Moonshine & Magic is the introductory installation in the Southern Charms Mystery by Bella Falls.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Magic and mystery are only part of the Southern Charms of Honeysuckle Hollow…

Charli Goodwin doesn’t expect her homecoming to go without a hitch—after all, she skipped town, leaving her fiancé and family without a clue as to where she was going or why. Now that she’s ready to return home, she plans to lay low and sip some of her Nana’s sweet tea while the town gossips come out to play.

Unfortunately, on her first night back, Charli discovers the body of her crazy great-uncle (hey, everyone has one). She suddenly finds herself at the center of a mystery that threatens the very foundations of Honeysuckle Hollow and the safety of every paranormal citizen in it—starting with Charli herself.

With the clock ticking, will Charli’s special magical talents be enough to save not only the town but her own life?

Charlotte Goodwin, Charli to her friends and family, returns to her magically protected hometown of Honeysuckle Hollow after a year's absence. Now she is back and looking forward to some of her Nana's sweet tea and compassionate company.

Charli is a daring young lady, swept into the murder investigation of her Uncle Tipper. She discovers she enjoys assisting the intellectually appealing detective trying to solve this crime. But fate also keeps her in the path of a wolf-shifter, that captivates the attention of her wild side. She has a gang of friends, plus other witches, fairies, gnomes, trolls, vampires, and more, that readily assist her in her endeavors. But she is racing against time to escape the death curse she was accidentally hit with.

You will discover an engaging and well-paced mystery in the 'Southern Charms Cozy Mystery' paranormal series. I appreciate that it is clean and wholesome read and it is able to stand on its own.

Bella Falls delivers a winner with this series and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre!

As always my reviews are based off of my true and honest opinion and I do my best to keep all reviews spoiler free.

Charli Goodwin has returned to Honeysuckle Hollow. Her home, and sanctuary to all magic creatures. Here you will find vampires, werewolves, witches, and more. It's good to be home. Till Charli finds her Uncle Tipper dead. Due to Charli's powers of finding lost things, she assists Mason a detective in solving the murder. When Charli's life ends up in danger she has no choice but to solve it and she has to solve it fast.

description

This book was my very first introduction to the Cozy Mystery genre and I fell in love, with both this book, the series, and the genre. The characters are so loveable. Charli is strong and independant, plus she has two hotties interested. Her group of friends seem obviously close, although the crushes happening there seem a bit too juvenile for me. I'm a huge fan of paranormal books so I liked the presents of it here, but it wasn't a huge focus of the story, and I think with a small amount of tweaking this book could have easily been done without it. There was so much happening in this book that it never got boring. It's an easy to read, comfortable book, and I'm excited to see where this series leads.

Started out good but by the end I was kind of bored. I also guessed the killer (30 Pages in)as soon as they were introduced. But there were lots of paranormal creatures throughout this book you name a paranormal or magical creatures this book had it from unicorns to Goblins to fairies to the shapeshifters and shape shifting werewolves this book had it so if you're looking for a various cast of Supernatural a magical creatures this could be for you.

Charli's life isn't exactly going to plan - to put it mildly.

Forced to return to a place she didn't plan on going back to after skipping town with her fiance and leaving no forwarding address, Honesuckle Hollow is a magical town full of gossips, mysteries, and secrets.

She should have known better than to expect to slide into town without raising a ruckus, preferably unnoticed (that would never happen) and let the inevitable gossip die down while she lays low.

Ha! Fat chance of that when, on her first night, she finds the body of her, well, slightly crazy and most definitely alcoholic great-uncle. Now, along with everything else, she becomes a suspect in the investigation. Just great.

And if that's not enough to make her want to leave town again, good ol' Uncle Tipper accidentally put a death curse on her.

I really enjoyed this book, cover to cover. There are elements of fantasy included, which I always love, along with magic and a few other creatures who live in Honeysuckle Hollow. Even the name "Honeysuckle Hollow" draws me in. The characters in the town are varied, just like you'd find in most small towns. Everyone knows everyone else's business, and if they don't, they can make something up to keep things interesting.

This is book 1 of a series.

I can’t go wrong with a good cozy mystery! I can’t wait to see how Mason and Dash get along in the next book! I hope they build a good friendship. Charli and her Aunt are also awesome. 5 stars!

