψεις που δε θα εκλείψουν όσα χρόνια κ αν περάσουν.
Στάσεις ζωής που θα συναντούμε πάντα!

Just Above My Head, Baldwin’s final novel, bookends nicely with his debut novel, Go Tell It On the Mountain. Dysfunctional families, problematic fathers, the disruptive power of the Black church, racism, and sexuality all figure prominently in both. And like the earlier novel, Just Above My Head is told looking backward, as the narrator Hal Montana, contemplating the life of his dead brother, looks back over thirty years of their lives, from childhood onward. But while Go Tell It On the Mountain was brilliant with harsh agony, the overwhelming feeling in Just Above My Head is a gently sad bittersweetness.
This is my favorite of Baldwin’s novels, because he contrasted the ugly dysfunction that tore apart the Miller family with the supportive, loving atmosphere within the family of brothers Hal and Arthur Montana. He contrasted the hatefulness of Jim Crow and murderous racism with the courage and dedication of young people who risked their lives going South to combat it. And while the book is full of ugly racism, abuse, incest, even murder — all this is offset by genuine love and affection of all sorts — parental love, brotherly love, the love of friend for friend and lover for lover. And while love didn’t negate these terrible things, it mitigated them, and gave reason and purpose to go on.
Baldwin used a storytelling device where he tells you up front most of the terrible things that will happen in the novel. The narrator is looking back, telling the story of his dead brother, Arthur Montana, who was a celebrity Gospel and Soul singer. This device creates the overwhelming bittersweetness of the novel, because even as we are reading about triumphs and joys, we know what sadness lies ahead.
Just Above My Head is the work of a mature Baldwin, older, sadder, wiser, but still unbowed, unbroken, and tempered by love.

Από τον όγκο του βιβλίου και μόνο γίνεται αντιληπτό ότι ο Μπόλντουιν ήθελε (σ' αυτό που έμελλε να είναι το τελευταίο λογοτεχνικό έργο του) να συνθέσει ένα magnum opus, στο οποίο θα συγκέντρωνε και θα εμβάθυνε σε όλες τις θεματικές που τον απασχόλησαν τα προηγούμενα χρόνια: ο θεσμικός ρατσισμός στις ΗΠΑ, όπως βιώνεται από την κοινότητα των μαύρων, η πολιτική ανυπακοή και η ειρηνική διαμαρτυρία, όπως θεμελιώθηκαν από τον Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κινγκ, η διπλή και ανέστια μοναξιά των μαύρων ομοφυλόφιλων, όπως την έζησε ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας, ακόμα και στη θεωρητικά πιο φιλελεύθερη Ευρώπη (βλ. Το δωμάτιο του Τζιοβάνι). Το τελικό αποτέλεσμα είναι σίγουρα πληθωρικό, σε σημεία αγγίζει τη φλυαρία και την υπερανάλυση, αλλά είναι τόσο βαθιά η γνώση του συγγραφέα για το αντικείμενό του, τόσο διεισδυτική η εμβρίθεια της σκέψης του και κυρίως τόσο μεγάλη η αγάπη του για τους ήρωές του, που δεν μπορείς παρά να μείνεις στο τέλος συγκλονισμένος από την ομορφιά και την εκφραστική δύναμη πολλών αποσπασμάτων (κυρίως των ερωτικών σκηνών) και συγκινημένος από τη δύναμη των λέξεων και των συναισθημάτων που αναβλύζουν από τις σελίδες.

