EXCERPT: . . . once he had fully comprehended what was said and what was happening, (he) was about to protest again but the unseen, first flush of fluid had hit him in the face. His vision suddenly blurred and turned an opaque yellow as the acid started to destroy his eyes. It filled his mouth, numbing and swelling his tongue. What suddenly became apparent was the smell, the smell he could not identify but in fact was the stench of melting flesh. All that could be heard was a gurgled scream as h ...more

I love the Cyril Bennett series by Malcolm Hollingdrake and was looking forward to reading this new addition to the series and I wasn’t disappointed.

Small, numbered wooden crosses are turning up all over the area with a small bag of red hair attached what do they mean? When bodies start turning up with more red hair Cyril and his team start hunting for more clues.

There is a new addition to the team, April, who is immediately a significant addition when it becomes clear her biblical knowledge is

Crossed Out is a riveting addition to the DCI Bennett series. Although 6th in the series, this can easily be read as a stand alone.

When a house crumples into a sinkhole, Bennett and his team are called out to investigate when a body is found. They also find a number of old crosses, each one numbered.

DC April Richmond is introduced as a new team member and impresses them all with her knowledge of all things biblical. Due to her assistance, the team makes a remarkable discovery.

Crossed Out is the sixth book in the gripping DCI Cyril Bennett crime series. I think it would be beneficial to have at least read the last two books in the series though the author gives just enough for anyone wanting to jump straight in but as it’s a fabulous series, I do recommend reading them all.

When I first met Cyril, the author didn’t give to much away about who he is or his past. As the books have gone along, the author kind of drip feeds us little bits so we are still left knowing that

Now, it’s been a while since I started and finished a book within the same day but Crossed Out had me hooked and I couldn’t put it down which is how I finished this gripping story within a day.

Crossed Out had me intrigued from the prologue and it was great to be back in DCI Bennett’s world once more. I must mention that this is book six in the DCI Bennett series and it does make references to the previous books in the series so they are best read in order. The story is written well, thrilling a

DCI Cyril Bennett and DS David Owen are back for another murder mystery in Crossed Out – there are crosses found and (scarlet) hair – messages to the world but from whom? When the first murdered body is found, the team know they will have their hands full to find the killer!

The more that you read a series and the more you expect of the author to come up with something that will welcome you like an old friend and Malcolm Hollingdrake does just that. As each book comes along, this is book six, I have begun to recognise the little traits that make all of the characters individual and that is how it is with DCI Cyril Bennett and DS David Owen. I feel that I know a little more how their minds work as a team and on their own but we all have secrets and pasts, as each new ...more

When a book starts with missing persons, acid attacks, drugs and bodies, you know you’re in for a tangled tale. Cyril, his team augmented this time by a new girl, April, have their work cut out. April, as Cyril advises, occasionally goes with her gut. He is happy to follow it. His own past is further explored, and his relationship with Dr Pritchett deepens. Altogether, there’s a huge lot going on in here.

I really enjoyed this story. When you think you know what’s going on you’re thrown a curve-b

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest instalment of the Cyril Bennett series, the sixth one. I have read all of them and it is always nice to read a series in order, but this book can easily be read as a standalone too, if need be.

This is a book with quite a complex plot and it sees Cyril and Owen trying to figure out the meaning of the crosses which keep on turning up on their patch, as well as the dead bodies. There is a connection, but they are not sure what it is. Their new colleague, April Rich

It was brilliant to find that the author was giving us an insight into Cyril and his past and it endeared him to me even more. He is a very straight no nonsense character but he also has a soft side and from the descriptions of his early life you can begin to understand why. Owen still has a major part to play in the investigations and a new character April has been introduced. I love Harrogate and the surrounding area as the setting for the books which are well written with much thought going i ...more

I am a massive fan of this author's books so I was really excited when the book arrived on my Kindle and I couldn't wait to get stuck in to see what Cyril and his team were up to in this latest book.

Cyril and Owen are still my favourite characters but I really enjoyed the introduction of April to the team and how they have all developed as she settled in to the team. The plot for this one was quite complex but to get it to work as well as it does there mu

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bloodhound Books for a review copy of Crossed Out, the sixth novel to feature DCI Cyril Bennett of the Harrogate police.

It's a busy time at Harrogate CID as the team deal with bones uncovered by a sinkhole in Ripon, a spate of remembrance crosses with dyed red hair attached to them and a murder. As they start to investigate they uncover more and more confusing links and clues.

