description~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~
I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Thanks to my friend Kate I went into it with lower expectations regarding the romance aspect, and to be honest, there really wasn't any romance in this one. Maybe a hint here and there, but overall this was more a mafia family type of book than a romance. That said, the writing was very good. The pace moved along at a good clip. The plot was engaging, but maybe a little confusing at times with so many characters and moving parts (the Irish mob, the Mexican mob, the Russian mob, the Feds). Not to mention a good portion of this book is dedicated to Cian's brother Conner and Jess's "romance". There was A LOT going on and because of that Cian and Lila's "romance" (if you want to call it that) really took a backseat. I imagine since this book ended on a cliffhanger we will see more development between them in upcoming books.

~MAIN CHARACTERS~
There were so many characters in this book. From the blurb, I assumed Cian and Lila would be the main ones, but honestly, Cian and his brothers are really the focus here with Jess (Connor's ex) being the main female lead (IMO). That said, Lila was an intriguing character and I can't wait to see where she and Cian are headed in the next book. I was intrigued by pretty much every single character in this book. Cian, Liam, Finn, and Connor were all great characters. All different personality wise. Even the secondary characters and baddies were intriguing and well written.

description

~HEAT LEVEL~
Basically zero. There is one super mild sex scene between Connor and Jess, and one super mild sex scene between Cian and Lila right at the end. Other than that this book was super tame. Like I mentioned above, I wouldn't consider this book to be a romantic suspense, more suspense with a tiny bit of romance. Perhaps upcoming books will be spicier?

~ANGST LEVEL - SEXUAL HISTORIES~
Plot wise...medium. Relationship wise...medium (Connor and Jess) None...(Cian and Lila). Most of the angst in this one comes from all the mob dealings, murders, secrets etc. Connor cheated on Jess, so those two have some issues between them and that causes relationship angst for them. Cian and Lila really have no romantic relationship throughout the book, so no angst there. There really wasn't any OW drama (other than the fact Connor cheated), and there wasn't any OM drama either. None of the people having sex were virgins.

~IN THE END~
I enjoyed it a lot. Don't go into this expecting some great romance story because you will be sorrily disappointed. That said, it was a fantastic start to a mafia family focused suspense story. It was well written and well paced. The characters were interesting and had depth. The plot was well executed (if maybe a little convoluted at times), but I wasn't overly bothered by that as this was the first book in a new series and the author was laying the groundwork. Therefore yours truly is going to give this one two thumbs up and I will definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for book two that should be out in Septemeber.description

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️STARS.
ARC BOOK REVIEW
Release Date-15/5/18

"Breath Of Deceit" was a good solid read; it was not quite what I was expecting but that was not altogether a bad thing.
Let me explain; I was expecting more of a traditional mafia romance and what I actually got was more the start of a mafia suspense with romantic elements throughout.
"Breath Of Deceit" seems to set a lot of the groundwork for the future series and what we get here is great stuff.
This is a suspenseful interesting start to what I imagine is going to be a very interesting new series.
I am really looking forward to seeing where this is ultimately heading.
With really inventive characters and fantastic storytelling its not difficult to fully immerse yourself in this colourful new world.
This was action packed and addictive reading right from the start.
Going into this and from the blurb, I was expecting for Cian and Lila to take centre stage.
Buts it's actually the youngest brother Connor and his ex-girlfriend Jess who seem to be the more dominant couple here.
We do get some insight into Cian and Lila but I am expecting so much more from them in the next instalment in this series.
Here their story seems to be just getting started.
"Breath Of Deceit" Is told from multiple POV usually not my bag but here it did seem to work.
I also should mention if your looking for heat factor this is not that graphic.
This was more story based and though we do get a couple mildly sexy scenes "Breath Of Deceit" I actually found very tame to what I'm used to more of a slow burn.
Again not a bag thing just different.
Ultimately this was a good read; managing to hook and keep my attention throughout.
A great start to a new series that I am happy to recommend.
Thank You to the Author for providing me with an ARC of "Breath of Deceit (Dublin Devils #1) " of which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

3 'where was the romance' stars?