I have grown to love James Baldwin’s writing, having read both Giovanni’s Room and Go Tell it on the Mountain. Just Above My Head is no exception and I loved every page of this complex and enduring narrative as told through the words of Hall Montana. The carefully chosen words for the title, Just Above My Head, gives me the impression of that which is just out of reach, yearning, stretching for that which is illusive yet tangible and slowly coming into focus. Baldwin’s narrative is like that as he documents a tale of a black extended family coming to terms with itself, navigating the tumultuous waters of ‘desegregation’ (there’s something about that term I find abhorrent), sexuality, incest, faith, religion, brotherhood, friendship.
Just Above My Head opens with the death of Arthur Montana, famed singer and one of the original ‘Trumpets of Zion’ quartet. Arthur’s death occurs in a London pub, found at the bottom of a set of stairs, and Baldwin is sketchy on all the details surrounding this. His brother Hall is heartbroken and sets off on a long and winding narrative detailing so much of his and Arthur’s experiences, family background, friends, relationships, and in doing so, processes much of this journey and his relationship with Arthur for the reader.
Arthur and Hall are not the only pivotal characters in the novel. Family friends, Joel and Amy and parents, Florence and Paul. Joel and Amy’s children Julia and Jimmy are almost parallel characters alongside Hall and Arthur with Julia and Hall enduring an intense relationship and Arthur and Jimmy eventually becoming lovers and partners. As a young person, Julia is a ‘child preacher’ and is elevated to a position in her family far beyond her years which eventually becomes an undoing, exposing hypocrisy, incestuous secrets and ultimately gives way to her mother’s death and propels Julia onto a pathway to find herself.
In fact, everyone in the book is on that pathway - finding themselves in a space of unfolding identity, vocation and belief. All set against the backdrop of the civil rights movement of the 50s and 60s.. a time when blackness was being re-understood in a deeply divided and prejudiced white America. As Arthur processes towards the end of the book, colour, no longer perceived through "the optic of power and guilt," resolves into many individual shades - there is no longer simply black and white for him, colours which are laden with so much preconditioned meaning, but shade upon shade making up an entire kaleidoscope.
Just Above My Head is a starkly serious, poignant and beautiful narrative of life told in Baldwin’s inimitable style, full of depth and emotion. I loved every word.

It was a song, a poem, an enterprise of faith. I am too attached to this book, the mechanics of Baldwin's writing, and its content to be very objective in reviewing it.
Suffice it to say, if you have no knowledge of traditional gospel music, you will miss the grace of this text. As a music head & a girl grow'd up in the Chu'ch, this hit home....but beyond that...aaahhh!

Baldwin examines the way to live:
With hope or without. This is an epic tragedy because Baldwin presents both hope, dreams, wishes for the future and at the same time brings us down to the ground with the truths, the truths behind the civil rights battle, , the truths of daily life, the truth of life and death. Tragic because the American black world is a world of deep violent injustice with no re-course, so in addition to the usual tragedy of life, they have this added dark burden. Hope because it is either hope for better, continue step after step, or stop and die. Which is the way forward? He examines these points through his characters, reminding us that the basic truth of life, death comes to all black or white and maybe Baldwin’s beautiful intimate moments is him saying, grab the moment, live the moment because the end will come anyway.
With religion or without - through his stories Baldwin presents religion as either a dress, a sanctified dress to be put on to be ‘seen’, to attain grace through membership of a group, where the outer appearance of piousness counts. Or religion as a ‘lived’ in dress, put on daily, shown through our daily love and interactions with each other. I do not get the feeling that he has taken a definite decision whether Christian beliefs have helped the Black man in America. I do get the feeling that his way is more the way of choosing a religion that helps us live together, to survive, to continue, rather than a religion which demands, enslaves and dictates.
I do not think that he gives a definite answer of what to do, how to live, but through his examination we can continue to see, ask, delve into the why and the how of our lives. Makes me appreciate my moments of happiness more, makes me want to grab them and hold them because these precious moments leave and we might not get them again.
This long book is filled with lots of stories tied in with Baldwin’s musings, philosophy. The stories flowed, the philosophy got disjointed stuck in between the stories. The start and the overall tone cast a shadow over the book. The stories themselves reminded me of the compact direct punches of Giovanni’s Room and If Beale Street Could Talk, my favourite Baldwins.

