In this engaging volume, of 28 battles fought in Britain between 1066 and 1746, after which there have been no serious land battles in Great Britain.
The author covers nine conflicts at length as well dealing with 19 other engagements. He always covers the history and historical context behind each conflict, which is exactly what makes this an absorbing and informative read.
He writes of the character and background and context, reading this book and helps to deepen our understanding of British history in the 700 years covered.
Therefore this is a book not only for students of military history and an overall view of the conflicts such as the struggle for the crown between Harold and William I which led to the Norman Invasion of England in 1066, the Anarchy of the 12th century, the various military struggles between England and Scotland, the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War.

Good overview for the layman. Covers historical background for each battle, army composition of the opposing forces, touches on technology, and crucially, focuses a lot on terrain, which similar books tend to overlook.

Still relevant, after all these years (I mean, since publication in 1971; not since 1746).
