This book reminded me of the song "This Shirt," by Mary Chapin Carpenter,

about how a piece of clothing can hold all sorts of meanings--personal, cultural, family, dreams--over the years. I still have t shirts from decades ago, such as one from Joni Mitchell's "For the Roses" tour.

In this story, a girl wears a simple, ordinary dress and aspires to an extraordinary life, including travel. She eventually has that life and walking with her daughter, sees the

Billed as for 4-8 year olds but, having read it, I’d say it’s for the lower end of the scale. Would I have enjoyed this book as a child? I’m unsure. I can only hope the 6 year old I’m giving it to for Christmas enjoys it. It’s clearly meant to be read with an adult. A 6-7 year old child will manage most of the words with a little help. The illustrations are lovely and the printing is good quality.

Although immigration is part of the story in this fabulously illustrated picture book, the dress and its meaning to the central character are the bigger focus. Reminiscent of Patricia Polacco's The Keeping Quilt and Virginia Lee Burton's classic The Little House in that the story comes full circle.

This lovely, lovely immigration story is like a vase repaired with gold. It breaks your heart and fills it up at the same time. With illustrations that literally made me gasp, and a lyrical repetition that became ever more poignant, THE DRESS AND THE GIRL is a beautiful book to share with readers both young, old, and every age in between.

This poetic tale of love, loss, the passing of time and the power of memory is enhanced by exquisite illustrations in deep, rich tones. A sophisticated picture book, which beautifully demonstrates the capacity of treasured objects to evoke powerful emotions.

A beautiful book about a girl and the dress her mother made for her. When the girl travels to America, the dress is separated from the girl. The dress then decides to travel the world looking for the girl. The dress and the girl are eventually reunited and the dress is passed down to her daughter.

There is a little girl who wears a dress. The dress and the girl experience a lot together, like playing and exploring, until one day they travel to a new country together to find a better life. The dress and the girl get unexpectedly separated when getting off of the boat in their new county; the dress in a trunk and the girl moving on in her life's journey. One fortuitous day, several years in the future, the girl finds the dress in an unexpected place on an ordinary day with extraordinary joy ...more

Chad did a Tiny Takes review on this book months ago, but I can't find it at the moment. I'll update later. I *may* be crying a lot lately; nonetheless, this book choked me up as I read it aloud to myself. There's something about this notion that life doesn't always work out as planned, the nostalgia we experience when we're reminded of "home," and the pure joy of reunion that Andros just nailed.

A beautiful story of childhood, immigration and memory told from the perspective of both the young girl and her dress. It's a gem!

Thank you to @kidlitexchange and @abramskids for the free review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

A little girl and her dress, a dress made by her mother on a Greek Island, long to do something “singular, stunning or sensational. For something extraordinary.” Thus begins this lovely and charming story. It’s a familiar story for so many of us, that memory of a special dress you can’t forget. I have one of those I just can’t

A beautiful story but I got to say the illustrations really took it to another level for me.
Not sure what to think of this but the illustrations are magnificent. I need to find more illustrated by Vancouver illustrater Julie Morstad.

A different story of immigration; told from the point of view of a cherished object. A very heartwarming story. Anyone who has owned a favorite thing can relate to this tale.

Love the illustrations but the story has a few weak spots for me.

A girl and a dress have grand times together and dream of doing the sensational and extraordinary. When the girl's family immigrates from Europe to the USA, the dress is lost and goes around the world waiting to be found again.

I think everyone as a child has at least one article of clothing that they love and associate with the joys of childhood. This lost and found dress harkens to that nostalgia, that even little readers may identify with having outgrown several beloved articles of clothing by

The story is so so beautiful! I related so much to it, as my mom and aunts and grandma used to sew.

The story The Dress and the little girl is about a small girl and her most-liked dress. Both were entertained by uninvolved delights together on a Greek Island. The little girl and the dress did everything together; collect wildflowers, observe the beautiful sky and do tasks. The day they had to live the island arrived and had to relocate back to the United States. On the way back home, the girl is separated from the stock sustaining her dress, and she frightens her preferable dress is lost fore ...more

First sentence: Back when time seemed slower and life simpler, there was a dress. A dress much like many others, made for a girl by her mother. The dress loved the girl, and the girl loved the dress. They spent each day together, an ordinary girl wearing an ordinary dress. Every day the same story.

Premise/plot: The Dress and The Girl has two narrators: the girl and the dress. (One certainly expects to find the point of view of a girl in a book--a picture book. But one does not expect to ever rea