Πόσο δύσκολο είναι να είσαι έγχρωμος, ομοφυλόφιλος και να ζεις στην Αμερική του μίσους, του ρατσισμού και των φυλετικών διακρίσεων του 1960; O Τζέιμς Μπόλντουιν ήταν και τα δύο αλλά δεν ήταν μόνο αυτά. Ήταν ένας συγγραφέας με σπάνιο συγγραφικό ταλέντο, που ήξερε να βρίσκει τις κατάλληλες λέξεις και να τις τοποθετεί εκεί που πρέπει και όταν πρέπει, πλάθοντας χαρακτήρες που μέσα σε 5 σελίδες νομίζεις ότι είναι οι ένοικοι της πολυκατοικίας σου. Ο Μπόλντουιν είχε το χάρισμα να αφηγείται και να περιγράφει με ακρίβεια χωρίς να κουράζει, οδηγώντας τον αναγνώστη ανάμεσα σε συναισθήματα, μουσική και στίχους τραγουδιών και χτίζοντας ένα κείμενο που θα το χαρακτήριζα αναγνωστικό σταθμό.
Έχω τη συνήθεια, όταν επισκέπτομαι ένα βιβλιοπωλείο, να ζητάω από τον ιδιοκτήτη του να μου προτείνει κάποια βιβλία, τα οποία ο ίδιος θεωρεί σημαντικά. Αυτό το κάνω για να ανακαλύπτω καινούργια και άγνωστα προς εμένα αναγνώσματα από ανθρώπους που διαβάζουν πολύ. Το καλοκαίρι του 2020 επισκέφτηκα τα Χανιά και φυσικά τις πρώτες ημέρες επισκέφτηκα το διάσημο πλέον βιβλιοπωλείο, που όλοι μας θαυμάζουμε και ακολουθούμε στο Facebook. Μετά από μια υπέροχη κουβέντα με την ιδιοκτήτρια, της ζήτησα να επιλέξει 5 βιβλία για τις καλοκαιρινές μου διακοπές. Σκέφτηκε αρκετά, επέλεξε όντως 5 βιβλία, αλλά λίγο πριν φτάσω στο ταμείο την ακούω να λέει, «ωπ, κάτι ξέχασα!» Επέστρεψε στα ράφια και γύρισε πίσω κρατώντας Το κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ. Μου το έδωσε λέγοντας «δεν ξέρω ποιο βιβλίο θα αφήσεις από τα άλλα, αλλά αυτό πρέπει να το πάρεις…». Το βιβλίο δεν το γνώριζα και ούτε είχα ακούσει κάτι για αυτό. Τελειώνοντας τις τελευταίες σελίδες και όντας ευγνώμων για την επιλογή της ιδιοκτήτριας, απόρησα που δεν είχα ακούσει ποτέ κάτι για αυτό.
Το κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ μας ταξιδεύει στη μουσική (τζαζ και γκόσπελ) και στον έρωτα μεταξύ ετερόφυλων και ομόφυλων ζευγαριών, στην φιλία , την αδερφική αγάπη, έχοντας σαν αντίπαλους τις φυλετικές διακρίσεις, την ομοφοβία, τη βία, τον ρατσισμό, αλλά και την αγωνία εύρεσης σεξουαλικής ταυτότητας. Υπάρχουν στιγμές που το βιβλίο γίνεται πολύ σκληρό περιγράφοντας πράξεις βίας της Κου-Κλουξ-Κλαν και σεξουαλικές κακοποιήσεις, αλλά μέσα στις σελίδες του θα βρείτε και τις πιο όμορφες περιγραφές της σεξουαλικής πράξης που έχω διαβάσει.
Το κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ το συνιστώ σε όλους γιατί δεν είναι απλά ένα βιβλίο. Είναι βιβλίο αναφοράς. Μια αναγνωστική τρύπα που μπαίνεις μέσα του και χάνεσαι. Ένα βιβλίο που, όταν το διαβάσεις, δεν είσαι πια ο ίδιος.

Σκέφτηκε αρκετά, επέλεξε όντως 5 βιβλία, αλλά λίγο πριν φτάσω στο ταμείο την ακούω να λέει, «ωπ, κάτι ξέχασα!» Επέστρεψε στα ράφια και γύρισε πίσω κρατώντας Το κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ. Μου το έδωσε λέγοντας «δεν ξέρω ποιο βιβλίο θα αφήσεις από τα άλλα, αλλά αυτό πρέπει να το πάρεις…». Το βιβλίο δεν το γνώριζα και ούτε είχα ακούσει κάτι για αυτό. Τελειώνοντας τις τελευταίες σελίδες και όντας ευγνώμων για την επιλογή της ιδιοκτήτριας, απόρησα που δεν είχα ακούσει ποτέ κάτι για αυτό.
Το κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ μας ταξιδεύει στη μουσική (τζαζ και γκόσπελ) και στον έρωτα μεταξύ ετερόφυλων και ομόφυλων ζευγαριών, στην φιλία , την αδερφική αγάπη, έχοντας σαν αντίπαλους τις φυλετικές διακρίσεις, την ομοφοβία, τη βία, τον ρατσισμό, αλλά και την αγωνία εύρεσης σεξουαλικής ταυτότητας. Υπάρχουν στιγμές που το βιβλίο γίνεται πολύ σκληρό περιγράφοντας πράξεις βίας της Κου-Κλουξ-Κλαν και σεξουαλικές κακοποιήσεις, αλλά μέσα στις σελίδες του θα βρείτε και τις πιο όμορφες περιγραφές της σεξουαλικής πράξης που έχω διαβάσει.
Το κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ το συνιστώ σε όλους γιατί δεν είναι απλά ένα βιβλίο. Είναι βιβλίο αναφοράς. Μια αναγνωστική τρύπα που μπαίνεις μέσα του και χάνεσαι. Ένα βιβλίο που, όταν το διαβάσεις, δεν είσαι πια ο ίδιος.