I must have read a different book compared to all the fantastic reviews here, so it seems once again I am in the minority here so take this review with a pinch of salt.

I was intrigued by the blurb and that in all honesty should have been the first sign as a mention to a heroine wasn’t really made in the blurb. So that is kind of my fault.

The characters are all interesting in their own way. Cian is trying to get out of the family business being the boss of the Irish mafia he will do everything to protect his brothers. He expects never to survive his double life. The plot mainly concentrated on how Cian was going to get his brothers out.
The book is well written, and the pace overall was solid. The development of why the story was going interested me but it would slow down with what the day to day routines were.

There are two opponents the Vasquez Cartel and behind them the Bratva which kind of got confusing.

The romance concentrated a lot on Cian’s brother and his ex-girlfriend Jess whom he cheated on with the sister of the Cartel. I’m not sure what the author was trying to aim at and I personally find it hard to categorise this book. Is it a thriller or a crime with a dash of romance? Romantic suspense or something completely different.

Breath of Deceit is a great mafia book.
It centers around the four MacFarlane brothers.
Cian is the eldest and doing everything in his power to protect his brothers.
He’s the head of the Dublin Devils Mafia Family after the deterioration of his fathers health.
He’s struggling with their illegal deals along with their legal businesses.
He’s trying to balance everything while keeping his brothers his main priority.
It’s an exciting thrilling book that delves deep into the life of the Mafia.
It’s fast paced with a great plot.
With The Vasquez Crime Family, the Bratva and a dad with control issues Cian’s life is far from boring!
This book is filled with suspense and drama, deceit and danger.
It’s more an action packed suspenseful book and is light on romance.
If you live a good mobster mafia book I highly recommend Breath of Deciet!

Cian MacFarlane is head of one of the most powerful crime families in Chicago. It is a job he never really wanted or asked for, but being the oldest MacFarlane brother comes with a price. Now, that his father, Robbie, is no longer able to run the family business due to health reasons, it is up to Cain to take over the reins. Cain and his brothers, the Dublin Devils, have never lived up to their father’s expectations. While Robbie still tries to rule with an iron fist, Cain has other ideas. Cain is working with the feds to ensure his brothers safety while trying to dismantle the empire his father has built.

In order to keep up appearances, Cain is brokering a deal with one of the top hackers in the dark web to move product all across the country. This, in turn opens up a host of other problems for Cain. One being Lila Rodriguez. Lila has not had an easy life growing up. Like Cain, she is on the wrong side of the law working as a computer hacker, but it is the only life she knows. She can’t help feeling an attraction to Cain, one he seems to reciprocate as well. What happens though when she stumbles on information that directly relates to Cain and his organization? Does it have the potential to put all of their lives in danger?

Breath of Deceit gives us a wonderful start into the Dublin Devils series. Here we learn the inner workings of the MacFarlane crime family. Not only are we introduced to Cian, eldest brother and in charge of the business, but we also meet his three younger brothers as well. They each play an integral part to the story and set things up to come.

I really connected to Cian as he has a love for his family, his brothers especially, and he will do all he can to make sure they stay safe and out of the game. There is no love lost when it comes to his father, though. When Cain was eighteen his father, determined to make a man out of him, led Cian to do something that he never fully recovered from. Even through his father’s cruelty, Cian is a good man deep down and you can see that as he interacts with his brothers and with Lila as well.

The plot moves along at a steady pace and really held my interest the entire way through. There is some action and it falls in line with the story taking place. I wouldn’t say that Cian is the main character as there are a lot of scenes with his brother, Connor and his ex-girlfriend, Jessica, but it worked well for me. I loved getting to know them all and it really has me wondering what their stories will be in the series.

All in all, if you love crime families with to die for sexy brothers, an intriguing story line, action, and romance that will suck you right in from the very first page, then you can not go wrong with Breath of Deceit. Be warned, the story does end in a cliffhanger, so if you are anything like me, you will be stalking Selena Laurence’s page waiting desperately for the next installment to hit the shelves.

A mix of thriller, suspense with a shot of romance…

“No one normal and decent wanted to know Cian MacFarlane.”

