Five years after the brutal slaying of her husband, software executive Jill Shannon is ready to take the next step in her life. But with her wedding to prosecuting attorney Conner Manning just eight weeks away, her future father-in-law’s political ambitions for her fiancé threaten all her hopes. Jill’s past holds dark secrets. Secrets she can’t afford to have exposed under the relentless lights of a political campaign.
When Phoenix Detective David Shaw turns up at Jill’s door asking questions about a reporter's murder, he has no idea what a lethal Pandora’s Box he’s just opened. Was the womanizing reporter killed by a jealous husband, or was it related to his drug use? Or did it have something to do with the secret expose the reporter was working on? Jill Shannon looks like a dead-end lead but Shaw can’t shake the feeling the beautiful widow has secrets she’s not sharing.
Jill is caught between the sins of her past and the shattered hopes for her future. Shaw finds himself drawn deeper into a twisted labyrinth of lies and danger. One thing is some vows are made out loud in front of witnesses. But some vows are made in silence, and witnesses can’t be left alive.

A very entertaining story of a woman who's past keeps repeating, even though she tries extremely hard to leave it behind. This story keeps your attention as it is told through the eyes of the different players who are involved. A very nice series of which I will definitely read more!!
I love that Vow of Silence by Chris Patchell gets right to the action. We have multiple storylines, threats, and danger. Drug cartels, politics, domestic abuse, kidnapping, lies, secrets, and the past…All have their place in the complex mysteries of the characters lives, filling them with danger and betrayal.
I didn’t realize this was Book II of the series, but I don’t feel it harmed my reading in any way, though I do recommend beginning at the beginning. It just made me work harder to try and solve the mystery myself. I read a lot of books like that. Funny thing, I was able to pick up the first book, Deadly Sins, for free from Amazon. YAY!
Joe Gaines, a reporter for the Arizona Republic, was ready to party without the pregnant wife he left at home. He had some blow, which he did a couple lines while waiting for the hot woman he expected to knock on his casino room door any minute. BUT….she was there for more than a private party.
Phoenix Police Detective, David Shaw, was excited to be working such a high profile case. It would be good for his career advancement.
Jill Shannon, our main character, has money and connections, soon to be married to a prosecutor and the only son of the former governor. She had left behind a dead husband in Seattle, a police officer shot right in front of her in their own home. I feel there is so much more to her story and I aim to learn about it. Jill is super smart, a whiz with technology.
I don’t know why I am so drawn to villains. I love when the villain is so likeable I want to root for them and do, but I am still waiting to ‘hear’ the full story.
The characters have many personal, as well as, professional problems. The sad thing is, the kids seem to pay a heavy price, even as their parents struggle to protect them. How many lives will be lost as the the mysteries are solved? I keep trying to anticipate who will live and who will end up dead or locked up as the time to pay the piper comes due. Will ANYONE be happy in the end?
I love complex, multiple plots, and characters that sometimes make it hard to distinguish good from bad. After all, let he who is without sin cast the first stone and I don’t see any of these characters able to do so, except the children and we won’t ask that of them.
Chris Patchell has a way of piling stories on top of stories, intermingling them in such a way that by adding the bits and pieces the complete the picture is exposed in a spellbinding way. The mystery compounds, the suspense keeps building and I am so happy to know this is not the end of Jill Shannon’s story.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Vows of Silence by Chris Patchell.
This book was better than the first in this series, Deadly Lies. Five years have passed since Jill's husband was killed, and she's mostly focused on being a good mother to Lexi and planning her upcoming wedding. But then her past meets her present, and serial killer Jill is back!
Almost all the people in this book are terrible, and yet I kept rooting for Jill. She has a chance at the end to do something selfless, and her decision surprised me a little.
I liked Conner at first, but he made it clear that his loyalty was to his family. I hope he's in the next book, I think there's more to explore between him and Jill.
There's a lot going on in the story: drug cartels, political theatre, murder, secret lives...and it's all connected back to Jill. Looking forward to the next book.
Jill is back and she can't seem to steer clear of danger. This is book two in the series. While I think it probably works fine as a stand-alone, I recommend starting with book one (Deadly Lies) for clarity and context.
I didn't really like Jill in the first book, but I did find her incredibly interesting. Here in book two, I liked her more - until I didn't. She makes some cringe-worthy choices, yet she makes them for the right reasons. A conundrum indeed! Her character is like that, making us care and then kind of taunting us for our weakness.