Ο Χαλ, αδερφός του τραγουδιστή Άρθουρ Μοντάνα, σπάει τη σιωπή του κι αποφασίζει να διηγηθεί την ιστορία του. Όμως, αυτό που ξεκινά σαν αφήγηση της ζωής του Άρθουρ, τελικά μετατρέπεται σε κάτι πολύ μεγαλύτερο.
Είναι η ιστορία μιας ολόκληρης γενιάς Αμερικανών. Αμερικανών που για πολλά χρόνια ήταν πολίτες Β κατηγορίας. Πολίτες αναλώσιμους που το κράτος εκμεταλλεύτηκε την ανάγκη τους να αποδείξουν ότι ανήκουν, στέλνοντάς τους να υπερασπιστούν τις φιλοδοξίες της χώρας τους, όταν την ίδια στιγμή δεν μπορούσαν να συγχρωτιστουν μαζί τους.
Η αγάπη του Άρθουρ για τη θρησκεία και η έκφραση της μέσω των τραγουδιών γκόσπελ, αντικατοπτρίζει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι κοινότητες των μαύρων της Αμερικής, προσπάθησαν να αντισταθούν στον φυλετικό διαχωρισμό.
Η ιστορία του Χαλ, απεικονίζει όλες τις φοβίες και τα στερεότυπα που ταλανίζουν εκείνη την εποχή κι ένα από αυτά είναι κι η αποδοχή της σεξουαλικής τους ταυτότητας.
Το θέμα του βιβλίου είναι βαρύ και αν και σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις οι περιγραφές του συγγραφέα είναι ωμές, δεν σου προκαλούν δυσφορία αλλά θλίψη.
Η γραφή του είναι λυρική ως ποιητική θα έλεγα και παρόλο τον όγκο του, η ανάγνωσή του ρέει αβίαστα!.

I wonder, more and more, about what we call memory. The burden - the role - of memory is to clarify the event, to make it useful, even, to make it bearable. But memory is, also, what the imagination makes, or has made, of the event, and, the more dreadful the event, the more likely it is that the memory will distort, or efface it. It is, thus, perfectly possible - indeed, it is common - to act on the genuine results of the event, at the same time that the memory manufactures quite another one, an event totally unrelated to the visible and uncontrollable effects in one's life. This may be why we appear to learn absolutely nothing from experience, or may, in other words, account for our incoherence: memory does not require that we reconstitute the event, but that we justify it.

His semi-autobiographical novel Go tell it on the Mountain, the beautifully written and symbolic Giovanni’s Room, and his collection of essays in Notes of a Native Son and The Fire Next Time provided a highly personal looks into race relations, homosexuality, and existential questions of identity.
Written in 1979, Just Above My Head marks Baldwin’s second to last novel. Like his seminal works, this novel deals with issues of race, homosexuality, and identity. I think I would render the novel to merely a shadow of its former self if I attempted to describe the intricate plot line of the four books inside. Grief, incest, civil rights, religion, faith, identity, race relations, gospel and jazz culture, the rise from poverty to excess, family relations, and most important love all share a spotlight in Baldwin’s work. Just Above My Head offers a veritable buffet of literary motifs and metaphors. In the end, despite Baldwin’s personal condemnation of the Christianity, I believe he still retains, by the end of the novel, a deep hope that some, to borrow of a phrase from the late Hunter S. Thompson, being is tending the light at the end of the tunnel. Our fates, our identity, our deep and often painful relations between people are guided by an even greater, mysterious force just above our heads. I enjoyed this work, though I must say it is a time investment. To milk the full experience from the bosom of this book, does require dedication.
Technically speaking the book, to me, is like poetry. I admire Baldwin’s style of writing. He combines literary styles noted from the Harlem Renaissance, modernist techniques, and even blues-poetry. His samples of Gospel songs add to the metaphors present in the book and his diversity of wordplay is inspiring sometimes. I’ve always said Baldwin, like Dostoevsky, Shakespeare and Hunter S. Thompson are some of the most quotable writers that ever existed. Just Above My Head does not refute this claim. Baldwin, in true literary fashion, crushes the reader with emotion and style.