Irish mob brothers? I’m always up for a mafia crime romance and four siblings in the thick of Chicago’s underside lured me right in. Cian is not your typical crime family eldest son, however, as he works to bring down the family business. The tension starts high and never wavers as Cian walks a fine line that is always in danger of breaking… The writing is good as the author knows when to push, pull and push some more as secrets threaten to blow up Cian’s life and those of his family.

What did surprise me, however, was the lack of romance. There was much to enjoy here with the crime family’s business dealings providing all the drama I could wish for. What I expected was Cian and Lila’s story but instead the romance, what there was of it, was between Connor and Jess. It doesn’t take much to confuse me and I struggled to understand what the true focus was. If it was all about the crime family and their business then it was spot on. If it was romance, it missed the mark for me.

This is the first in what is sure to be a twisty, windy, route through a family’s search for truth amidst betrayal. There is a glimpse into Brush of Despair, and while I hope for more romance, I look forward to whatever the MacFarlane’s have in store.

When you are head of the Dublin Devil's you know that you will always have to watch your back BUT when your father steps down because of health reason's you never expected to have to watch not only your back BUT also look after your three brothers because YOU know in your heart YOU are the only one that will !! Even though you have been doing that ALL of your life NOW is when you have to step up your game to make sure the FBI, Spanish and Russian Gangs and even your OWN FAMILY, you CAN'T trust !!

Cian is trying to make his operation successful and profitable with no blood shed, with his new product distribution with the help of the Rogue .. little does he know the head of the Rogue is out for him .. BUT .. when a tiny, smart, tech geek brunette gets her hands in the mix something changes. Not only does it change thing for Cian .. Lila feels it too .. BUT when you are the head of Dublin Devil even a sexy brunette can not get in your way .. or can she ?? She might just hold all of the cards in the tech world that Cian needs !!

Will Cian be able to handle ALL of the duties plus his extra activities he is hiding from everyone or will the one man you thought would ALWAYS have your back since birth turn your whole world upside down .. just because .. WAR means WAR !!

What a ride .. this book sucks you in and never lets go for 1 page !! The twist and turns keep you on your toes like Cian has to be in his world !! What an awesome read !! Oh BUT one last thing .. did i mention .. CLIFFHANGER .. UGHHHH !! Love the MacFarlane Brothers !!

Breath of Deceit is filled with enemies and potential enemies. An Irish Mob family with all the problem: an overbearing evil father, the "boss" trying to save his family, and more snakes/rats/issues than they can catch.

Add in a quirky hacker that has the "boss" losing focus and it doesn't get any less complicated. Oh and then theirs the rivals, the Feds, and did I mention the dad...

Breath of Deceit is full of complications.

High in suspense, and low on romance, I really enjoyed Breath of Deceit. Book one of a series, this will not be a standalone. More of a family story than focused on one couple, this book was different and refreshing. I loved the large cast and the intricate ties between them.

Breath of Deceit was a busy book, there was a lot going on. The plot was still easy to follow, and overall, I found it this to be intense and breathtaking. The story was more suspenseful than romantic, but the attraction and chemistry between the characters was palpable. Breath of Deceit left off on one heck of a cliffhanger and I'm dying for the next installment to the Dublin Devils.

Loved this book so much. I love how it gives various characters point of view. It helps see what is going on in various stages and gives a glimpse into what they’re thinking.

Dublin Devils are just handsome devils that are part of a mob. The oldest brother is in charge or, so he thinks until dear old dad shows him he isn’t. This book introduces all the members of the cast. Though it centers mostly on Cian, his likes, dislikes, being boss, his world and the revenge he wants on one member of his family. Something happened long ago that has set him on a course to take down one man and save the rest of his family. Each brother has his own story to tell as the series goes on you will get to know each one better. For now, we deal mostly with Cian, Conner, his girlfriend and their father along with a few other people. What a thrilling ride as you are taken deep and deep into the crime world dealing with drugs, cybercrime and the FBI who wants to make a deal but the deal just got bigger leaving a crime family on the edge of trying to save their world or let it fall apart. Who will be left standing and who will end up dead, the world as they know it does a 360 spinning out of control.

