This book was a real treat: well-written, interesting plot, lots of twists and turns, and a finale that kept you guessing until the end. When Melissa receives a letter from her young niece, her suspicions about the strange deaths of her father and sister-in-law are confirmed. She must leave gold-rush California and go back to New Orleans to make sure her niece is safe, but is thwarted by every attempt to book passage on a ship until she meets Sebastian. The miner is taking a young, female orphan ...more

This book grabbed me from the first page! A woman was poisoned and her daughter Emma saw what happened. She was so afraid and sent word to her aunt Melissa in California that she needed her. Melissa had married a man years ago, just to get away from her terrible brothers, and feeling her father had been poisoned but they would not listen to her. Shifting to Califonia and Melissa husband had died and she was determined to get to her niece.
But what to do? She had no money left and she had been att

There’s a mysterious death, questions, action, danger and sweet romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery and how it kept me turning the pages.

Kudos to the author for hooking me on her book. I don’t normally like romances but the drama, mystery, adventures and the ultimate villain kept me turning the pages. A great read.

It seems to be common these days for fiction to be short, novellas rather than novels. For an indie author wanting to build their brand, this probably makes a great deal of sense: get more out there build a fanbase. But, after reading this book, there is definitely something to be said about longer works. Novellas, because of their short nature, have a relatively simple plot with perhaps just a subplot or two to add external conflict. But longer works allow the author to interweave many conflict ...more

If you are thinking adventure upon the high seas, you are quite wrong. This story is about a high fluting family who thinks everyone is beneath him. Family members are estranged and the two head brothers are as cold as ice. One sister is sent off to California with a warning never to return, while her niece witnesses her mother's murder by her father. The main characters are Melissa, the sister in California trying to get back to her niece and Gold miner and banker Sebastien Henderson. The fire ...more

I really enjoyed all the historical detail Davis packed into this story. Set in 1850, the action spans pre-Civil War New Orleans, Gold Rush era San Francisco, crossing the Isthmus of Panama (before the building on the canal, of course), and a long sea voyage. Melissa, our heroine, is desperate, daring, and devoted to her niece, whom she must race across all this space to save before a killer claims her life—the same killer who’s already snuffed out two other members of Melissa’s family. Sebastia ...more

I was completely entertained by this story. It feels well-written, well-researched, and like the author has a good grasp of the 1800’s. Honestly, it completely distracted me. Melissa Bertrand is a strong, passionate woman in an era where that is not looked kindly on. And Sebastian’s protective instincts hit high gear when she’s put in a dangerous position. I loved the progression of their relationship and the plot grabbed me from the beginning. Honestly, I loved this story. There’s a lot at stak ...more

This story could have been deepened if the author had included more details about steamship travel during this era, since so much of the book took place aboard the steamship. Melissa’s internal and external conflicts were clear, and sometimes painfully so, as she worked her way through them. Sebastian’s internal conflicts were a bit murkier, though he is the quintessential hero and the type of man every woman dreams of sailing with.

1850's Historical Romance

I love historical romance novels and Fools Gold did not disappoint! The characters draw you in and you are rooting for some and hating the others. Can't wait for second book of three!
