This is the second in criminal defence barrister, the Polish Jack Kowalski series, set in Manchester. It works fine as a standalone. Jack is over the moon at becoming a barrister at his chambers, and although a relative novice, finds himself pushed to the limits as he finds himself working three demanding and challenging cases. He is desperate to impress his legal aid instructing solicitor, Lara Panaissai, wanting to begin a relationship with her, only there is always something that gets in the ...more

I love a good legal thriller me, usually ones set in the US with the exception of one or two British based settings – Neil White (of course) and since I read the brilliant Cut-Throat Defence, also Olly Jarvis.

So this is the second Jack Kowalski novel and I love this character – he is beautifully layered and has a strong moral centre – in this story he is juggling several cases none of which are clear cut and all of which have strong social issues at the heart of them. This is very intelligent st

I hadn’t heard of Olly Jarvis before being asked to participate in the blog tour for this book, but I do love a good legal drama, and was delighted to find Unconvicted definitely lived up to my hopes!

It’s Olly's third book, and the second in a series featuring Jack Kowalski, a young Manchester-based barrister of Polish origin. You don’t have to have read the previous book to enjoy this newest instalment, but it’s probably better to read them in order - while it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the

I was delighted when I learnt that Olly Jarvis had written a second novel featuring Jack Kowalski, the first Cut-Throat defence I reviewed here in 2016. I enjoyed this one equally or perhaps even slightly more.

Unconvicted is certainly a page turner and I do love a legal thriller. Olly Jarvis really manages to get under the skin of his characters. Jack in particular is wonderful, he has a real sense of right and wrong and wants to do good.

Featuring a few new cases, Unconvicted also sees the welc

I really loved Cut Throat Defence, the first in this series, when I read it a while ago so I was very much looking forward to reconnecting with Jack, Lara et al in this second in series. Obviously usual series rules apply, to get the best from the characters in terms of backstory and development, I would recommend you read book one first. Also if you get chance, Death By Dangerous which is also very good.
Jack is a very highly skilled, intelligent junior barrister. He has a few good wins under hi

So when I heard Olly Jarvis had another book out it was a no brainer, of course I wanted to read it!

We are back with Jack, a barrister who has a bit of a habit of getting himself mixed up in some tough situations. Hazard of the job.

Once again Olly delivers what I've come to expect of him. The perfect mix of plot development inside and outside of the court that makes it tough to put down. This is the type of crime book I love..while the action jumps from the case to Jack's personal life effortles

I studied and enjoyed, A-level law and business law as part of my University degree. I had the choice between two professions, Law or Accountancy. I decided to follow my heart and mind, both were telling me to chose the Accountancy route. But, I always wondered what life would be like as a Barrister. Unconvicted written by Olly Jarvis, who himself is a criminal barrister, has given me that insight through an enjoyable, entertaining and easy reading page turner of a novel.

This is the first legal

Superbly written thriller. Another legal roller coaster from Olly Jarvis. Hurrah! I’m a real fan of this writer - quite simply one of the most exciting authors in the business. Atmospheric courtroom drama, set in and around Manchester. Junior barrister Jack Kowalski, young hero of ‘Cut-Throat Defence’, is back! With Lara Panassai once again his attractive instructing solicitor. Two trials to win: losing could mean the end of both careers. I much admired this duo’s shared tenacity in

Interesting book especially if you like Courtroom drama/ Police procedurals. This book has an added extra in that the protagonist is of Polish extraction so as a backdrop there is his relationship to those around him and the prejudice he receives from his peers. There are really three stories in this book and a fascinating insight into what goes on behind the scenes. The cases are obviously not clear cut so there are plenty of surprises along the way. The most important fact that the book deals ...more

I loved his last book, "Cut Throat Defence" and this is even better. A fantastic combination of a young Polish barrister, Jack Kowalski struggling to gain acceptance within the closed legal community and his charming young instructing solicitor, Lara, who he can't quite commit to tell about his growing feelings for her.

They are two sympathetic and credible characters whom you root for and they form a winning partnership in court and hopefully one day (probably in about book 7!) outside too!

Jack and Lara have a lot on their plate in this fantastic second installment! Jack has his back against the wall as he tries to prepare and present several cases while facing setbacks at every turn. The cases themselves are complex - with some unexpected twists! I love Jack's strong moral character, his love of family and his endearing crush on Lara. Short chapters make this book move at a quick pace, matching the tempo of the narrative. Mr Jarvis excels at "showing" - not "telling"- the story v ...more

Excellent read set in the courts of Manchester and following the cases that get sent to Jack a barrister with a conscience and crush on his instructing solicitor. Great courtroom scenes. No 2 in the series, I can’t help feeling I’m missing something in the sub plot so I’m off to buy the first one now and looking forward to the third instalment

Highly entertaining book. An engaging set of characters with back stories you'd like to get to know better in upcoming installments.

I can see these being a very successful series of novels. Would also work very well on TV.

I recommend this book as a good read. I read the first Jack Kowalski book and liked it. I think this one is better. I shall be looking forward to the next book.

I am reviewing this book for Olly Jarvis - Caneloand NetGalley who gave me a copy of their book for an honest review.
Can be read as a stand-alone book despite being part of a series. Set in Manchester, Polish Jack is a barrister who is finds himself working three different cases. Excellent story and wonderful characters. Will be reading the rest of this series and keeping an eye out for new ones.
