R.E.M. have been together for twenty years. From Athens, Georgia in the early 1980s through to world tours in the late nineties, Rob Jovanovic and Tim Abbott have closely followed their rise to global superstardom. Here, having unearthed a wealth of previously unseen photos and memorabilia, they chronicle the full story of twenty years of R.E.M. (Foreword with Peter Buck; introduction by Scott 'Spiral Stairs' Kannberg, ex-Pavement.)
Fairly average amble through the history of R.E.M. I’m not the biggest fan of the band but I spotted a fair few mistakes, Joe Boyd being English being one that cropped up not once but twice, for example. My biggest gripe with this book though is the pedestrian prose. Which is frankly pretty boring. There’s almost no critical insight as to what the songs are about either. If you’re looking for a deep dive into the nitty gritty of say album artwork, then forget it. If you have to read one book about R.E.M. then make it the superior, It Crawled From the South.
I loved it since I love R.E.M. As a new fan this book was very informative to me, and included many great photos of the band. I would recommend it to all new fans of R.E.M. I found this book at the library and I am planning to buy it in the future.
