Courage Between Love and Death by Joseph Pillitteri chronicles nurse Elspeth’s employment at a hospital in New York in the early 1900’s. Relationships between doctors and nurses are not permitted, but of course that only sweetens the pot for these players! Things get more serious when President McKinley becomes a patient after an attempted assassination. This book was well written but did not draw me as wholeheartedly into the plot as I would’ve liked. She comes from an impoverished family and her wages are necessary to help keep them from an even worse situation. But her true hope is to snag a rich husband for th ...more

The cover was what I caught my eye when I first saw this book. It really drew me in. Simple, but I adore it for some reason.

The story was interesting too. It follows Elspeth and her family who are Irish and trying to make it in New York. She lands a nursing job that is more than what she thought it would be. She has to deal with jerk fellow nurses, egotistical doctors, weird patients, prejudices, and her own heart. Before things can settle, President McKinley comes to visit. Well, and this is n
