Years ago I decided to read the complete work of this author, a choice that I came to regret: while Lovecraft's contribution to the field is indisputable, and while a small number of his stories are good, the vast majority of his work is mediocre at best, and often marred by horrifying xenophobia. I thought I was done reading his work, when I came across this collaborations between Lovecraft and de Castro that I had previously missed. I decided to give it a try since in my experience some of the ...more

by H. P. Lovecraft and Adolphe de Castro

Lovecraft's revised this story for de Castro. The original story isn't supernatural. It was supposed to be a story about a doctor, Alfred Clarendon, who is researching black plague and trying to create an antitoxin. After losing the access to San Quentin Penitentiary which was full of suitable 'subjects', he tries to convince someone close to him to be a 'sacrifice to science'.

Lovecraft kept the main story but added supernatural elements (an evil Atlantea

A set of interesting events, possibly written in the most dull and dreary manner possible. As usual for Lovecraft, the focus is on the wrong characters, and the most interesting things happen off-screen. It's also obnoxious to have the last-minute redemption, because poor Alfred was only led astray by the nasty Atlantean, and was not at all responsible for all the harm caused. Sure. Uh-huh. Then there's the long-suffering sister, who mostly wheedles and faints, and is loyal first to her father, ...more

A talented doctor becomes a mad scientist, a fanatic that will stop at nothing to obtain the satisfaction he seeks.

I would class this more as an novella. For what it's worth, I really quite liked this. Perhaps not enough to give it four stars but for Lovecraft - whom I don't have the highest opinion of generally - this was pretty damn good.

A standart "mad scientist" horror story, with a twist of Lovecraft's other worlds and elder beings. Pretty good.

No está al mismo nivel de otros relatos donde el protagonista abraza la inevitable tragedia demencial pero no puedes dejar de leerlo por saber el final con todo detalle. <3

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.

Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a
