Little did he know the dancing beauty he saw and craved was a feisty Englishwoman fleeing the wrath of the man whose home she destroyed after he destroyed her dreams.

This book was filled with excitement and suspense. I really loved our hero, Laird Symon Grant. He was so sweet and so honorable – not to mention handsome and strong. As for the heroine, Athena, I just never warmed up to her. I did like her better toward the end, but for most of the book, I just wanted to knock her on her noggin and ask her what was wrong with her. I also have to wonder when, where and how doing absolutely stupid things became

Between a Highlander and a Hard Place is book 5 in the Highland Weddings series. This is the story of Symon Grant and Athena Trappes. I have read the other books in this series but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Athena thought herself in love and on the edge of getting married but then that man turned mean and said he was going to make her his mistress. Athena ran away from him which lead her to Symon. Symon was a widower who needs to marry for his clan and to bui

I felt really sorry for Athena, the heroine of this story. Fleeing London disguised as a boy because her other options were unpalatable at best (become a wealthy man’s mistress or go to jail for setting fire to his house when he attacked her) she keeps ending up in dreadful situations caused by most of the men around her behaving like complete asshats. It’s no wonder she’s had an absolute gutful of being pushed around and told what to do when she runs across Symon, Laird Grant, who saw her danci ...more

Between a Highlander and a Hard Place is a historical romance but it also has historical figures that are a part of the main plot. I did find this rather interesting but at the same time I actually felt that it took away from the story. The romance, which was the main focus, had less time to develop in order to give space for the historical characters and the parts that they play but without there being any true development of the historical characters. I also felt that the story itself was a li ...more

Between a Highlander and a Hard Place is the 5th installment of the Highland Weddings and can easily be read as a standalone without any confusion had by a new reader.

A quick, yet highly entertaining marriage of necessity romantic adventure filled with danger, excitement and passion.... enjoyed this visit to the highlands.

Athena Trappes is high spirited and enraged when the man she believes she loves only wants her for a bit of side play (burning his things might have been a bit rash).... now she is seeking safety in the wilds of Scotland. Highland Laird Symon Grant lost his wife long ago and is being pressured by the clan to find another. Loved the witty ba

There’s not much better than a highland romance. I love the strong women who stand up to and challenge the burly Scottish laird. And there’s nothing sexier than a Scottish brogue and a kilt that makes you wish for a stiff breeze. Aside from those physical elements, what I love most is the loyalty and duty to clan in these stories. Between a Highlander and a Hard Place has all that and more wrapped up in a fast-paced, action packed historical romance.

I am really starting to hate the Edinburgh court and those dang lowlanders! Curse them all to hell! There is some hate from the previous books (you should read them and curse the court too).

To the book. Athena is English. She lives with her goldsmith uncle. A nobleman said he would marry her and she likes him. And obviously something is to go wrong because how else would a handsome Scot have her. That English nobleman, oh how I cursed his name and still did when I finished the book. But Athena i

Mary Wine's Highland Wedding series has been a consistently entertaining historical romance series for me. I've been enjoying these books, these characters, and the setting tremendously. I'm always eager to pick up a new book with these books. Between a Highlander and a Hard Place was one I certainly could not miss, especially with that stunning cover. While I enjoyed my time with this 5th book, I have to admit that the books are starting to all blend together for me as they all have a very simi

If the title alone does not draw you in, the storyline will. This is the first book I have read by Mary Wine and now I only want to read more!! The heroine Athena Trappes is a very high spirited lady who, when angry can be wrath itself! She is in love (or imagines she is) and is thinking she will marry Galwell, but he only wants her in his bed. She sets fire to his things and runs as fast as she can to the wilds of Scotland. She dresses as a boy to dodge Galwell if he tries to find her and evade ...more

Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) Well this had a lot of stuff going on, I mean a lot and then the ending you could consider it a cliff-hanger. Athena is broken hearted because the guy she thought she was supposed to marry really did not want to marry her but have her as a mistress. While fleeing she sees Symon who she is captivated by and vice versa. Symon is a widower and he needs to get married and have an heir but he is also reluctant to get married again but knows he has to for ...more

Excellent series of books by Mary Wine .
Highland adventures , with humour , amazing backdrops, wonderful plots , a couple of bad guys , and even more than a couple of highland hero’s , all mixed up with some feisty heroines , this is what makes a highland hit .
It’s great to be able to pick up a book and know your going to enjoy it just from the first page .
Recommended to all fans and first timers of this author.

At times Symon likes to tell his woman what he has planned, “I’m going to toss yer skirts, sweet Athena,” he promised her with a wicked gleam in his eyes. “And once I satisfy ye, I am going to strip ye bare and love ye until ye have no more strength to argue with me.” Symon thinks of his woman's needs, “get into bed and stay there, lass. I’ll be back in just a wee bit. Need to shave this beard off before I come near ye, or I’ll scratch yer tender skin.” I liked this book, I loved Symon.

Highland Wedding series continues with Laird Symon Grant's happily ever after and Athena, a girl that unexpectedly stole his heart.

The fast pace of this story, its villain and especially the hero, are what made this story worth the reading.

Hope you get it!

This was a great introduction book of Mary Wine and I will definitely be reading more romances from her.
Athena is from a modest back ground who has her heart set on Galwell, a nobleman with the Queen's favor. After finding out he was using the idea of a betrothal as a way to instead black mail her into being his mistress, she rebels by tipping over a candle and lighting his house on fire!
To escape the fate of imprisonment or being Galwell's mistress, she disguises herself and flees North.

A brawny highlander in a kilt comes to the rescue of a young woman without considering the consequences. He acted from his heart not his head. What is he going to do with a woman, obviously a respectable one, out in the Scottish wilds. Darn himself and his honourable ways. Now he'll have to go out of his way to return her to her family.

I was hooked from that point, or actually, from the point I read he was wearing a kilt.

The young lady is Athena Trapps, an English woman who is trying to escape a

My Thoughts
Once again, I have found a new author to fangirl over thanks to NetGalley.  Mary Wine created something beautiful with this book.  Beyond the plot and sizzling romance, she added a touch of real history that I loved!  You can tell that she did her research for this book.  From the chill of the highlands to the drafty corridors of the Laird's keep to the hearty food that they ate, I was able to see it all and experienc

Highland Wedding #5, A quick fun read that can be read as a standalone. The ending does have a bit of a teaser for the next book but everything involving Athena and Symon story is concluded. This is only my second Mary Wine book but I enjoyed this one much more than the other. The story was good, the characters were likable and I liked how they interacted with each other. You could tell this is part of a series but the previous characters didn't play an active role in the story.

I read a lot of historical romance and I am familiar with works of what feels like all of the well-established authors, but I have never even heard of Mary Wine.

The storytelling in Between a Highlander and a Hard Place is quite unique for the genre. Historical figures and events really come into play in this novel. However, this is one of my pet peeves in historical romances. Every time king or queen

Another great Scottish romance by Mary Wine! I have read and thoroughly enjoyed all of her Scottish Romances. Her style of writing is very descriptive and provides clear visual images of the characters, castle-life, and the beauty of the Scottish countryside. She manages to weave together historical facts with romance, resulting in exciting adventures! Between a Highlander and a Hard Place
