I really hate calling books "eh" because it's not descriptive or helpful. I honestly can't think of anything better than "eh". I was really excited to read this book. By the end of Modern Sex Magick I had to force myself to finish it. I have never been so bored in my life reading about sex. The beginning was so brilliant and the end was so incredibly dull. I felt like the book sucked my will to read. All in all this book was a massive disappointment. Here are the pros and cons of this book.

Pros:
1. Mr. Kraig is sincere and modest. Most authors believe they have an authority on a subject. They
believe they are the master of what it is they are writing about. If the reader doesn't listen to them then it is the reader's fault. Kraig says that one should do whatever is comfortable to the reader or whatever feels right. Many of the spells or rituals can be changed according to the needs of the reader.

2. Mr. Kraig is very understanding that most sex magic in the occult has been biased or very anti-woman. He puts a humanist spin to sex magick. Sexual orientation or gender does not matter in this book . The only exception being the type of the "fluids" needed to complete a task. Other than that every spell or steps can be performed.

3. I really enjoyed the history of sex magic.

4. Kraig doesn't use silly words like chalice or sword to describe reproductive organs. A penis is a penis. A vagina is a vagina. If one can't read those words than one probably shouldn't be reading this book to begin with. (Although, if one has a sense of humor than one may enjoy the Joy of Sex drawings.)

5. This book does a marvelous job at explaining how magick works rather than how sex operates. If I was teaching a beginners class on magick I would use these sections for my students to understand how the laws of energy function. Kraig's explanation is the best I have seen thus far. Superior to what I have read in the past.

6. Kudos for including poly relationships and s&m since those two subjects are like walking on eggshells with regular people.

Cons:
1. If you're a Gardnerian, Alexandrian, or work with "High Magick" than this book will be a perfect fit. Not my thing. It doesn't click with me.

2. Shouldn't people who are experienced in working magick and now sex magick always be shielded. From the second one wakes up one should be shielded. Always be prepared if magick is to be done. So why is Kraig reminding people to invoke a circle or a shield? This should already be second nature.

3. As cool as reading about Masonry and Kabalah is. This is not my reason as to why I picked up this book. Even if I did the spells or rituals relating to the Kabalah I would get nothing out of it because that's not what I am interested in. Nor is it my path.

4. Kraig claims that this book shares all the Western sex magick secrets, but there is absolutely nothing Western about it. That's fine. It's just not what I was looking for.

Remember that time when there was the five of us in the house? And all of us were witches and we felt the energy tweaked even though nobody did anything sexual?

A quote on from the potential concerns of sex magick:

"This type of sexual/energy work is not the same thing as regular intercourse. One of the results of this type of work is that it may bring up feelings and emotions from the depths of the people who practice it. This can release long hidden anger, fear, rage, depression, fears, and other upsets.

When these emotions come out, the must not be ignored. They must be dealt with by talking and working through them."

I'm like, whoops.

I enjoyed the book quite a bit. If you're a student of sacred sexuality, it's a good primer for how to create and practice sex rituals. I appreciated the writings of the 4 women he chose to contribute; they were arguably my favorite passages in the book.

The rituals come across redundant at certain steps (especially beginning and ending), although I see why that's necessary - not only to emphasize the importance of cleansing, banishing, and closing steps but also to serve as a good recipe for those returning to a single ritual.

Now to find out how I can walk the path to becoming a Guide in a PSMC!

This is one of those books which will make you highlight almost all the lines in a page. so much knowledge is presented in simple and open mined manner, no bias, no complicated rituials , and what I got from this book is the assurence to my belief that sex is to celebrated, and now I know how to celebrate and make it fulfilling experience, and Laws of sex Magic are so divine one needs to understand them and implent them to lead a fruitful life.

Read the first two parts for a course on sex magick.
The history is hard to read; dense and boring and doesn't flow together easily.
The basics of the theorems was super helpful, though, since I learn best from lists and structure.

I am DNFing this because while interesting at times it's somewhat making me uncomfortable and giving me weird vibes. Maybe someday I'll return.
