This YA story revolves around Stella, a young girl who goes on a fishing trip with her friend's family. During a violent storm, the boat capsizes and they are all dragged down into the depth. Surprisingly, they find themselves caught up in a water funnel which deposits them into a huge air-bubble cavern deep beneath the ocean. The novel follows the struggles they face to survive and hopefully escape. However, they are not alone, and soon discover they have more to deal with than just survival.

Thank you to Barclay Publicity for giving me an advanced copy to review. My opinions are my own.

This book was interesting, I'll give it that. I don't read much Fantasy as it is, so for me, I've never read anything like this about a girl who goes on a sailing trip with her best friend's family and they get into an accident that capsizes the boat. And not only that, but every one of them, all five of them, get swept up in some kind of . . . not a whirlpool, but I fail to find the correct word. A

Audio Book Review: Audio, 3 STARS; Story, 4 STARS. BENEATH by Maureen Miller immediately caught my attention because of the fabulous cover. (Yeah, I’m like that.) Then I read the premise, and there was no way I was going to pass on reading this one with my ears. The book opens with a boat on the sea being battered in the midst of a vicious storm. Within minutes, the boat and all its passengers are sinking. Readers are put into the mind of main character Stella as she descends to what she thinks ...more

Just sit right back, and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip.. Little humor there.. No this isn't Gilligan's Island. But it is a tale of of 5 people who set sail off the New Jersey shore for a family outing, get caught up in a storm which capsizes the boat and a strange powerful current drags them all down to a cave hundreds of miles beneath the Atlantic ocean.

They end up in what's called a submarine cavern and turns out they are not alone. Many people over decades have gotten caught i

Great story told in a plausible way.
Stella goes sailing with her best friend and her family, a sail which has happened so many times over the years. Unfortunately they encounter  a strange weather condition, and they capsize and the next thing Stella knows is she comes up into a strange pool of water in a cave.
Beneath is a frightening tale of what happens to a family that is lost at sea, and instead of dying they end up in an underwater cavern. Where nothing is as it seems. They meet people fro

The Story:
Beneath intrigued me from the get go, and it is a eerie story for sure. When Stella is out on a boat trip with her best friend Jill and her family it is just like every other time they go out to sea, only this time they get caught up in a storm and the boat capsizes. You think the worst by Stella wakes up in a underwater cavern thousands of feet under the sea. Are they dead? Have the entered some strange parallel universe through the storm? One things for sure she is not alone down the

I REALLY liked this series and it's stuck with me for a long time. I was so engrossed in the story I didn't make any notes or highlights and I immediately got the next book! LOL! It's Deep Sea Quest meets Swamp Creature meets your favorite mystery show!
Highly recommend for youth and YA readers and those that like YA stuff!

3 star read

I don't think this one worked for me. Not because of concrete stuff wrong with it. I just didn't click with it. It happens. Chalk it up to personal taste.

I will begin by saying that if you had to pick just three books to read then this is definitely one that you need to add to the list as it was so amazing that I read it in one sitting. The author takes us into the deep and murky ocean and keeps you underwater until the bitter end with a well-written story line that is breathtaking and unique. The characters are strong and well-developed and the twists, turns and revelations keep you on your toes. I look forward to what comes next and reading mor ...more

Notes and Opinions:
This one was really good! We get this epic ship wreck and Stella knowing she’s going to drown. Then she doesn’t and all these things happen!! I do with that we would have gotten more of the area they went to because after finishing this book and thinking about

Stella used to go often with her friend Jill and Jill's family on their boat. This was a time like many others until a sudden storm capsized their boat and a strong current pulled them to the bottom of the ocean. They awoke inside a cave in the depths of the sea, a cave where no one seemed to be able to escape from.

This story had me so intrigued that I listened to it almost in one go. The unique setting and conditions the characters were in made me want to continue just to know more. The book is

My actual rating is a 4.5.

Beneath was a book I chose to grab up and read as soon as I saw the cover and the tagline...

"An accident in the Atlantic Ocean. A fate no one could imagine."

Then, I read the blurb. I was hooked and HAD to know what would happen. Beneath is considered a young adult mystery and/or adventure. I like that definition. It leans on the side of almost fantasy/dystopian at some points just because it is sooooo different. Also, that cover is amazing! I would purchase this one

*I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. A huge thank you to the author and Barclay Publicity!*

Going into this book, I didn’t know what to expect. I haven’t read Maureen Miller’s other books, and so I had no idea what I would think of her writing style. However, I was very intrigued by the plot, and that absolutely gorgeous cover, so I gave it a chance. I’m so glad I did!

