Victor Selo had blown up his life. A wannabe rock star turned tech savant, he’d wagered his Silicon Valley executive position on a corporate inside straight and lost. Having security escort him out of the building was the best thing that happened to him that day. The rest left him in the hospital, broken, broke, and with no prospects. That’s when a shadowy stranger with qu ...more

The very apt title of this novel, “From Nothing” is a nod to the Billy Preston song lyrics, “Nothing From Nothing Leaves Nothing”. Like another famous Preston song question, “Will it go round in circles?”, Ken Goldstein has a compelling story to tell— about breaking out of life’s grooves/habits/ruts we all wallow in, the search for faith, and how his downtrodden character, Victor, finally finds himself.

Although billed as a story about technology, that is simply the backdrop to the re

This book captured me from the beginning. I couldn't put it down, and like every great book I've read, I was sad to say goodbye to the characters at the conclusion. This is a fascinating adventure thriller especially for those who are fascinated by what goes on inside large tech companies, love music and want to go behind the curtain into the life of a musician performing in a band. All of Ken's books take me on a great ride, make me think, surprise me and teach me a few things. This is the most ...more

A page turner from beginning to end. If you are a musician or a wannabe musician, an entrepreneur or a wannabe entrepreneur, a manager or a wannabe manager, or anyone else, it's a must read!

From Nothing by Ken Goldstein is unlike any novel I have read. It carries so much punch and intrigue that I could not put it down. The tale carries me through one man's journey from a corporate world to the lifestyle of a rock star. This book shows what happens when the main character rolls like a dice on a gambling table. The chances are fifty-fifty and the risks are high. An opportunity of taking a new road to life comes with consequences. But this character keeps rolling; making the best with ...more

From the beginning this book had me hooked. Victor Selo, a software developer and formidable boss to some pretty awesome employees, has a passion for something other than software: Rock music! Selo faces tough decisions that may lead to dire consequences but knows he is surrounded by great people who inspire him and stand by him. This page-turner details corruption in Silicon Valley and Selo's journey through his life as a tech guru and ambitious musician. But just like any other great story, li ...more

I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read, enjoys music, has an interest in the world of business and technology, likes a good mystery story, believes in love, and understands the importance of healing old wounds. This book works on all these levels. I thought I'd give it a quick look see, but found I wanted to read a little more each night before I went to bed. Then I couldn't put it down. And finally I wanted to begin reading it again after I finished. Plus, there are some twists and u ...more

Victor Selo’s life has bombed out and recovered twice. After the first time when he’s at rock bottom, he turns to playing lead and support guitar in bar bands. It’s popular music, especially “oldies but goodies” that most baby boomers loved and still love. Now after multiple years working in the tech business in Silicon Valley, in which he and his buddies devise a way to create apps for people to buy individual song hits. Technology develops so rapidly that he knows the company has to expand and ...more

As I thoroughly enjoyed the messy ride through Silicon Valley of Ken Goldstein’s This is Rage (read my review), which I recommend if you haven’t picked it up, I was pleased to get an ARC of his new book From Nothing.

From Nothing is many things - the book’s title, the rags-to-riches-to rags story of Victor Selo, a self-made success grown from foster homes to third-rate rock singer to Silicon Valley

Book Review: "From Nothing: A Novel of Technology, Bar Music, and Redemption" by Ken Goldstein

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that made me sleep deprived, but honestly, I could not put this book down. I was delighted by the action, suspense, conflicts and the twists that kept me turning the page through the night into dawn.

The story’s hero, Victor Selo, is complicated, damaged (physically and emotionally), loveable and hate-able, musician and visionary, and I

From Nothing: A novel of technology, bar music and redemption
By Ken Goldstein

When board room antics force Victor Selo to re-evaluate his life, he finds himself going back to his roots. He started out in music trying to find his big break when an opportunity fell into his lap. Silicon Valley called offering him an executive position. When faced with a fork in his life he took the less risky path with

As a software developer and wannabe musician for most of my life, I knew this book would speak to me before I even opened it. And did it ever! I was immediately engrossed with the main character who seemed eerily familiar. The story grabs you and pulls you right in. It's one of those books where you can't stop at the end of a chapter. You have to start the next chapter to see what direction things are going in, and hope there's at least a slight lull to let you resume your real life for a while. ...more

In "From Nothing" , author Ken Goldstein deftly maneuvers from music super-fan to tech business insider and back again, while masterfully crafting a page-turning tale of dirty tech deals gone wrong, bar cover band redemption, and man's eternal quest for God and his place in a universe predicated on chaos.

If you are a music fan, especially of live music and the golden age of Classic Rock, then you will love how Goldstein references and places musical gems along the way as we accompany

Ken Goldstein’s “From Nothing” surprises and touches. I loved “From Nothing” which tells the story of Victor on his transformational journey of redemption in the worlds of high tech and rock and roll. Ken creates that unique inventive mash up of corporate business and high tech apps along with his passions for classic rock and baseball. Consequently, his book has a deeply personal feel and purpose. His narrative voice is both self-aware and compassionate.

“From Nothing” is poignantly about retir

"From Nothing: A Novel of Technology, Bar Music, and Redemption" by Ken Goldstein...I read an early draft of this book: I couldn't put it down and read into the night. It's a great tale about a fellow, Victor Selo, a software developer who like so many other developers has another passion...Rock. But this is the story of decisions and consequences that often lead to disastrous results for Victor as well as those he comes into contact with. Do business and art mix?

Victor Selo is a man whose pass

From Nothing was difficult for me to start, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. It's a fascinating tale of corruption in Silicon Valley, the realities of taking a leap of faith in the music industry, but mostly, it's the story of a solid human being who, in spite of his challenged background, steers a path of truth amidst all the wreckage of business and often the people around him. His background provides resilience and a sense of loyalty to those who stand by him. I will say, thoug ...more

This was a first reads giveaway. It was an okay read- not great, but not horrible. The writing was decent, as was the storyline, but I struggled to really get into the book. Maybe if I had read it a different time I may have enjoyed it better. I could easily recommend it for the person looking needing a filler book- those waiting on a sequel or who just need something to read to fill in a gap between books.

Amazing read from start to finish. Ken Goldstein does it again with his third book. Kept me completely engaged till all hours of the night. The story takes you through an unexpected journey, from the tech world, to music entertainment. Mr. Goldstien does a superb job with character building, holding your attention at all time. I had a very hard time putting the book down. A novel that won't disappoint!

Wow! “From Nothing” is a whirlwind page turner. Like a finely crafted song, it’s got a melody that won’t let go from the opening note to the closing chorus.

Don’t let the title fool you, FROM NOTHING is more than just an homage to tech and rock ‘n’ roll. Goldstein weaves a taut thriller and male fantasy genre—an invention all his own—that will leave you wanting more. From the tech scenes in Marin County to the rock ‘n’ roll scenes in Las Vegas and New York City, Goldstein expertly captures the mood in the rhythm of places that seem familiar yet disorienting, like a good/bad dream. I highly recommend FROM NOTHING as a read.

Surprised I finished it.

I did not care for this book at all. Hardly about Silicon Valley, as it takes place in Mill Valley and Las Vegas. There was a tremendous amount of repetition. (Sinthia with an S etc.). Also
the main character’s interest in god was off-putting. Would not recommend this book to anyone else. Sorry.