The plot is complex, incorporating mystery, psychological suspense, and crime. We look at family dynamics, domestic abuse, and the hidden power our past holds over us.
Given my feelings about Jill, I was surprised by how much empathy I had for her as this story went on. I wanted someone to fix everything. I wanted her life to finally get on track with some sense of normalcy. And then the ending came, and I felt like someone had stomped on my heart.
Chris Patchell certainly dragged me through a gamut of emotions here. Now I need to go hug my dogs in a quiet room while I recover.
This is a suspenseful story with an unexpected ending. Jill Shannon is a forceful protagonist and someone to be reckoned with. After reading the story, you will not do anything to upset her. The action takes place in the Phoenix area, and the events fit well in this environment. Jill is involved in so many different milieus, and manages to use all of them to forward her plans. The characters on all sides are very human and well-defined. Every major character seems to have hidden flaws that impact their lives. The human interactions are very realistic, giving a strong sense of realism to a somewhat different story. This book will leave you thinking.
Wow. What a powerful book! Starting out with a journalist, Joe Gaines, obviously meeting up with a call girl, we are stunned by what happens next. Shot dead. Done. Period. Or is it?
Filled with multi-faceted characters, in this tight-plotted, fine-prosed work, Patchell shows us that there are two sides to everyone in life. Particularly with the people in this book. First off, there’s Jill Shannon––beautiful, devoted to her daughter, Lexi, and her fiancée, Connor, and relishing her seemingly perfect life. Until her dark secrets just might be revealed. Secrets that stem from a highly abusive past and her own robust sense of justice.
We learn more about kind Connor, who comes from an overly ambitious governor for a father, and a mother who is ten steps beyond controlling. Then there’s David Shaw, the lead detective in this Joe Gaines murder mystery, who has demons of his own at home. Wendy, his wife, forever changed by a car accident, is now dependent on opioids and filled with hatred for the celebrity who carelessly drove smack into her.
Complicated enough, right? Wait, that’s just scratching the surface. Like peeling back an onion, more and more people float in and out, providing us with hints here and there of motivations in each character’s life. Particularly Jill’s. Slowly and surely, we see her revealed as ultra complicated. Not your typical feminine lead, she is touching and appealing one minute, horrifyingly calculating the next. She is as vulnerable as damaged goods, then, in the blink of an eye, switches into a dangerous femme fatale. Using her street smarts, her technical know-how, and a tiger’s ferocity, she manages to control situations to try and keep her secrets, as we turn those pages as fast as possible to see what will happen next. HIGHLY recommended!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book surprised me in a lot of ways and I did enjoy the authors style and storytelling ability. There were times I felt I was right in that kitchen with Jill and Connor (the main characters) as they were making dinner. Unfortunately I had quite a few issues with this book and that undercuts the parts that I really liked. First, when given the ARC they did not stress that this is the second book in the series. For some books/series, it is not necessary to read the first book, this one I felt it was totally needed. It was not only just a backstory, but the whole reason for how Jill was living her "new" life in Arizona.
The next major point is that Jill, the main character, is completely an anti-hero and I felt that should be stressed. Many readers might not like that part and at times it annoyed me while reading. I felt frustrated that she was doing things that I could not agree with as a person and did not wholly understand as the reader. Part of that might be the backstory that I did not know, and part of that was how she thought one action would influence others.
Overall, it was a well written book and I may read the first book so I get a better understanding of this story. I really like the author and many of her books are on KU, so I might try another book or series. I would say only read this book if you have read the first book and are okay with the main character being an anti-hero.
I received this book as an ARC for an honest review. This is book 2 in the Jill Shannon mystery and I did not read the first book. In this book Jill Shannon is an executive who is engaged to be married to Connor Manning, a district attorney who comes from a very prestigious family of politicians including his father who I a former governor. Jill has a beautiful little girl Lexie who was born after her father, Alex Shannon, a police officer, was murdered in front of Jill. Jill is a very strong woman who has secrets in her past that she wants to stay hidden. She will do anything she has to to ensure that the secrets will stay hidden and that she and Lexie will stay safe. Suddenly the murder of a reporter at the local casino seems to threaten that safety as Jill was the last person seen on camera talking to this reporter. When the police come calling Jill starts to get nervous. At the same time another threat in the form of her father-in-law to be emerges when he pushes his son to run for governor. Jill knows that this could lead to all of her secrets being revealed so she takes steps to cover things up. Will Jill succeed or will Jill's secrets come back to destroy her life? This is an excellent fast paced thriller with many surprising twists that will leave the reader engaged right to the very end. Filled with strong characters, excellent intrigue and fast paced action, this is one book you won't be able to put down.