What an exciting read with thrills, excitement and danger as a father and son fight it out. One's health won’t let him run the business and the other doesn’t run it the way his old man does which lead to control issues. When Cian was eighteen something happen to turn his world upside down turning him against the man he calls his father. Nothing has ever been the same since. What it must be like to have all the money in the world you could want but never being able to walk outside without bodyguards, wondering if today will be your last day alive since other crime leads wants what is yours. You can’t just go for a nice dinner, shopping or even a trip. At first, I had mixed feelings for Cian but as the story really takes off he becomes my hero in so many ways.

The characters are fun, exciting, dangerous but at the same time fearful, not many wants to get into their crosshairs. Above all my heart went out to Connor and his girlfriend for waiting a life that is normal and knowing they can’t have it. The next would be Cian who wants to give his whole family their wants and desires at a great cost to his self. I did like how he tried to handle things in a calming manner keeping peace where his father wanted war. I liked how he tried to help others not only his family but those outside of it as well. He is a man of honor who said what he means, but he isn’t bad, just caught up in a world he was born into. Just when things are going his way someone steps in throwing a tailspin on his world leaving it spinning out of control. He fights to tilt it back but finds some things will never be the same.

I really loved and respected his mother she is a gem, his brothers won me off as well but his father should be taken out and shot for what he has done to his family. The women in the boys lives are sweet, kind and just dearly. The author gives you a well-thought-out plot that holds your attention with a read I could not put down. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and watching some take their last breaths. (Does that make me a bad person, sorry, but they deserve what happened to them) I found myself talking to them, smiling with them, and my heart just broke for a few. It is a very Intriguing read that sucks you in from the first page and leaving you holding your breath at the last page with an OH NO. The ending is somewhat of a cliffhanger which I hate but here I didn’t mind it at all because it semi completes itself which was a very good place to stop.

All in all I totally loved it and can’t wait for the next book in this series to come out. If you like crime mob stories with danger, excitement, love, drama and revenge this is the book for you.

I was here for Alexander Cendese. Searched for books narrated by him and found the Dublin Devils series.
And ended up loving it!
The series is not romance, it is suspension or something... But I enjoyed it so much - reading about the MacFarlane brothers and the strong bond between them.

Breath of Deceit is a great start to a new series, pulling me right in to the Chicago Irish Mob scene and now has me hooked to find out all there is about the MacFarlane family to see just how each of these brothers is going to get their HEA.

At the center of the MacFarlane family is Cian, who has inherited rule of the Dublin Devils from his father, who, let’s just say, is not a nice man, especially as he continues to try and influence the Dublin Devil organization, often at Cian’s expense. You know a character is well written when even though you see the bad things they do that go against everything you know to be right, you can’t help but fall for them, and Cian is one of these characters. His main goal is to try and save his brothers, even if it means sacrificing himself. He may be a criminal, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care deeply about his family and will do whatever he needs to save them. He’s accepted the fact that his happiness is not something that will ever factor into any equation when it comes to saving his brothers...but when he meets Lila for the first time he has a reason to want more for himself.

Lila is the perfect match for Cian. She also operates on the wrong side of the law, hacking her way around cyberspace and running illegal operations and storefronts on the dark web. She may be infatuated with Cian MacFarlane, but she knows exactly what he is and the danger he brings to her life, but she also sees the man behind the mob boss.

Lila wasn’t sure what it was she felt about Cian MacFarlane, but she knew there was no way she was going to let Xavier succeed. In the last few weeks, she’d learned about the mob. They weren’t all created equal, and Cian MacFarlane was the cream of the crop. He was a drug lord, a criminal, and a man who killed other men. But he was also a conscientious, decent leader, who could instill fear and respect in equal measure, a man who was capable of mercy and love. You only had to hear him atlk about his brothers to know it.

And a single kiss from him could send a girl’s mind reeling for days.

