good bits on one of the finest poets to emerge from the new york school - berkson, the editor, would probably have delivered a better book had it just composed it himself, but i think, having known bill, he felt he was too close to o'hara to offer up top drawer criticism with any objectivity. bill would of course argue that there's no such thing as objectivity - but perhaps you get my point.

The content (reminiscences provided by O'Hara's numerous friends) was exceptional, creating, in a sense, an inverse-death mask that revealed the poet in the fullness of his character: generous, comic, brimming with empathic good nature, unusually yet undeniably alluring, irascible (when drunk), gossipy, garrulous, expeditious, sharp-tongued, and kind--in short, a soul luminous with the bright flame of humanity.

This would have been an easy 5-star, had the version I read not been so poorly proofed
