As a child who grew up with parents who loved birds, I found myself completely wrapped up in this book. We had multiple bird feeders on our farm including those specifically for goldfinches, hummingbirds, orioles, and then regular feeders. That love of birds has carried on into our family as well. We keep our feeders stocked all year and enjoy the various birds that visit it. We don’t get the variety that my parents get out in the country, but we get a surprise visit once in a while from a bird

This is an absolutely stunning book, a worthy tribute to Jane Yolen's late husband, and father of Heidi Stemple, who was an ardent birder. It is filled with facts, poetry, and stories, along with information about each bird. There is a wide variety of birds and each one gets it own page with a stunning full color photograph. I found myself slowly poring over the breathtakingly beautiful photography, reading and rereading the poetry and learning more than a few things about birds. I thought my ki

I was mesmerized reading this bird book that is full of interesting information, photography, illustrations, and poetry. Upon opening the book, the reader will find bird quotes on the endpapers, setting the stage for the learning that will occur! What Defines a Bird, in the opening pages, is a nice way to help children understand just what birds are and to come up with a "bird definition". The bird anatomy pages diagram birds with labels fo the body parts and feather types. I cannot think of a f

Wow! What a fabulous book. I was indifferent to the poetry but the photographs, illustrations, and short stories are all wonderful. There is SO MUCH information here and yet it’s still fairly browsable. This is definitely a book for older kids, middle school or teens. I really enjoyed it and am excited to try some of the feeder and birdhouse ideas once spring finally comes back.

FLY WITH ME is everything and anything about birds! It teaches about a bird's anatomy, their nests, and even their feathers! It also talks about the different state birds and the history of them. Finally, the stories to the back bring everything to a fun close.

What a fantastic book about birds. I heard about this nonfiction book from a blog I follow, so I picked it up from the library. The illustrations inside are beautiful and most of the them are life-like. The book is filled with information that will please most bird enthusiast and I feel that this book would look beautiful on a coffee table even though it is a labeled a child’s nonfiction book.

Did you know this was the year of the bird? This fantastic guide will introduce readers to all things birds in art, history, story, science and so much more.
Birds can be found all across the earth and come in all shapes, sizes and beautiful colors. Did you know birds have been around longer than humans? Birds are the only living creatures on earth with feathers, but they are not the only creatures that lay eggs. Birds are warm blooded and so they must keep their eggs warm so they will hatch. Any child that has any interest in poetry, pictures, stories and loves birds (which let's be honest, that is everyone) and appreciates the beauty of nature needs this book! It book has both breathtaking photos and the poems and stories are just stunning! I don't think that I can truly capture the absolute beauty that is in this book! The photos...seriously...I can get lost inside them. I love the accompanying information that takes you further into the beauty and splendor of nature and the compl

First off, this book is visually stunning – not just the cover. The pages are packed with photography and illustrations that are feasts for the eyes.
Along with the amazing visuals in this book, there are numerous poems stories and facts, all which celebrate birds. I like that it goes through the state bird for each of the 50 states. It also starts with a history of birds in pre-historic times, bird anatomy, predators, and just the all-out beauty of birds!

I always love the photographs in the National Geographic Kids books, but I not only looked at the pictures of this book, but I also read every word cover to cover. I picked up this book from my school library just to look at all the gorgeous photos, but I got sucked right in. I learned SO much about birds and bird watching. I actually went to the website they suggested: ebird.org. I'm actually going to try out the hobby of birdwatching! This book was inspiring, and I hope I have students at my s

A masterful blend of poetry and science, image and text, a collaboration of remarkable talent, all directed to explore the concept of BIRDS.
This happens to be one of my favorite topics, and this is a book that intrigued, informed, and entertained me.
For some it may be a dip-in/smorgasbord offering, a table-top invitation, or reference book. For others, it can engage from cover to cover and become a fast friend. Either way, it belongs on classroom and library shelves, and in the hands of reader ...more

This book has everything anyone could want – gorgeous photographs, cool bird facts, information about state birds and extinct birds, legends and stories about birds, lovely poetry – and even some information about dinosaurs! I really enjoy picking up this book when I have a quiet moment. It’s fun to discover something new or read a bird-related poem before I gaze out the window at my bird feeder. I’m going to have to track down some of the movies in the “birds on screen” list.

Gorgeous, informative, spiritually uplifting! All these words describe this amazing new nonfiction offering. If you're a bird lover, this book is for you. It is long, though, and incredibly comprehensive. It's not a story book, but rather, an all-encompassing reference book. I think it would make a perfect "coffee table" book or a wonderful and very special gift. Or a great book to borrow from your public library!

This book is fantastic. GORGEOUS photographs of birds, excellent layout, bright colors, easy to read and interesting. There’s a scattering of poems throughout. Also included: state birds and facts, birds in pop culture (very recent stuff, as fresh as 2017)
Note- A bunch of evolution and dinosaur connections

There is so much to love about this beautiful book by National Geographic! It covers so many different things about birds ranging from science to culture. I would have given this book a 5 if it wasn’t for two things—the text is often too small for a kids book and I wish they would have incorporated more of the poetry from Jane Yolen and Heidi Stemple.

This is one of the most beautiful, delightful, and informative books I have ever read. I checked it out from the library, but I enjoyed it so much, I might want to buy it. I highly recommend this book for everyone and anyone of any age who loves nature. Even if you do not now love birds, you will after reading this book.

Beautiful!!! Well crafted and laid out. I recommend this for anyone (not just “Kids”) with an interest in nature, birds, science or just a book that is lovely to look through. I have read many books about birds, but learned new things. Jane Yolen and her family bring their love of birds and the power of words together for yet another book worth spending time with!

This is an absolutely gorgeous book about birds, woven together by two master storytellers: Jane Yolen and Heidi E.Y. Stemple. The combination of stunning photography (as you'd expect from National Geographic Kids), poetry, interesting facts and stories make this a must have for bird lovers of any age.