I read Just Above My Head the week it came out--I'd just moved to Mississippi and was in a major transition in my life. I've read it often sense, and thought of it very often. Re-reading it thirty-five years later in very different geographical, social, political, psychological and political contexts, it remains as powerful as it was the first time. It's nice to see the large number of five star ratings on Goodreads since the critics, both at the time and now, have never given it the recognition it deserves. Much of that's the result of Baldwin's radically *black* and musical and morally uncompromising style. You can't reduce it to a formal masterpiece (as you can with Go Tell It On the Mountain) or a political statement (like some managed to do with The Fire Next Time or Another Country). Just Above My Head demands that we look seriously in our mirrors and at the many disasters visited upon the world with our active or passive acquiescence. I've been teaching it in a mixed Afro-American Studies/English class and the primary response from the (absolutely first-rate) group of students has been "wow, this feels absolutely contemporary." Amen.

I officially finished my fourth Baldwin and what a journey it was. His commentary of sexuality, grief, race, religion, family & friendship was at the foreground in this journey from New York to Paris to Southern USA to London. His writing is blunt and honest and true and singular. Forever one of my favourite authors.

I finished it, finally! To keep things short: I hated this book.
I was bored from beginning till end. There were parts that I could have enjoyed, like Julia and her youth or Hall's trip to Korea, but Baldwin decided to focus on other things. Baldwin mentions some shocking things, like Julia and her father, but never really handles the aftermath of it. That felt like an easy and cheap way to shock readers. Same thing with Hall and his trip to Korea during the war. Baldwin decided that the book would be about racism and that was it. All the other shocking things that happened in this book were just used to traumatise the characters and make them come closer. I was not impressed by this at all. If he had dived more into it and made it more a part of the story this book would have gotten at least 2 stars from me.
Another thing that really didn't work for me were the unnecessary bits. There were two types:
- The endless mentions of (sweaty) balls and dicks and butt holes. I really don't see how this add to the story and, as someone who thinks very visually, it was very off putting.
- The weird philosophical parts where Baldwin just spews and spews about some subject for pages and pages until you suddenly get back to the story and you have no clue what just happened or where you were before he started doing that.
Both of these things really ruined the reading pace for me.
Considering the high average rating for this book, I guess it just was not for me, other people seem to enjoy it more than I did.

something about this book moved me so deeply. and it started in the very beginning of the book, when the main character is hit so hard by grief. i cry and cry when i read this.
i think that i love baldwin's books about the strength of family the best--ones that follow queer families and chosen families and birth families through long, complicated relationships, and historical events, and coping with tremendous trauma and loss, and loving one another to various degrees of effectiveness through time. i like the lack heroic characters--how they all fail sometimes, and then keep moving on and trying to figure things out and make things work. i like how the relationships seem to evolve through time, how a lover can cease to be a lover and become a best friend who is also family. how baldwin can tell the story of the same person falling in love multiple times, without diminishing the intensity of any of those falls or getting comparative.
it's the closest thing i can find in literature to a representation of my own experience & view of family. everyone i love, i try to get them to read this book.

5 easy damn stars!! James Baldwin was a pen god!! This man wrote his ass off!! The way he built his characters, they feel raw, honest and real. The bars and restaurants give sounds, ambiance and scents of food. The love and relationships are real, hot, honest and heartbreaking all at the same time. The race relations are expounded on in the most honest and unapologetic way ever. Baldwin NEVER holds back in ANY area of human nature in how we love, live, hurt and hate. I highlight recommend all his works. He would definitely be one of the people I would have at that imaginary dinner party folk always ask whom you would invite dead or alive.