This was a book that once I started reading, I could not put down. Having read the first book in the series Deadly Lies, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this, the next one.
Once again, we are with Jill Shannon in her new home in Phoenix. Now Jill has met up with the charismatic Conner Manning, the only son of former Arizona Governor, Pierce Manning.
All is going well for Jill. She has a small daughter born after the murder of her former husband, policeman, Alex Shannon, with whom she lived in Seattle. Now she has reinvented herself and is planning marriage to Conner when links to her very secret past begin to creep into her present.
She is plagued/hunted/chased by a Phoenix Police Detective, David Shaw, who is convinced that Jill is somehow linked to the recent murder of reporter Joe Gaines. According to CTV footage, Jill was the last person to speak to Joe and the next morning he was found dead in his hotel room.
We are introduced to Kat married to Luis who is somehow involved with the Mafia and because of this she and her daughter Ana are at risk.
So, another story told with a great plot, well developed and believable characters and all the attention to detail we have come to expect from Chris Patchell.
I strongly recommend this book to those who appreciate a well-told, well-conceived story.
Note – I was given a copy of the book to read by the author, and I choose to write this review.
Vow of Silence takes place some five years after the events in Deadly Lies. Jill is doing well in her career and is settled down with her husband to be, Conner and her daughter, Lexi. While not exactly likable, Jill is certainly an intriguing character. She's smart, calculating, and has absolutely no compunction about doing whatever it takes to keep her past buried. She also manages to fit herself into any circle with seemingly little effort. Jill Shannon is the perfect example of what we see when a psychopath is finally caught by police and the friends and acquaintances had no idea. I was a bit baffled about the need for so much of the story being devoted to Conner's cartel case, but it does merge with the storyline. Once again, we have not so much a cliffhanger as an open ended conclusion, and I'll be interested to see where Jill's story goes from here. I'm also curious to see if she crosses paths with the determined David Shaw in the future. While this thriller isn't of the heart-racing variety, when you think about the characters and what happens, the idea that one person's machinations can have this kind of impact on so many is definitely chilling.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. I have not yet read the first volume. I found this book to be an intriguing read that kept me guessing until the very end. Jill Shannon is a first rate software engineer with a dark past and present, engaged to a well-respected district attorney for whom his father has great ambitions. When a beautiful woman murders a reporter at a casino opening, Detective David Shaw begins tries to find the perpetrator from a dearth of clues. Jill’s policeman husband was killed five years earlier, saving Jill, but possibly hiding important information. Throw in a cartel and the plot gets boiling and simmers to the conclusion. I found myself very conflicted about the amorality of some of the characters and destruction of a person’s life. Having said that, I enjoyed the story and recommend it.
I would have given this one a 5 star rating except it was not stressed that this is book 2 of a series. Most authors include book 1 for those who haven't read it. I really think you need to read book 1 in order to understand quite a bit of this story. I loved the plot. It was interesting and kept me hooked from the very beginning despite being a little lost at some points during the book. There were a lot of characters and things going on that it's imperative to pay attention. I loved this author's style of writing. While I understood why Jill was doing what she was doing; I didn't agree with what she did. I will be going back to read book 1 to see if some of the things in book 2 make sense. I can't wait for book 3!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book...
This is the first book written by this author that I have read and I got this as an ARC for my voluntary & honest opinion. At first I had a little difficulty keeping track of the characters but once the story fleshed out a bit more I had no further problems. Perhaps the book wouldn't have been as surprising to me if I had read the first book in the series before reading this one. Or maybe the first book does not deal with characters mentioned in this one at all...guess I have to read the first one now! Jill Shannon is an "interesting" person to say the least...a sociopath that I sometimes found myself rooting for.
“Vow of Silence” by Chris Patchell is an excellent suspenseful mystery. Jill Shannon is the last person to talk to a reporter before he turns up dead. Detective David Shaw goes to interview her and begins to find out more than he bargained for. Jill is engaged to Conner Manning. Conner’s father, an ex-governor, has political aspirations for his son. Jill has a very dark past and many secrets to keep hidden. She stops at nothing to make sure her secrets stay buried in the past. I would recommend this book to suspense lovers of any age.
