I Want to be a Veterinarian is about a little boy and his dad who are waiting to see the doctor take care of their dog Gus. The doctor weighs the dog and does a full check up. The little boy loves animals and is very fascinated by Dr. Wells. The next day the boy goes to his horse riding class and sees a different kind of vet, the kind who takes care of horses. He goes on a class tip and goes to an aquarium and is amazed by the aquatic vet. He meets a wildlife vet and a cow vet. Throughout the book he meets different kinds of vets who work with different animals, different settings and he doesn’t know what one he wants to be but loves the idea of being a vet. There are many characters in this story like the boy, his dad, all the animals in the book, the different veterinarians and his classmates. The only people who talk are the boy and the vets so it is very easy to follow along. The text structure is basic and follows the boy through a couple of months where he goes many places to see animals and the multiple kinds of vets there are. The illustrations in his book are very cute and detailed. I admire how there are many kinds of races shown in the book as well. My favorite part was how the illustrator had different outfits to match each kind of animal doctor. Depending on what animal and setting the vet worked with reflected the outfit that the vet was wearing and that is great for children to see. I liked this book since there wasn’t a major theme. It's nice just to read a book for fun! I also enjoyed this because kids are introduced to many species of animals in a student friendly way! I could use this in my classroom and incorporate it into a lesson about animals. We can go back through the book and do some research on each animal that was shown and the students can discuss what one was their favorite and why. The students will then draw a picture of what animal they decided on and write some reasons to support the animal they picked. They can share in small groups of what they came up with to build their oral language as well as social skills.

There's more to being a veterinarian than most children likely expect.

Being a vet is actually different from working in a pet store. ;-)

For one thing, veterinarians help sick and hurt animals to feel better. These animal doctors need to be strong of stomach, not easily frightened by biting animals. These doctors must be practical problem solvers who know a ton of technical thing about animals's bodies.

* Beyond that, some vets work with very large animals.

* Other vets who work with animals in the wild.

* Still others work in laboratories.

Altogether, this book takes a FIVE STAR, idealistic look at what it could mean to become a professional at animal medicine.

I recommend this book for readers ages 3-5 years old, or preschool aged. This book follows a child who says he wants to be a veterinarian, when he grows up. And what the behind the scenes look at being a veterinarian. The book talks about what a veterinarian is, in case some readers don’t know what they are, or what they do.

2/16/2019 ~ I really enjoyed the doctor and police officer books in this series, but this one had less tension. I do appreciate the look at different types of vets, but I didn't feel pulled through the story.

Easy to read, excellent story and introduction to different veterinary positions! Very cute, recommended for those interested or looking for a career! You know those li'l ones always looking for a job LOL