Although this book doesn’t take us through the finish of Cian and Lila’s story, it does set the stage for the MacFarlane family and builds the world of the Dublin Devils. I loved the brothers, each of them are so different, and I can’t wait to find out what is in store for each of them - especially when it comes to seeing who ends up changing their world. There were a lot of characters and moving parts in this one, but by the end everything comes together to set the stage for the rest of the series. There’s not a lot of romance or sexy times either, but there was plenty of other action to keep the story moving along.

I’m a big fan of Ms. Laurence and have enjoyed everything I have read from her, and Breath of Deceit is no exception. This book is a bit grittier and darker than the others I have read, but she does a great job immersing you in the dark underworld of the Dublin Devils while still giving her characters depth and emotion. This one does have a HEA, but not quite what you are expecting, so be warned that there is a good chance you will be sucked into the world that the author has created and totally invested in this series!

Now to wait patiently for the next book…

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book I received from the author.

Another new to me author (must be the week for it) and I have to say that the literary world seems to be developing some serious talent because this was a super start to the authors new series.
I like a mafia read, I can’t say I always love them but there is usually something interesting about the whole dynamic, so it was with that and the intriguing blurb in mind that I opened the first page and I must say that whilst I wasn’t completely sure what I was getting into, in the scheme of things I would say that the story was enjoyable.
I liked the fact that the major protagonists were Irish, four feisty brothers that are not only knee deep in the seedier side of life but that were for the most part as sexy as sin.
For Cain, life is far from what he wants it too to be; he may have been born into the world of crime that has devoured his family but that doesn’t mean he wants to stay there, he will do anything to get out and not just him, he wants to take his brothers with him.
Nothing is as it seems and there is no straight forward solution to the life that they lead, they are entwined with some devi9ous people and breaking free may just be a fanciful wish, seeing it to fruition might prove a stretch too far for any of them.
I liked the fact that there was a lot going on and in many way the author was laying the groundwork for the books that are to follow but you will not be disappointed in the connection between Cain and Lila, theirs was something that had potential but came with a truck load of additional baggage.
If I have a criticism I think it would be that I wanted a little more romance, a tad more of a connection between the two main characters, I am not saying that there wasn’t any because there was, but I think I would have fallen harder if I could see the happy ever after somewhere in the storyline…Now you need to find out what I mean about that for yourself??
The author was clever with her descriptions, accurate with the level of angst and drama that she included in each page and most telling…she knew when to say nothing, there was an element of WTF that I would have to say was the main reason that I continued to flip page after page.
With a fantastic cast of secondary characters and of course the remaining brothers to get my hands on, I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series already!

When the author mentioned that this book would not be her usual romance, but instead a story about an Irish crime family in Chicago, I was so excited! I am one of those gals that loves the mob/mafia/crime syndicate films and TV shows. I just knew Selena Laurence had the writing chops to really entertain me and she did NOT disappoint! I read this book twice, first as an advanced reader copy and then my purchased copy when it landed on my kindle at midnight (Who needs sleep? Not this reader!). Selena Laurence has a real knack for writing sexy, smart, layered characters and I was happy to see that same writing style carry over into this book. The MacFarlane family is intense! I love these Irish brothers and the way that each of their stories is brought to life in this book. As a reader, you think you understand their motivations for being involved in the family business, but then come the little bits of information that make you consider the characters in a different way. Each has their role to play, and it's fascinating to follow along as their choices play out. The plot, as I stated earlier, is not a romance with a HEA; however, there are romantic elements and couples that I found myself hoping would be able to work through their issues. Beyond all of that, at it's core this book is a fascinating look at a very twisted family dynamic! The brothers' devotion to one another, especially in light of their father's particularly nasty attitude, is almost heartbreaking. The story-line, full of so many secrets, regrets, and sacrifices, was excellent. I'm honestly looking forward to reading this book again. Yes, AGAIN! I need more of the MacFarlane family and really can't wait to get my hands on the next book.
I really hope that if you love Selena Laurence's work, but you initially balked at reading this book, that you'll reconsider. I know it's a new direction, but the MacFarlane brothers are so worth taking the chance! The author continues to prove her spot on my Top 10 auto-buy list is well-deserved!

