Pre-reading for a university course in local history. I have a respectable knowledge of English history and some experience in researching local history so I was surprised at how much I learnt from this excellent book. The first chapter sets the context for local history and those following tackle various periods in English history focussing on the types of information available to the local historian. Well supported by case studies and interesting photographs, this was an enjoyable and interesting read.
