Germain Grisez was a French-American philosopher and a prominent and influential Catholic moral theologian. Grisez's lengthy masterpiece is his three-volume Way of the Lord Jesus.

The book argues for a recovery of the lively sense of God's personal call to each man and woman as a result of Christian baptism. All Christians in the early Church had this sense, of being personally consecrated (set aside) for God and his special plan, simply by being a Christian. Over time this lively sense was front-loaded onto those who were "called" to be priests and religious, but the sense that all people, lay and cleric, had a unique and unrepeatable role to play in carrying out God's redemptive plan in the universe was lost. It was recovered by Vatican II's teaching on the universal call to holiness. This book, taking Vatican II as its starting point, develops the idea of personal vocation as it is found in sacred scripture and Christian theology and lays out a beautiful and whole (but not comprehensive) account. I recommend it to anyone who is serious about living a Christian life.