Note***I call dibs on Cian! Yep, he's mine. Sorry, not sorry!

Four brothers trying to make a living, it's not hard when you are a MacFarlane. Cian is the boss of the Dublin Devils, the Irish mob in Chicago. Keeping his brothers alive is the hardest job he has and he will do anything for them.
While they own a few legal businesses, they still deal in illegal ones which is why there are so many reasons to watch your and your brothers backs. Not only is the FBI breathing down your neck, Cian has to deal with other cartels, mobs and anyone trying to take over your territory. While his father, who used to be in charge, wants Cian to run things like he did, Cian doesn't want war and killing to be the only way to keep the Dublin Devils going.
Meeting Lila of Rogue has rocked him a little, she is beautiful and has him feeling things he can't afford to be feeling. While Lila sets up an online forum to see their product online, Lila finds herself wanting to spend more time with Cian.
Cian wants to protect those he loves and to keep them safe and now that includes Lila. He wants to send her away to protect her. Will Lila go, so she will be safe? Can Cian protect everyone he cares about? Will he find out who is betraying him with his father? What will his father do next?
I loved everything about this story except that it ended, I need MORE NOW! If you love a great mob story, then you need to read this one, it is perfect. It had me from the very first page and I couldn't put it down until the end because I needed to know how it ended. But let me tell you there is one hell of a cliff-hanger. If you haven't read anything by Selena Laurence, start with any of her stories, you will not be disappointed.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

Wow, this book is a masterpiece from Selena Laurence, and I loved her Powerplay series. This, this could turn out to be even better. I never thought I would say that of a book about an Irish gangster family — those plots are not usually the books I pick.

I’m so glad that I read this book though. It’s one of those books that once you start, it's difficult to put down, and if you have to the story stays with you, leaving you half in the world of the MacFarlanes and half where ever you have to be in real life.

There is so much plot in this book, so many different stories. We have love and hate, of family as well as lovers. We have rivalries between individuals and families. We have people committed to a life of crime, those trapped by it, and those whose relationship changes with respect to the work of gangs. All bound into the richest set of characters that I’ve read in a long time… characters who are not just introduced to us, but also developed through the course of this book. And it all starts with a betrayal, of the worst kind.

I read some of the other reviews and if I have one recommendation for the reader it's that you suspend wanting to know too much about where things are going for the first few chapters. I would say that it took me about three chapters before I fell deeply under the spell of the plot. Before that I was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of characters, I wanted to know “whose book is it?” who was the central character. It’s Cian, but it’s not exactly or only his book.

Please read this. You won’t regret it.

4 STARS

This is a new author to me so I did not know what to expect but the cover looked good and the blurb peeked my interest enough to get a copy.

I do love this author's writing it is fantastic and had me looking and wanting more. I am a huge suspense type person and this was a good fit for that. This is NOT a romance book. There is a little in there don't get me wrong but the plot is more about suspense, drama, mafia and the sorts. There is a fair amount of characters in this book and since it was left on a cliffhanger I am assuming there is plenty more to come about all of them. Cian is a great character I enjoyed his story his personality and what he is trying to accomplish for his family. I liked Lily to she is a good female character with plenty to offer and I hope to learn more about her in the coming books. I am not sure I would agree with this being Cian and Lily's story I felt I was learning more about Conner and Jess then the other 2 so I am having a hard time of coming up with who exactly are the main characters in this one.

Now having said all the above it was a good read for me like I said I am a huge suspense lover and this one did well for me. I enjoyed this authors writing it was paced well and very put together. The characters are developed but at times I thought maybe there could have been a bit more. This one is angsty, suspenseful and dramatic. I am looking forward to what is coming next.