This book was more about "me. me. me. me", than the actual murder of her uncle. More about which guy she should pick then solving the case. It was somewhat humorous and that's what kept me going. Also, she's a witch. Why does the witches council forbid any magic? I mean, why write about witches if there's no magic to be seen. Stupid. Will not be reading the series.

This book made no sense.

I liked the idea of the book. I liked the setting of Honeysuckle Hollow and the idea of magical beings taking refuge in an isolated small town. I wanted to make a blanket out if this idea and snuggle up forever.

Unfortunately the world building was nil.

I can't tell you much about Hobeysuckle Hollow other than it was founded by witches some time ago (how long ago I don't really know) and it's inclusive to all magical beings but has some Harry Potter level predjudices against nonwitches. That's all I know. Can't tell you what it looks like or what it's like to live there. Is it like any other small town? Does it have it's own laws and customs? Is it self contained or do people come and go regularly? Like, do some witches live in the Hollow but commute to the non magical world for work? Are towns like this common place, or is Honeysuckle Hollow special? These are important questions. I can't answer them.

I can, however, tell you every damn southern stereotype the people of Honeysuckle Hollow indulge in because THAT'S the world building Bella Falls spent time on. I know nothing about Hobeysuckle Hollow but I know it's in the South, and I guess that's all some people care about.

I also know nothing about how magic works!!! Charli kept talking about "magical reserves" but didn't explain it. Like, does she recharge? Or is every witch only born with so much magic? And if that's the case, the implications are huge! Can the magical creatures who don't look human leave the hollow? Does every witch have their own talent, or is it rare? How do they learn the magic? I don't know if even half the witches performed magic in the book. Are some witches more powerful, and if so how does that work? What in the world is the difference between a wolf shifter and a warewolf in this universe? I can't tell you any of this, but I guess there were some hot guys?

And the guys. Ugh. One is a walking red flag that destroys Charli's father's precious motorcycle during a TEMPER TANTRUM, and the other is blazingly predjudice and just a down right terrible detective.

The mystery made no sense. I'm going to spoil everything below:

MC's favorote uncle dies. No one tells her at first and everyone just goes on like it's a party, but then a detective wants to talk to her about it and everyone is mad. Then everyone keeps daying he died of old age, but then why was the detecyive investigating? Them like 30% in they are finally like "BIG REVEAL! hE WAs MurDErED!" And then Charli has a death curse in her? But everyone knows she didn't do it, except for the people who randomly think she did it? And the wolf shifter kbows she had the death curae the whole time but didn't say anything? And he smelled it on her but not the mysterious stranger that's super shifty and is obviously the murderer? And then, the "detective" never formally interviews her, so never looks for the flask and the. They just decide he was poisoned without any proof. But then somehow Chatli figures there might be something with the will, do she foes looking for it, but the "detective" didn't do that IN A MURDER INVESTIGATION? But she's dying, but no one seems to take ot seriously and no one is trying to solve this murder by doing basic detective work, it's just sneaking around for no reason. Plus she adopts a cat even though she has days to live. Then she catches the murder and he does like 3 chapters of monolouging. Then the guys get all posseaive and alpha male over her, even though they just met her and there is nothing redeeming about this woman.

Seriosuly, I kept forgetting the MC was dying and I thi k the author kept forgetting, too.

This book is so bad. My eyeballs hurt from how many times I rolled them.

So much wasted potential because the world is cool and a lot of the dialogue is cute.

I listened to this book on audio and that may have influenced my opinions somewhat.

Pros:

This will be perfect for fans of Sookie Stackhouse. We get another sassy, southern magical person solving mysteries in her small town which is filled with heated politics from the different magical species.

This isn’t groundbreaking writing but it is fun. I would recommend it for anyone who likes paranormal romance or cozy mysteries and wants to expand into the other genre.

Cons:

Love triangle. I’m so over them. It’s not badly done I’m just so tired of them.

I struggled for the first chapter to adjust to the southern accent the narrator was using.

2019 grade B

This book started out so like the other fantasy cozy mysteries I have read, I wondered if some editor or publisher was curating them to make sure they fit the formula. But it diverged soon enough.

This story spent more time on the magic than the mystery. Very few leads were followed. Very few people were interviewed. No one ever really obtained any data from the few things they did investigate. The final solution was actually mentioned early in the story and if the protagonist had listened to all the people who wanted to talk to her, the solution would have happened much earlier. But then we would have missed all the delightful secondary characters.