Joe Gaines, a reporter for a Phoenix Newspaper is covering a story at a hotel on the opening night of their new casino. While there he meets a young letter and decides to stay over night. He texts his wife, and proceeds to give this woman his room key. The next thing we know Joe Gaines is found shot to death. Did is jealous wife do it, or perhaps a woman's husband. It seems Joe is notorious for womanizing.
This was another excellent mystery Chris Patchell. I look forward to reading more of her books.
Great book. The story keeps you interested every step of the way. Somewhat confusing with the references to the first book. I have a hard time with the extremes the primary character goes to in an effort to save herself at the cost of truly ruining innocent people's lives. I want to know what happens to the poor set up characters. Are their lives ruined because of this person? I've never read the end of a book first, but I'll have to read the end of the next Jill Shannon book because I can't bear to read again about the destruction of lives while she goes on her merry way
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a mystery that held my interest. I was conflicted about one of the main characters. This character was definitely a sociopath but I was cheering for a happy happy ending. A secondary character was brought down just for doing his job. So sad.
This was a tightly plotted story with well developed characters. I wish the next book in this series is already written so I can start reading it right now
This book was a great read, it's one of those "can't put it down" books because you just have to find out what is going to happen next. The characters are believable & Jill, while the main character in this story, is a terrible person. It's going to be interesting to follow the rest of the stories in the series to see how Jill is eventually caught & by whom. I was given this book free to read for a review.
There pretty much wasn't a page that didn't have action or interest in one way or another. Oddly, I didn't realize there was a prior book and although much was learned about the first book, nothing will stop me from reading it. Chris Patchell has found more ways to kill than any author I've ever read. I would almost be afraid to be her friend in case she has to practice. All kidding aside, this is one incredible writer.
Jill Shannon is moving on since her husband's murder five years earlier. She is going to get married in just eight weeks, but her past might delay if not stop the wedding all together. When Phoenix Detective David Shaw shows up asking questions about a reporter's murder it opens up a whole can of worms better left closed. Can Jill find her happy ever after or will her past cause her more unhappiness and pain? I voluntarily read a copy of this book from Hidden Gems.
This book picks up where Deadly Lies leaves off. Jill has left comfortable Seattle for the drug heat a and monsoons of Arizona.. The story is as good as volume one of the series. There was no real cliff hanger in the first book or this one. The good news is that there appears to be more in this great series. I am anxious for it. Give this fine author a chance. She is pretty Damon good.
A wedding in a few weeks, and a past that won’t stay buried for Jill. Joe, a reporter, a pregnant wife at home, staying at the casino, with a stash of white powder and a leggy body in a room, She was new, and he didn’t account of the deadly evening, When Detective David shows up and asking questions, and her future father in law with his political ambitions for her fiancé, she knew trouble was ahead. Good mystery.
An excellent story with believable characters and events. I just wish the author had stated on the title page that this was Book 2 in the series. It would have been nice to have been offered the opportunity to read Book 1 first, as Vow of Silence was peppered with events that only made sense to the reader if they had previously read Deadly Lies.
This one really kept me on my toes. I loved all the suspense. Not really sure if I like Jill. I didn’t realize until later that this was booked two in the series. I do know that some of Jill’s past sounded familiar so I figured I had read her previous book. This has a lot of storylines going on. But they all come together eventually. I loved all the false trails and how the author weaved this one together. Narration is well done and I look forward to more
I enjoyed this book very much. I was 60% done when I went to Amazon and got the first one. This is going to be a great series. Can't wait to see what is in store for Jill. I also wonder if Det. Shaw will be back, also Conner. This book always has something happening. I didn't get bored or frustrated with the way the story was going.
What a plan what a plan!!!! Hold on for quite a ride! I could not stop reading and every moment I got I was reading especially the last quarter of the book. Hold on to your seat, it’s going to be bumpy! Don’t worry though Mama Bear’s got your back! The part I didn’t like about this book? It had to end..... amazing!!! Love the passion and fire in this writing! Keep it up! More please.
This woman is really interesting! She's a deep subject. I look forward to knowing more about her and her past. Her step-father certainly left his mark. I love the fact that she is a really bad person but I gotta love her just the same. Amazingly intelligent. Love the way she plans ahead and stops Shaw in his tracks! Good read.
