As I see it, everything we think we know about ourselves and the world is constructed within our minds; it follows that nothing is more important than determining which of our perceptions reflect external reality, and which are artefacts of the way we interpret things. One could reasonably argue that the best way to decide this question is through the use of psychedelics and altered states - those aspects of reality which appear changed must necessarily be pure constructs; whatever remains constant brings us one step closer to understanding true reality.
The opening sections of this book were, therefore, extremely disappointing. The foreword seems to be little more than an advert, while the first two chapters purport to be about lucid dreaming but tell us nothing that's not been reasonably common knowledge for decades. Having said that, the book is 15 years old now, and some of the material was already several years old when it was included in the collection (begging the question why the book is subtitled a collection of the most exciting "new material"). I was sorely tempted at this point simply to chuck the book into the charity bin unfinished.
To some extent, the collection is redeemed by a few of the later chapters. We have occasional detailed reviews of what seem to be properly studied and reported experiences and theories, and these are both interesting and convincing. Equally, however, we have chapters containing wild speculations, with no suggestion of how their validity might be established.
Moreover, the book has clearly not been subjected to proper proof-reading, adding to the general sense of irritation. All in all, quite a disappointing read, though with occasionally lucid highlights.
