Marceline Smith is a kawaii illustrator and blogger based on the West Coast of Scotland.
Growing up surrounded by cute characters like Miffy, Hello Kitty and Pikachu, Marceline was soon dreaming of visiting Japan. Her first trip there in 2006 filled her with a love for kawaii characters, colourful design and food with faces and she has returned 3 times to explore the country further.
Having graduated with a degree in Fine Art, Marceline eventually quit her job in corporate web design to create her own line of kawaii character goods as Asking For Trouble, co-found popular daily kawaii blog Super Cute Kawaii and self-publish guides to kawaii shopping and sightseeing in Japan.
Inspired by the riot grrls of the 1990s Marceline has been self-publishing her own zines since she was a teenager on subjects from music and video games to travel guides and comics. She self-published her first paperback book in 2011 and has another Japan book in progress.
Her hobbies include sewing, astronomy, playing Nintendo, visiting botanic gardens, eating cake, collecting kawaii stationery and plush, writing lists and reading books of course!
Not surprisingly this book *is* super cute! Even the feel, design, and aesthetics of the physical book are kawaii (the puffy cover is great!). Lots of cute illustrations and photos, it includes history, popular characters, style guides, DIYs, recipes, shopping locations (in store and online), and more! A fun pick for kawaii fans :) *I do work for SCK but bought the book on my own*
Biased opinion here since I work for SCK but I want to say this book is a great little book for anyone into the kawaii lifestyle. Lots of color, photos, easy DIYs, inspo and more, tucked between a puffy cover. This would make a cute gift or a great pick me up.
I chose this book for the serotonin boost, and it delivered that and more. Consider this a one-stop primer for anyone just getting into all things kawaii. It gives a competent overview of the background, the characters, the looks, and even includes crafts and recipes. The book includes shopping and style resources - including some outside of Japan.
I genuinely love everything about this and found myself smiling through the entire read. Now, off to make a donut garland.
Very easy to read. Basically a guide to visit Japan so I read and took note on where to go, what to eat. Worth reading for anyone who like cute stuffs.