The story concentrates on the protagonist's illness, her other problems, and developing secondary characters instead of the mystery. Since it is all from her POV, the illness does get a little tedious. And yet, I did not feel the need to speed read until the conclusion. At about 2/3 of the way through, my tentative grade was B-. But the final solution and epilogue worked well bumping it up to grade B.

Overall, it does follow the cozy mystery and fantasy southern charms genres properly. I enjoyed it, but am not sure I will read more unless I can read book two at a low price.

It is worth a read if you like the genre. I do.

This was a nice start to a world of paranormal mystery. It has well thought out characters, the mystery was good and there was hidden humor too. I liked the story idea and enjoyed the ook into this new world. Now that mystery has been solved I'm looking forward to see what happens next. Who she ends up falling for and what other creatures we might meet.

I enjoy a bit of paranormal magic and romance, but I need it mixed with a healthy dose of mystery, danger, and adventure before it appeals. I spotted this audiobook in the library and figured I would give it a try.

Moonshine & Magic is way too much Southern sweet tea and charm, and way too little mystery and kick-ass for my taste. I did not like the narration by Johanna Parker. I thought her southern accent was annoying and overdone, to the point where it came off as fake. No offense to Bella Falls fans, but not for me.

As a cozy mystery, it's everything you need. And it was nice to finally read a cozy mystery that didn't have a fatphobic comment or three. HOWEVER I hated the damned audiobook. The southern accent was somewhere in the middle of the triangle of distracting, cartoonish, and offensive. Like, what backwoods cartoon villain did she study to get those inflections and warbles? I had to speed up the book until it was fast enough the accents were kinda blurred out just to get through it.

Check out my review at Disorderly Daydreams Blog

This was such a fun, quick, supernatural assortment of delights. Bella Falls writes a specific type of book and while I love the idea of Cozy Mysteries, I haven't found a ton that I've fallen in love with. However, Moonshine & Magic ended up being a wonderful and surprising treat for me.

Moonshine & Magic by Bella Falls takes place in Honeysuckle Hollow, where southern charm, sweet tea, and supernatural creatures reside. Our protagonist Charli is returning home after a not-so-graceful-exit a few years prior. She immediately finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery that involves her uncle Tipper. While investigating the murder alongside the interesting Detective Mason, she interacts with many characters from town, including vampires, werewolves, other witches, and shapeshifters, but also faces the effects of a curse!

This story is lighthearted, appropriate for all ages, and just down right wholesome. There are no real twists and the story is not overly complicated. There's nothing directly violent or any major triggers to look out for.

I listened to this on audiobook and at first, I had a difficult time separating the narrator's voice from another southern character I love: Sookie Stackhouse. Yep, that's right, Johanna Parker narrates the Southern Charms Cozy Mysteries series. But once I got it into my head that Charlie =/= Sookie, the story really started to take off. And, did you know that Bella Falls is self-published? She now has 10 books under her belt! I suggest checking her out if you enjoy paranormal/supernatural cozy mysteries.

3.5*

It’s that weird time where it’s coming up end of summer and fall is around the corner, but JUST not here yet and I’ve been craving some mysteries and witchy themed books so this seemed like a perfect combo.

This wasn’t my favorite, but I definitely enjoyed it enough to continue the series. This is a cute southern town filled with magical beings from witches, trolls, vampires and fairies, all mixed with a murder mystery. It’s such a cute, small town and I love the typical cozy mystery settings. There’s a possible move triangle brewing, a main character that always ends up investigating murders—albeit this one is a witch—and a great cast of characters. Definitely a good and quick story to pick up for any cozy mystery lovers and perfect for fall time.

Ah, nothing quite says welcome home like a death curse.

deathcurse

An interesting concept, that quickly got bogged down by small town gossip and grudges It just seemed to pull away from the story at times and didn't always add something of interest to what was going on. I did enjoy the interactions between Charli, Dash, and Msson. That and a few of the other characters, Beau and Gossamer specifically have me interested enough to continue on with the series. Well, that and I'm a sucker for all things paranormal.

I really liked this! It was a mix of Heather Blake's Wishcraft series and Barbara Bretton's Sugar Maple series. I liked Charli and her family (except for her aunt) and while the story wasn't twisty and turny it was entertaining and fun.