Η ψυχή θέλει να εξαγνιστεί, όπως το σώμα από την βροχή.
Το κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ είναι ένα βιβλίο κατάθεσης ψυχής, που σε ταξιδεύει στα μέσα του 20ου αιώνα σε μία εποχή που συμβαίνουν έντονες πολιτικές αλλαγές για του μαύρους. Αλήθεια ποια είναι η πρώτη σας σκέψη όταν ακούτε την φράση Μαύρος Αμερικάνος? Είμαι σίγουρη ότι σκέφτεστε διαφορετικά πράγματα και το προσεγγίζεται από διαφορετική οπτική γωνία ο καθένας. Μπορώ να σας πω ότι οι σκέψεις μου συμπίπτουν με το James Baldwin γιατί έχω ασχοληθεί πολύ με αυτό το θέμα από μικρή ,όταν με είχε συγκλονίσει η σειρά Βόριοι και Νότιοι τότε και δεν θα ξεχάσω ποτέ την ερωτική σκηνή της Κίρστι Άλει αν δεν κάνω λάθος , γιατί η μνήμη μου είναι ομιχλώδης με έναν μαύρο .
Όλοι ξέρουν πόσο επικίνδυνα παιχνίδια παίζει η μνήμη, πόσο ύπουλος είναι ο ρόλος της στη ζωή ενός ανθρώπου.
Η ιστορία που θα διαβάσετε σε αυτό το βιβλίο είναι ένα τραγούδι αγάπης του Χάλ για τον αδερφό του, και ταυτόχρονα ένα τραγούδι για τον θάνατο. Η αδερφική αγάπη είναι πολύ έντονη και συνήθως ο μεγάλος αδερφός προστατεύει τον μικρότερο, ο οποίος ακολουθεί ως πρότυπο τον μεγαλύτερο. Με ψυχή και φωνή τρεμάμενη περιγράφει ο Χάλ την ιστορία, οι σκέψεις του και τα συναισθήματα του είναι τόσο έντονα που σε παρασέρνει και εσένα μέσα στην πλοκή. Έτσι έρχεσαι αντιμέτωπος με προσωπικές, κοινωνικές, οικογενειακές συγκρούσεις και με τις ολέθριες συνέπειες της απώλειας. Διαβάζοντας το βιβλίο θα σου κάνει εντύπωση και το γεγονός ότι υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που έχουν πεθάνει πριν τους πάνε στο νεκροταφείο.
Ο λευκός δεν θα μπορούσε να μας αγγίξει αν είχαμε μάθει να αγαπάμε ο ένας τον άλλον.
Στο κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ ,σε αυτό το συγκλονιστικό για εμένα μυθιστόρημα, ο Baldwin με φόντο το κίνημα για τα πολιτικά δικαιώματα των μαύρων, που συντάραξε της ΗΠΑ την δεκαετία του 60, αφηγείται με έναν ιδιαίτερο τρόπο την δυναμική των φυλετικών και σεξουαλικών σχέσεων πάνω στον άνθρωπο και πόσο σημαντικό είναι αυτό για να παραμείνει κάποιος άνθρωπος. Αυτό που μου άρεσε πιο πολύ είναι η απλή, μεστή γραφή του για να περιγράψει όλα αυτά σε ένα βιβλίο 757 σελίδων, σε συνδυασμό με ωμές περιγραφές, με καυστικότητα και χρησιμοποιώντας β’ πρόσωπο πολλές φορές για να τονίσει την κατάσταση και να σε βάλει με έμμεσο τρόπο και εσένα μέσα στην υπόθεση. Είναι τόσο αφηγηματικό, ρεαλιστικό και κινηματογραφικό το έργο που μπορείς να το διαβάσεις απνευστί. Τίποτα δεν με εντυπωσίασε άσχημα, γιατί δόξα το θεό δεν είμαι πουριτανή και το μυαλό μου το έχω καλλιεργήσει για να είναι ανοιχτό , όταν διαβάζω λέξεις και γράμματα, που πίσω από αυτές ο συγγραφέας σου αναλύει τα συναισθήματα των ηρώων. Άρα εδώ έχουμε ένα επικό άσμα αγάπης, πάθους, πένθους,φιλίας και οργής.