I thoroughly enjoyed Crossed Out which has an interesting plot and an inviting style

After a house collapses due to subsidence, a body is discovered. And old weathered Remembrance Crosses are being found all around Harrogate. Each one is numbered and comes with a little something extra. There seems to be some religious connotation and the team gets help from DC April Richmond who’s biblical knowledge is seriously impressive. How are these things connected though? Meanwhile, Cyril is also forced to confront his past after receiving a letter and Shakti is trying to find a missing ...more

This is the first DCI Bennett book that I’ve read and I really enjoyed it.
The storyline kept me gripped and I really like DCI Bennett and Owen.
They are tasked with finding out who is leaving small crosses attached to bags of red hair at different locations and also have to link this to murders that have taken place.
There are quite a lot of other characters in this book which became a bit confusing at times but it all came together in the end.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books for giving me the oppor

For me the best book in the series...beautifully written...and a superb read

I have been on Cyril's journey since the beginning.. From the first book I have watched as the characters have developed, changed ,grown. Each book in the series brings more changes including the new member of the team April Richond, bright enthusiastic and clever. In this book there is a killer that has had a terrible journey...and leaves behind a signature at the scene...in different parts of the city...Cyril is going t

Wow and Wow again.
This has all the Hollingdrake traits I love for this series.
A woven plot that keeps you guessing.
Bennett and Owen are back and stronger than ever.
A new character that fits in perfectly.
Twisted crimes with enough detail, without information overload.
This series really does go from strength to strength and we find out a bit more about Bennett which is just what was required at this point of the series.
A faultless read, that I cannot recommend highly enough.

Once again we meet DCI Cyril Bennett and his team , plus new member April Richmond.. The story begins with a collapsed house in Ripon and the discovery of a dead body in the debris. In Harrogate, remembrance crosses are appearing on the Stray. with attachments. As if this isn't enough to contend with for DCI Bennett, he also has personal issues to deal with.. This is the 6th book in this superb series.. This is not a fast paced thriller but a splendid well crafted, work of art., which is to be s ...more

This is the 6th book in the DCI Bennett series, and it just keeps getting better. While it starts off with a sink hole in Ripon, and the discovery of the body but from there it gets much more complicated. Wooden crosses are being found all over town, these would not be noteworthy but for the fact that each cross has a small bag of red hair attached. Link this to a religious nut that appears to have disappeared and reappeared, a troubled young girl, and a rash of attacks, and you've got a mystery ...more

I've read all of Malcolm Hollingdrakes books.
I always look forward to them as I know I am going to be reading a book I cant put down.
What I particularly like about these books are the characters. In each one we learn more about them.
In "Crossed Out" we are introduced to DC April Richmond. She seems to be a perfect addition to the team.
I love this series and look forward to the next.

What can I say, this is one book I’m not quite sure I want to read again. Yes, it’s harsh but I really don’t get the story. It’s not a fast read, but it’s also a bit too nice for a crime and mystery genre. The story started with discovery of several remembrance crosses around the town, with a plastic bag attached to

This the sixth book in the DCI Bennett series and it is a gripping crime thriller with a well thought out plot.
Following the collapse of a house, into a sinkhole, a body is discovered.
An ex-con Gideon Fletcher, who apparently found god, is walking around Harrogate handing out leaflets with religious texts.
A series of old Remembrance Crosses start to turn up, each has a number marked on them.
As more bodies appear, along with the crosses, Bennett and his team are sure there is a connection, they

It’s a bit like a gruesome treasure hunt in Harrogate. Small crosses each with a fishing type line attached to a bag of dyed hair keep being found. Then bones are discovered when a house almost falls into a sinkhole. DCI Bennett and his team have got their hands full. Three people who are on the missing list have a connection via DNA to the bags found. Cyril is a very likeable character and Malcolm always gives enough background to provide extra interest without distracting from the main plot. w ...more

I’m already a convert when it comes to Malcolm Hollingdrake’s work. Crossed out is the third book I’ve read by him. It’s the sixth in the DCI Bennett series and I’m gradually working my way through the collection in no particular order. It hasn’t spoilt my enjoyment as they can be read as stand-alone books. As far as mysterious crime thrillers go, this book has it all; a dead body turning up in a sinkhole, enigmatic numbered crosses tied to plastic bags containing dyed red hair, acid attacks, th ...more

New to me author so although there are parts of the book that follow a vein from other books in this series it's still a good stand alone read. The characters interact really well together even with a new recruit to the team. Will certainly keep an eye out for other books by this author a good addition to anyone's TBR pile.