“Beneath” is one interesting story! It took me by surprise more than once and it left me wanting for much more, not only because of the ending, but as well because I just want to see more of that world and more of the characters.

Since it is just the beginning, we see a lot of world building and character development, but it is not at all boring or at a slow pace. On the contrary, we get to discover bits and pieces of the Underworld and the mysterious people that live there. At every turn there

I’ve always been fascinated by the Bermuda Triangle; is the phenomenon pure fantasy or science fiction or perhaps even real? No one has the definitive answer but there is no question that a lot of boats and planes have been found on the bottom of the Atlantic and disappearances continue to happen. The premise that Ms. Miller suggests in Beneath is not all that bizarre considering the oddities of the Triangle, is it?

Now, just suppose such a thing happened to you and you found yourself in a vast u

When I thought of words to describe the book the first words that came to my mind were weird, unique and something that I haven't read before. My genre is romance and this book is closer to fantasy than romance. Fantasy is not my genre because there is something about it that doesn't click for me. I did enjoy the book though. I plan to read the next one since the story doesn't end in this book and it will continue for at least one more. Maybe I will be able to dive into this world and a

A good fantasy book but I could tell it's definitely just the start to a new series. I can't way to read more of the series though. This one is heavy on world building and as

The pretense of an underworld like cavern that survivors of capsized find themselves washed into is certainly unique, as is the idea of adapting to the unusual makeup of the air inside the "Underworld", beside the "River Styx". The idea of being "changed" into beast-like beings and the explanation of it being from carbon di

Maureen A. Miller knows how to spin a tale. Coming from a reading that loves the ocean and has always wondered about the deep beneath this book had my attention. This gripped me and didn’t let go. It certainly felt real to me. Beneath is a realistic and frightening story of being lost at sea, with a twist. They end up capsize in an underwater cavern fighting for their life on a sunken cavern they realize they are not alone, they have to learn to survive together, and try to escape. I listened to the audiobook version of this book.

This was a pretty well written story. The author did a good job with descriptions. There were some spots in the story that just didn't hold my attention very well. Overall, I did enjoy this listen. I think the whole story was a fairly unique and the narrator brought these relatable characters to life. The author also includes some interesting aspects of life that I liked and that were suprising as well as minorly creepy.

The narrator was pretty go

I very rarely read YA and even less often Fantasy but this book popped up on BookBub as a free download and it sounded really interesting! It didn't disappoint! Even for YA it read like the main characters were a little older than they actually were. It starts out right in the middle of the action instead of spending chapters building up the background. While you definitely have to go in remember that this is fantasy and no it will not seem realistic it was still written in a way that most of it ...more

This isn’t an original plot, but Miller has made it hers! With so many unanswered questions and twist throughout this story, I couldn’t put it down. The many characters are developed throughout the story in a way that allows the story to unfold with new information on every page.

In addition to being a page-turner, Beneath adds so many unexpected aspects there are surprises everywhere. It’s had to elaborate without spoilers.

Trust me when I say Beneath is a MUST READ for lovers of all genres! I ca

It's a mystery, a horror story, and science fiction all rolled into one. Oh, and a romance. The Romance part softened the horror part for me. The plot was full of imagination and well laid out. Stella is the point of view character, the main one and the reader gets to know her well. Jill, Stella's best friend, is different in many ways from her friend and from her older brother, Colin.

As a reader you might ask yourself what choices would you make...Stella's or Jill's.
Unfortunately, the end isn't

Maureen Miller's writing is fantastic! She weaved a very creative world with interesting characters in a unique situation. I loved the description involving the sinking boat, and Stella's plight as the boat sinks and she goes down into the depths.

I was interested from beginning to end, and I was completely captivated by the story.

This book was okay but I am not a Sci-Fi person and there were aspects of this book that seemed that way.

A family and their daughters friend are out on a boat and it gets caught in a storm. The boat goes down and the family is sucked into some underground caverns where they find people who have also been living there from other boating incidents.

For anyone who loved this book, I am very sorry. I was so bored. I gave the book 100 pages and could not go further. I even skipped to the end to see if there was a reason to push forward and nothing. I came across one swear word in the reading so I cannot even claim it is as a possible clean read.

My worst nightmare, so scary. I absolutely loved it, the underworld is what they call it. I really like the closeness between Stella and Colin and his family. The ending part was the most intense and I could not stop reading.
