Charlie Harris's feline family has grown quite a bit. Someone left him a box with five kittens in it, and he's taking care of them while trying to track down the owner so he can figure out what to do with them next. Fortunately, Charlie's Maine Coon cat, Diesel, has taken to the kittens and is helping take care of them as only a cat can. That isn't the only problem Charlie is facing this Christmas, however. There's also his new neighbor Geraldine "Call Me Gerry" Albritton. Gerry is rubbing every ...more

There are babies and kittens in the house and Charlie and Diesel have their hands and paws full even before new neighbor Gerry Arbitron invites Charlie to her party. Gerry a real estate agent, did not make a good first impression with Charlie, her overt flirting really rubbed him the wrong way. Then she put up the most hideous holiday display, he and the rest of the neighbors were not impressed. They wanted to stay home but most bit their tongues and went to her party. One gue

Christmas is almost here and Charlie Harris has his hands full. His daughter-in-law is a new mother and not handling it very well. His concern for her and his new grandchild occupies his mind, but his concerns do not stop there. A box of kittens land on his doorstep. Along with his faithful Maine coon cat, Diesel, they take care of the kittens until they can find out who put them there and why.

Six Cats A Slaying by Miranda James is one of the most thoughtful cozy mystery books I have ever read. The main character Charlie Harris is one of my most favorites and it is because of the care and attention that Miranda James has put into developing the most kind and decent man who is often missing from cozy mysteries. Diesel the cat, made me from book one want to bring a rescue cat into my own family. I have read every book in the Cat in the Stacks Mystery series and have come to love and ado ...more

This is the 10th book in this wonderfulCat in the Stacks series, to which I'm sorry to say I came late to the game by reading just one. That's not a mistake I intended to make again, though, so I was delighted to be approved for an advance review copy by the publisher (via NetGalley). The two I've read stand alone well, I must add, but on the other hand, I'm always of the opinion that with any series, it's always best to start at the beginning.

So, to be honest, I’ve had this author and this book on my shelf for a very long time but since I was finally into the Christmas spirit, I decided to read it. Miranda James is a popular name in the Cozy Mystery genre and so I was looking forward to try my very first book by him.

What I found the most interesting for me was the fact that the main protagonist is a male. In all of the Cozy Mysteries I’ve read so far, this is the first one I’ve come by. I’m sure that there are others, but I do thin
Six Cats a Slayin' by Miranda James is the tenth novel in A Cat in the Stacks Mystery series. Charlie Harris has a new neighbor, Gerry Albritton who makes him uncomfortable with her overly flirtatious manor. Gerry is hosting a Christmas party to meet her new neighbors, and she sends over her assistant to make sure Charlie will be attending. Charlie will attend if his girlfriend, Helen Louise Brady can be on his arm (protection). Christmas is approaching, and it is Charlie’s first one as a grandf ...more

Miranda James kept me enthralled as usual! A lovely book from one of my favorite authors! ‘Six Cats’, a murder, family issues and ‘Diesel’ make for a good read!
I tried to hold off. I really did. But, it's so hard to wait until after Halloween to read books set at Christmas when they're showing up in the mail. It was impossible to resist the cover of Miranda James' latest Cat in the Stacks mystery, Six Cats a Slayin'. So, before the book review, kudos to Dan Craig, the artist who did the cover art. Once in a while, I think it's appropriate to recognize the cover artist.

This is the tenth installment in this series. I have read every prior book but this book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. A new resident in Charlie Harris' neighborhood decides to host an open house/Christmas party. She says that she is returning to her hometown of Athena and is a member of a prominent family. However, elements of her story just aren't adding up. She collapses and dies at her own party. When Charlie looks into her background, there are more questions than answers. Are these ques ...more

In Six Cats A Slayin’, the latest book by Miranda James, Charlie Harris is getting ready for Christmas when he opens the door and finds a box filled with five kittens. The box contains a note in a child’s scrawl that “he” was going to kill the kittens, so they needed protection. Filled with compassion, Charlie takes in the kittens, and his boarder sheriff’s deputy Haskell, builds a large crate to keep all five kittens. Another cozy Charlie/Diesel tale by author Miranda James, Six Cats a Slayin' takes place at Christmastime, when all is not calm and bright in the small college town of Athena, Mississippi. Charlie and Diesel must investigate the murder of their neighbor, which seems to be tied to a secret long buried, and take care of 5 abandoned kittens that were left on their doorstep. Very charming, as usual, and perfect for the holidays (or anytime!). 5 stars!