Ότι και να κάνεις στην ζωή σου το θέμα είναι να είσαι ευτυχισμένος, γιατί αυτό που βλέπεις στον καθρέφτη είναι η δική σου ψυχική διάθεση. Ο έρωτας είναι έρωτας και γεννάει δεσμούς αφοσίωσης, είτε είναι ομοφυλοφιλικός ,είτε μη και οι σχέσεις χωρίς ειλικρίνεια συνεπάγονται με σεξ χωρίς ευχαρίστηση. Και από την άλλη πλευρά η απελπισία όσο και να σε γονατίζει σε κάνει να προχωράς μπροστά. Ποτέ μην ξεχνάτε ότι η ζωή μας είναι κομμάτι κάποιου άλλου και πόσο όμορφο είναι τα μάτια του έρωτα σου να σου θυμίζουν τον ουρανό που λάμπει εκεί ψηλά κάθε μέρα!
Η ζωή είναι σαν το αεροπλάνο , τα κοιτάς όλα από ψηλά.
Τι είναι η ηθική? Οι ανθρώπινες πράξεις, οι οποίες είναι ορθές και αποδεκτές από το κοινωνικό σύνολο? Και πόσο φόβος υπάρχει μέσα στην ηθική σου? Πάρα πολύ…. και ο φόβος της τρέλα έρχεται και ξεσπάει και σε κάνει άγριο θηρίο που δεν ήξερες ότι κατοικούσε μέσα σου. Άρα αυτό που έχει σημασία είναι να είσαι ευτυχισμένος, ψυχικά υγιής και να προσαρμόζεσαι στο περιβάλλον σου χωρίς να προκαλείς. Κανείς δεν έχει το δικαίωμα να σου μιλάει και να σου συμπεριφέρεται άσχημα, είτε είναι λευκός, είτε είναι μαύρος ,γιατί ο άνθρωπός έχει τον ανώτερο εγκέφαλο του, που τον ξεχωρίζει από τα ζώα και μπορεί να συνεργαστεί με άλλους, να σκέφτεται, να φαντάζεται και να προβλέπει διάφορες καταστάσεις, τουλάχιστον αυτό θέλουμε να πιστεύουμε οι πιο πολιτισμένοι.
Με την ανάγνωση του βιβλίου θα έχετε κερδίσει έκτος από ένα ψυχαγωγικό ταξίδι, την ανακάλυψη και την αποδοχή του εαυτού σας . Επίσης θα σας δώσει τροφή για σκέψη όσων αφορά τις σχέσεις ανάμεσα στις φυλές και στα φύλα. Το κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ είναι ένα βιβλίο κατάθεσης ψυχής, που σε ταξιδεύει στα μέσα του 20ου αιώνα σε μία εποχή που συμβαίνουν έντονες πολιτικές αλλαγές για του μαύρους. Αλήθεια ποια είναι η πρώτη σας σκέψη όταν ακούτε την φράση Μαύρος Αμερικάνος? Είμαι σίγουρη ότι σκέφτεστε διαφορετικά πράγματα και το προσεγγίζεται από διαφορετική οπτική γωνία ο καθένας. Μπορώ να σας πω ότι οι σκέψεις μου συμπίπτουν με το James Baldwin γιατί έχω ασχοληθεί πολύ με αυτό το θέμα από μικρή ,όταν με είχε συγκλονίσει η σειρά Βόριοι και Νότιοι τότε και δεν θα ξεχάσω ποτέ την ερωτική σκηνή της Κίρστι Άλει αν δεν κάνω λάθος , γιατί η μνήμη μου είναι ομιχλώδης με έναν μαύρο .
Όλοι ξέρουν πόσο επικίνδυνα παιχνίδια παίζει η μνήμη, πόσο ύπουλος είναι ο ρόλος της στη ζωή ενός ανθρώπου.
Η ιστορία που θα διαβάσετε σε αυτό το βιβλίο είναι ένα τραγούδι αγάπης του Χάλ για τον αδερφό του, και ταυτόχρονα ένα τραγούδι για τον θάνατο. Η αδερφική αγάπη είναι πολύ έντονη και συνήθως ο μεγάλος αδερφός προστατεύει τον μικρότερο, ο οποίος ακολουθεί ως πρότυπο τον μεγαλύτερο. Με ψυχή και φωνή τρεμάμενη περιγράφει ο Χάλ την ιστορία, οι σκέψεις του και τα συναισθήματα του είναι τόσο έντονα που σε παρασέρνει και εσένα μέσα στην πλοκή. Έτσι έρχεσαι αντιμέτωπος με προσωπικές, κοινωνικές, οικογενειακές συγκρούσεις και με τις ολέθριες συνέπειες της απώλειας. Διαβάζοντας το βιβλίο θα σου κάνει εντύπωση και το γεγονός ότι υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που έχουν πεθάνει πριν τους πάνε στο νεκροταφείο.