This is only the second book that I've read by the talented Selena Laurence, and seriously, between the two, they were miles apart in difference, but both were amazing, which shows me how versatile that this author truly is. Anyway, I just had to get that out there for whatever reason. Breath of Deceit was a story that I never saw coming, as it was kind of light on the romance (which didn't really bother me), but heavy on the edge of my seat suspense (which I totally ate up), and my heart is still racing because even at the end of it, my questions aren't answered at ALL, NO, I HAVE NEW ONES! So, I'm going to start out with talking about the cliffy ending which has me all kinds of jacked up, which means I have to add Ms. Laurence to the list of authors trying to KILL ME DEAD, hash tagging her FOREVERMORE #EVILWHORE! Normally, I have more self control, but nope, not this time. I LOVED Cian, and I LOVED Lila from Rogue so much, and I would have LOVED it more for them to explore what I believe some chemistry there. And that cast of secondaries?! Who the hell knew who was loyal and who was bad?! Not me, so all I could do was drop f-bombs as twists were somewhat unraveled, and sing colorful metaphors when more trouble rang the bell. So yeah, I'm already ready for the next book, and I'm praying that I get more Lila & Cian this time or I may go mad, but at least the MacFarlane bros are HOT HOT HOT! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

I love a good mafia read and what better than one that has four sexy as sin Irish brothers who run the Dublin Devils. This story is very much a cloak and dagger suspense filled with drama, danger, betrayal, and a complex romance. Going in I was unaware that this would not be a standalone, but hey I’m not going to complain if that means more of these Irish mobsters.

I am not going to speak on the guts of the story, you can read the book yourself. The synopsis gives you a pretty clear picture of what the book is about. What I am going to discuss in my review is the overall creation that this author has provided us. The powerful plot, the intense storyline, the perplexing characters, the polished delivery, the impeccable grammar and structure all combined into one product that resulted in an impassioned satisfying and eloquent read.

Laurence leaves the reader not with a shocking cliffhanger, but with a precarious premise that things are about to heat up and soon shit is going to hit a running fan and be launched in so many directions there will be no telling who will be hit and what the consequences may be.

Breath of Deceit is a first rate read and I am anxious to see as to what heights this story may achieve in the next installment of the Dublin Devils.

4.5* Deceitful Stars!

Selena Laurence has quickly become an auto-buy author for me. It is all about her characters. She makes them so authentic and complex that you'd swear they were going to step out of the book and have a cup of coffee with you.

I was thrilled when I saw the blurb for Breath of Deceit. An Irish crime family? A genius hacker? Yes. I am here for it. Let's go!

Since this is the start of a new series, the beginning has a little bit of set up and sorting of characters, but then it takes off and you can't look away.

Lila is the epitome of a strong female character that kicks ass with her brains and skills rather than Lara Croft style. She's witty, smart, and doesn't bother waiting around for the male characters to take charge. She can handle it herself.

Cian is the perfect antihero. He's doing what he has to protect his family and doesn't really care if that is in line with the law. He has his own code and part of that means doing what's necessary to protect those he loves.

This cast is round out with three of Cian's brothers and their tyrant of a father. The family dynamics are heart-wrenchingly realistic.

This book reads like Sons of Anarchy meets Road to Perdition (or maybe Casino). It's an intriguing plot that delves the reader deep into the underworld of organized crime and even deeper into the mind of a man born to lead who only wants out.

Laurence is an expert at building tension and suspense. I actually breathed a sigh of relief at one point. Of course, that was short-lived because...well, I can't tell you. But trust me, it's intense.

Without spoilers I will say the ending leaves you satisfied but dying for the next one!

I will be recommending this to several friends!

It was totally refreshing to read about Cian and Lila. I was so happy to be thrown in the mafia world, and by what an amazing author! I absolutely loved where she went with this story- it was so unique and I was totally engaged from the first page.
I would have to say my favorite thing about this book was Cian. He fiercely wanted to protect his brothers, and had plans that included doing whatever he could, to protect them. As hard as that was, he also had to protect Lila-newfound systems coordinator. The two had immediate chemistry, and i loved the push pull that was created between the two. Though it’s hard to have such a weakness as love in Cians world-they finally make it work after some huge twists and turns.
I’m truly excited for the next book in this series-everything about it was amazing! - By Victoria

I was in the mood for some mafia badassery so I dived into this one. I have a huge weakness for mafia romance and unfortunately this was really slim on the romance but I don’t care, I loved the MacFarlane brothers anyway! A word of warning: You will need to have all three books handy! I owned book 2 thinking each book is about a different brother, but no, the story continues from one book to the next with all the brothers involved. I’m not normally a fan of that because I don’t like being forced to read an entire series at once, I like to jump around from book to book but I liked getting a little bit of each brother along the way and it’s helpful to get all the info in chronological order. I am definitely invested in the brothers after book one, I am rooting for Connor to make it and Cian to hopefully find a way out for the others! I was disappointed in Danny at the end so I’m curious to see what comes of that situation in the next book and crossing my fingers that Robbie gets what’s coming to him!

