Cadogan Guides Scotland

Rate this book
Scotland has always been a popular destination with American visitors, who are attracted by the dramatic scenery, warm hospitality, the finest malt whiskies, and world-renowned golf courses. Many also come to trace ancestors and to investigate the history and traditions of the clans. Information on all this and more can be found in this 7th edition of the Cadogan guide to Scotland. The author guides readers on a tour through Scotland region by region, taking in ghost-spotting at Glamis Castle, a stroll in the celestial gardens at Finlaystone, a chilly swim in the waters of Loch Ness, and a visit to the hill forts and stone circles of Perthshire. Fully revised and updated, the guide includes color photographs, comprehensive maps, travel information and the most up-to-the-minute listings, which will help readers choose between the splendor of Gleneagles and the warmth of a cozy bed and breakfast for a genuine local experience.

While this may be out of date in places, it is still a handy and informative guide to Scotland including its history, the importance and influence of the clans and the majesty of its mountains. It inlcudes hundreds of places to visit from castles and forts to manor houses and golf courses, and of course a whiskey distillery or three. Each place has a description about its history and why you should visit and leaves you with more options than you know what to do with. The layout is a little old fashioned which does make this a little harder to use as a travel guide when compared to modern guides but there are still plenty of maps and illustrations to guide you, you just need to flip back and for a bit.