Ο λευκός δεν θα μπορούσε να μας αγγίξει αν είχαμε μάθει να αγαπάμε ο ένας τον άλλον.
Στο κουαρτέτο του Χάρλεμ ,σε αυτό το συγκλονιστικό για εμένα μυθιστόρημα, ο Baldwin με φόντο το κίνημα για τα πολιτικά δικαιώματα των μαύρων, που συντάραξε της ΗΠΑ την δεκαετία του 60, αφηγείται με έναν ιδιαίτερο τρόπο την δυναμική των φυλετικών και σεξουαλικών σχέσεων πάνω στον άνθρωπο και πόσο σημαντικό είναι αυτό για να παραμείνει κάποιος άνθρωπος. Αυτό που μου άρεσε πιο πολύ είναι η απλή, μεστή γραφή του για να περιγράψει όλα αυτά σε ένα βιβλίο 757 σελίδων, σε συνδυασμό με ωμές περιγραφές, με καυστικότητα και χρησιμοποιώντας β’ πρόσωπο πολλές φορές για να τονίσει την κατάσταση και να σε βάλει με έμμεσο τρόπο και εσένα μέσα στην υπόθεση. Είναι τόσο αφηγηματικό, ρεαλιστικό και κινηματογραφικό το έργο που μπορείς να το διαβάσεις απνευστί. Τίποτα δεν με εντυπωσίασε άσχημα, γιατί δόξα το θεό δεν είμαι πουριτανή και το μυαλό μου το έχω καλλιεργήσει για να είναι ανοιχτό , όταν διαβάζω λέξεις και γράμματα, που πίσω από αυτές ο συγγραφέας σου αναλύει τα συναισθήματα των ηρώων. Άρα εδώ έχουμε ένα επικό άσμα αγάπης, πάθους, πένθους,φιλίας και οργής.
Ότι και να κάνεις στην ζωή σου το θέμα είναι να είσαι ευτυχισμένος, γιατί αυτό που βλέπεις στον καθρέφτη είναι η δική σου ψυχική διάθεση. Ο έρωτας είναι έρωτας και γεννάει δεσμούς αφοσίωσης, είτε είναι ομοφυλοφιλικός ,είτε μη και οι σχέσεις χωρίς ειλικρίνεια συνεπάγονται με σεξ χωρίς ευχαρίστηση. Και από την άλλη πλευρά η απελπισία όσο και να σε γονατίζει σε κάνει να προχωράς μπροστά. Ποτέ μην ξεχνάτε ότι η ζωή μας είναι κομμάτι κάποιου άλλου και πόσο όμορφο είναι τα μάτια του έρωτα σου να σου θυμίζουν τον ουρανό που λάμπει εκεί ψηλά κάθε μέρα!
Η ζωή είναι σαν το αεροπλάνο , τα κοιτάς όλα από ψηλά.
Τι είναι η ηθική? Οι ανθρώπινες πράξεις, οι οποίες είναι ορθές και αποδεκτές από το κοινωνικό σύνολο? Και πόσο φόβος υπάρχει μέσα στην ηθική σου? Πάρα πολύ…. και ο φόβος της τρέλα έρχεται και ξεσπάει και σε κάνει άγριο θηρίο που δεν ήξερες ότι κατοικούσε μέσα σου. Άρα αυτό που έχει σημασία είναι να είσαι ευτυχισμένος, ψυχικά υγιής και να προσαρμόζεσαι στο περιβάλλον σου χωρίς να προκαλείς. Κανείς δεν έχει το δικαίωμα να σου μιλάει και να σου συμπεριφέρεται άσχημα, είτε είναι λευκός, είτε είναι μαύρος ,γιατί ο άνθρωπός έχει τον ανώτερο εγκέφαλο του, που τον ξεχωρίζει από τα ζώα και μπορεί να συνεργαστεί με άλλους, να σκέφτεται, να φαντάζεται και να προβλέπει διάφορες καταστάσεις, τουλάχιστον αυτό θέλουμε να πιστεύουμε οι πιο πολιτισμένοι.
Με την ανάγνωση του βιβλίου θα έχετε κερδίσει έκτος από ένα ψυχαγωγικό ταξίδι, την ανακάλυψη και την αποδοχή του εαυτού σας . Επίσης θα σας δώσει τροφή για σκέψη όσων αφορά τις σχέσεις ανάμεσα στις φυλές και στα φύλα.