Breath of Deceit by Selena Laurence is a fantastic mafia romance read. This has 4 sexy Irish brothers who run Dublin Devils. This is really a romantic suspense story that is filled with drama, angst, intrigue, betrayal, passion, heated passions and a layered romance. It is good knowing this is not a standalone because we get more of these sexy Irish men. I don’t want to give the plot away because this is a story that you must experience yourself. It’s best to read and go thru every emotion, every feel while reading. The plot is super intense; the chemistry between Cain the current head of the Dublin Devils and Lila the hacker is something that will have you rooting for this couple. There is this romance going on between Cain and Lila and then there is this intriguing plot of organized crime that Cain is tied up in , for he was born into and he is just a man who wants out. It entraps him and his siblings. So there are several stories going on in one book. I enjoyed the layered effect and getting hooked by the engaging characters, fascinating plot, and the fresh storyline. I also enjoyed the secondary characters which were featured in this book because they added another layer already at play. This book is wonderfully written and the ending leaves you satisfied yet craving more from these Irish brothers. I look forward to reading the next book in this new series.

My Rating: 4.6 stars *****

Wow! I am very impressed with the beginning of this new series by Selena Laurence. It is a different kind of book than she has done before, and at first I was not sure if I was going to like it because I was already fond of her writing style and pattern, but Dublin Devils is going to be a page-turning, hand-sweating ride from this outing.

This starts the story of Cian and Lila; for people who do not like cliffhangers or entwined books, this may not be for you; there are things left on the table that will have to be further explored. But the characters are amazing, and the fine line Cian is having to ride in his attempt to keep his family safe is tense and interesting. Highly recommended, and very glad to have been able to read this launch for Selena Laurence.

Breath of Deceit is a page turning suspense story. Once I started, I couldn't put this book down until the end. We get to follow the MacFarlane brothers as the each have their own issues to deal with. This book has several different points of view from several characters but Cian MacFarlane is the lead in Breath of Deceit. He is the oldest of four brothers and is trying to survive the best he can. He is running the Dublin Devils, the Irish Mob in Chicago, while dealing with his own family, a rival gang, the FBI, and even outside forces that he isn't aware of! All of this makes for the page turning story that is Breath of Deceit. I can't wait for the next books to continue the story.

I was just a tad confused with this book... maybe I’m in the minority here, but with so many different characters point of you it was just confusing. The blurb is what sucked me in. There was the promise of a lot of action and suspense and there was, but this book just left me feeling overall meh. The book was supposed to be centered around Cian and Lila but in some parts I felt like they took a backseat. Overall The writing it was good and the character development was spot on. I just didn’t connect with this book like some of the others I have read by this author.

If you love good mafia books then this one is for you. You get the MacFarlane's head of the Dublin Devils the Irish mob in Chicago. You are taken on a ride along with Cian, Liam, Connor and Finn as they try to not only run their illegal business but balance their legit ones too. Pressure is on as Robbie their father to push for war with rival mobs. To say the brothers have a complicated relationship with their father is an understatement. I love how close the brothers are and how Cian is willing to sacrifice so much for his brothers. I can't wait to see where this series leads.

I accidentally downloaded this book. I’ve never liked mob boss books and I missed it in the description somehow. I really didn’t want to read it but I had already committed. From the first page I was drawn in. The book moved at a steady pace. The characters are definitely not angels but they are endearing. Life is not black and white. Sometimes you have to live the life you were born into. I not only thoroughly enjoyed the book I am now impatiently waiting for book 2. I received an advance review copy in exchange for an honest review.
