This is a novel that is really about two stories. On the one hand, it's a police procedural taking place in the British city of Sheffield, with murder, suspects, and the kind of investigation that wouldn't be out of place in UK programming like the Midsomer Murders. On the other hand, however, it's about gods living among humans, and one of them, Sara, works as a cop, in the criminal investigation department, to be exact.

As a lover of British mysteries and books with magic, I found Kamsika's "Goddess of the North" to be a great deal of fun. It's a police procedural with a strong female detective who just happens to be a goddess in the Hindu pantheon. Like many detective heroes, DI Saraswathi Nayar carries a lot of emotional baggage from the past (which in her case, extends back thousands of years). Goddess of the North is the best kind of urban fantasy, the kind that holds a mirror up to our world and shows us who we are and, more importantly, who we can be. In it, Georgina Kamsika writes with a depth of heart and a purity of vision that's impossible to ignore. She also gives us a divine protagonist, D.I. Sara Nyar, who will steal your heart and save your ass all at the same time. Highly recommended!

Deeply gorgeous and evocative, this story blends a procedural mystery with the squabbles of gods and their immortal baggage. It brings eternal trauma to the foreground while also making these entities understandable on an emotional human level. Disclaimer: author is a friend. Please don't let that dissuade you, though, because holy hell, this is such a fun urban fantasy. We've got a really solid, intricate mystery, a great protagonist, a cute romance, a fresh setting (AKA, not London), an exploration of so many different pantheons, etc. I especially love the complicated relationship between Sara and her trickster mother. Also, positive lady friendships! Just please, GET THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIVES.