Another cute book with my favorite Maine Coon, Diesel. Loved the kittens, found the mystery mildly interesting. One thing I did notice this time around was the amount of praying done by Charlie and the other characters. I don't mind a bit of religion, but it was much more prominent this time around. Maybe because it's set at Christmas?

An enjoyable Christmas story about Charlie and his cat Diesel. He is trying to show good will to his new nosy neighbor and prepare for his first Christmas as a grandfather. He finds a box of kittens on his doorstep and takes them in. Charlie agrees to go to his new neighbor’s party reluctantly and then has to dig into her past when she is murdered at her party. He is also worried about his daughter-in-law and her problems after having a baby.

I liked this one much better than the last two. Charlie did more sleuthing, and although the cat (s) were prominent, Diesel didn't overwhelm the story. I was a little let down by the abrupt way the end of the murder investigation was announced, and I would have liked to be shown rather than just told about the scene where Charlie permanently acquires a new member of the family, but overall this was an enjoyable read. I look forward to future feline developments in the next book in this series.

I found this as an audiobook. I had never read any of the first in series. It was a good cozy but since I have not read the others I did not know that Charley was a man. It confused me because the book was read by a woman. Just saying. CHarley could be a woman's name as well. Liked it and will now go back and read the first ones

Even though it still feels too early to talk about the Xmas holidays, this was still the perfect book for this week. Why? Because just like Charlie Harris, we got a kitten this week. But we got just the one, while Charlie found five little ones on his and Diesel’s doorstep.

If our two boys turn out to be half the cat-uncle-babysitter that Diesel does, we’ll be very happy. Also totally astonished.

Princess Fuzzypants here: Anyone who reads my reviews knows how much I love the Cats in the Stacks series. I fell paw over tail in love with Diesel from a the first book. The fact that he is also a Maine Coon obviously has nothing at all to do with it. He just happens to be an amazing and handsome hunk of a kitty and with his human, Charlie, has managed to charm both the town of Athena, where the stories are set, and the reading public, meow included.

It’s nearly Christmas, and Charlie is gearing up to get ready for the holidays. This includes decorating, shopping, parties, and work. It normally doesn’t include a box of kittens on his doorstep, a new neighbor, and a murder, but that’s exactly what happened this year. Charlie has his own mystery to solve involving the kittens, even while Deputy Kanesha Berry is narrowing down the suspects to find the murderer. This time, in an unusual move, she enlists Charlie’s help instead of telling him to ...more

Days before Christmas, Charlie Harris finds a box containing 5 kittens on his doorstep. Diesel is quite taken with them and appoints himself supervisor of the little family. The most rambunctious is named Ramses for his lively nature and his ability to get into trouble. Charlie tries to track down the origin of the kittens.

A new neighbour is aggressively flirty with Charlie and seemingly all men. Her Christmas display rivals that of Chevy Chase. She holds a neighbourhood party, and while all he
I still like Charlie Harris, the semi-retired librarian, his Maine coon cat Diesel, and his friends and family. But the plot in this latest series entry includes such mysteries as who left the box of five kittens at Charlie's doorstep, will Charlie's daughter-in-law accept help with her infant daughter before she has a breakdown, and who killed the assertive, vulgar woman who just bought the house across the street. Charlie doesn't want to mess with another murder, especially right before Christ ...more

Loved it! This was another wonderful book in the Cat in the Stacks series!

I love reading about Charlie and Diesel. In this book, not only does Charlie have to figure out where the 5 sweet kitties left on his doorstep came from, but his overly friendly neighbor is killed at her own Christmas party. Charlie is left with a lot of questions and not a whole lot of answers on both fronts but, he does find clues that lead him to the solutions.

This is such a great series and I honestly can't wait to rea

Excellent addition to the Cat in the Stacks series.

It's Christmas in Athena, Georgia. Charlie has both a new neighbour and a box of kittens dumped on his doorstep. Both will provide him with a mystery, but only one will result in murder.

A much better book than the last one, "Six Cats a Slayin'" returns the series to its previous form.

The book also handles a topic getting much airing in the USA. I can't say what without massively spoiling the book, but it is handled with sensitivity and grace.

Another delightful Cat in the Stacks book, with the added bonus mystery of six kittens. The overall murder mystery is quite interesting and engaging.

While the mysteries in this series are somewhat mild, what I love most is the day-to-day goings on in Charlie's life. All the characters are interesting, including everyone's favorite cat, Diesel.

SIX CATS A SLAYIN' is sure to please fans of Charlie and Diesel. As always, the book is as much about the characters and life in Athena as it is about the mystery. Charlie finds himself dealing with the death of a neighbor and a litter of abandoned kittens. Full of family endearment and twisty murder mystery. Recommended.
