‘Flash of Darkness’ is a quick collection of flash fiction, put together to give readers a taste of Toneye’s writing. As he would say – to sink their fangs into.

I’ve previously read two releases from Toneye, both werewolf centric, so I found this one to be a nice change as only one of the stories has any sort of werewolf narrative. In that story, a serial killer was on the loose, which in turn caused the townspeople to think there was a werewolf on the hunt.

Toneye has a very distinctive writing style; quick, sharp jabs of prose thrown at you. It’s easy to take in and I’ve not come across a piece of his that was tough to follow. He has a way of creating beauty even within the most hideous acts written on paper.

One thing I really enjoyed with this collection was that Eyenot introduced each piece beforehand.

I’ve always been a fan of author’s notes, but giving a quick paragraph about where the story was inspired from as well as its release history, that was a bonus.

The stories are all inherently dark, which is Eyenot’s speciality, but throughout I found I was connected to the story and in some, I was connected with the main character.

I think for a lot of folks this would be a great introduction to Eyenot’s writing. As he said about the collection – this makes for a really great lunchtime read, and I couldn’t agree more.

I won’t spend any time specifically going over any of the individual stories here, as they all stand on their own merit and I loved seeing a variety in his work. As I said before, it was nice to read some of his work that wasn’t werewolf-centric.

I look forward to seeing what else he has coming down the pipeline. I have one more of his books currently on my Kindle that I’ll be looking to get to shortly.

A gruesome collection of sinister thought provoking short stories that made my imagination run wild told in the most chilling of voices provided by narrator Steve Wojtas.
I really enjoyed this audio and listened to it over Halloween which added to the experience.
A author who's work I would like to explore more of.

Flash of Darkness by Toneye Eyenot is, as the title suggests, a collection of dark flash fiction. In my opinion, this is an outstanding collection. I dare say darkly beautiful.

Except the last one.

The stories herein flow poetically with rich prose of gripping terrors, graphic horrors, and psychological torments. They grab your mind and tug at your emotions. They are deep and haunting and beautifully done.

Except the last one.

The last one is a tongue-in-cheek horror thriller romp that is pure entertainment and makes the whole collection worth the read. I can’t even begin to describe it without spoiling the surprise. But I loved it.

This is one of those collections I will read again and again and wish I could acquire in paperback form.

Flash of Darkness is a wickedly entertaining collection of short (flash fiction) horror stories.

The vision of hell laid out in the first story is an interesting one that I hope the author, Toneye Eyenot, revisits. The bartering system, the potential for a “get out of hell free, card”, and the compelling demon who introduces the new soul to its eternal torment were all aspects of the story that I felt were begging to be expanded upon. (A sign of a great piece of flash fiction!)

Not all the stories were quite as compelling as the first. The third felt rather laborious - which isn’t usually something one can say about flash fiction - and the last didn't feel like it fit with the others, but overall it was an entertaining collection with more good stories than bad. (And thankfully none of the bloodsucking nightmares were remotely sparkly, so it was worth listening to just for that.)

The narrator Steve Wojtas did a great job. His sneering, supercilious, seductive demon in the first story was very reminiscent of Tim Curry, and was immediately contrasted by his hesitant, vulnerable, and ultimately chilling performance of the character in the second. Though I'm not sure if he can do more than those two accents, both were well suited to their respective stories. His style of narration helped to bring these short stories to life and to fully animate the author’s characters despite the brevity of the format.

I enjoyed the creepy, humorous, twisted tales in this book, and would definitely listen to other short story collections by this author, especially any future collaborations with this narrator. Perhaps I was influenced by the narrator’s performance, but as I was listening to these stories I really felt as though they were being told *to* me. I attend my local writing group’s shows and these stories reminded me of the more engaging ones; as if the author has written them as performances, as stories that want to be spoken, whispered, or screamed out into the night…

I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys short stories, or horror stories. It was the perfect book to welcome in the month that will bring us Hallowe’en!

*I received this book free of charge in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

If you are looking for something creepy to entertain you, you won't be disappointed by this collection of short stories. Toneye Eyenot does a fantastic job in the creepiness department! Some of these stories will definitely haunt me for a while! And, there is humor in some of them to lighten the mood.

I listened to the Audible version and Steve Wotjas does an absolutely wonderful job! He could read the phone book or a technical manual to you and give you the chills! The different voices he used for the stories were spot on and definitely fit the stories every time. I can still hear the creepiest of the voices that he used and will probably hear it in my nightmares tonight!

A vivid portrayal of evil.

'Flash of Darkness' delivers a series of fascinating vignettes that give the reader glimpses into the nature of evil. It's both thought-provoking and chilling in the portrayal of evil as rational and reasoned in the minds of the beings that do its will. These stories are beautifully written, with vivid imagery and a dark eloquence that really enhances the themes and key ideas of the stories. At times macabre, at other times reflective and morose, this is a book that enables the reader to look at life through a darker lens.

This collection of shorts will make horror veterans both smirk and shiver at the same time.
The first story is a perfect intro into the the hellish mind of the author.
If you're not familiar with this devil's work, FLASH OF DARKNESS is one hella good place to start.
