The wait is finally over

I fell in love with the Badger Hole Bar when I got the cookbook (a fun book with great recipes). After waiting for this book I was worried I would be disappointed. The only disappointment is that it came to an end. I am not disappointed with the story, the characters are strong and meld together nicely. Looking forward to the future releases.

Strange but excellent.....

This was one of the strangest books I've ever read but at the same time one of the best. The storyline is totally original to me. I've never read anything even simular to it. I'm more of a fantasy reader than a sci-fi reader so there maybe more like it out there and I just haven't came across them, that I can not know. A griefstricken man falls through a hole in the ground and ends up i a pocket dimension were he bonds with an entity that is part of a building. As they bond things just keep getting stranger and stranger. I can't say much more without getting into spoilers and that's something I will never do. But you will regret it if you miss it. Highly recommended.

This a review of all 3 books so far in this series:

Through the Badger Hole
Grand Opening
Fashion forward
There is also a cookbook which I have not looked at.

This is about a pocket universe that is also sentient and grows as energy is poured into it from those who visit. The more energetic they are - rowdy, noisy, dancing, happy etc - the bigger it gets and new things appear.

The visitors come through portals from other universes and are many and varied races and cultures. The universe /bar is clever in that there is an automatic translation scheme so you speak and understand everyone regardless of their language.

There are permanent inhabitants also who come through the chaos fog that surrounds the universe which is currently configured as a bar with some of the necessary suppliers eg a brewery. Some of the supplies though come through a portal, and there is one, of course, through in the Federal Witch's garden as this is a spin-off book from that series.

I really liked this concept and enjoyed learning how the universe operated in book 1. Book 2 went over some of the same concepts from the views of different inhabitants and thus lost some of the edge of the new. It provided the reader with the backgrounds which was useful but..

Book 3 was far too short, but I enjoyed the Clothier and how her sentient shop and house and tools worked. Good tip on the pin cushion!

Very satisfying beginning to a new series!

I enjoyed this book so much, that I bought the next 5, sight unseen. It does start off a bit rough but quickly become more readable. Part of the issue was the inconsistent use of contractions. If you want to assign that quirk to a particular character, that's fine, but it should be consistent throughout the piece. There were a few spelling mistakes but nothing major. The concept is fresh and interesting, the characters likable, if a bit largely drawn. I anticipate that the next book, "Grand Opening" will fill in the character's backstories and flesh them out.
A truly enjoyable book that I would definitely recommend to all science fiction/fantasy aficionados out there as it links elements of both genres in surprising harmony. Thank you, Taki!

Awesome collection of stories about another dimension

This book tells the stories about a bar serving food and drinks in a dimension that is also a sanctuary for weary Travelers and mercenaries.

The characters started out with traveling to this bar and finding out it is there sanctuary in this dimension. As they live in the bar increases its mass in the dimension. This is a fascinating Concepts involving the dimension in space called Badger hole bar or BHB. I would highly recommend this book anybody who like Paranormal, Federal witch, or Syfy books.

Great read

I was a bit leery of the premise, and the first few pages were strange. But the tale grew into a wonderful story, moving from tragic loss to one containing a lot of hope. I try not to give a lot of 5 star ratings, but I think this one deserved it. I enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to more about the BHB. And I hope to see lunch visits from the FBI and the Fergus the unicorn.

I don’t enjoy writing bad reviews, but I hate giving a low rating without also giving details that might help others decide whether a book might, or might not, be for them. So here goes:

On the good side, the bhb is a fun character. The world is incompletely built, but definitely a place many people would like to visit. And, in the rough year or so we’ve had, this is a very relaxing read. For those reasons, I don’t regret the time I spent reading Thru the Badger Hole, I just wish it had been better.

On the not-so-great side;
1) The book needed further editing. There were many typos and quite a few mangled, incomplete sentences scattered throughout the book.
2) The author tells, tells, tells when they should show. Telling instead of showing is not only dull, in some instances it’s unforgivably lazy writing where it was easier to tell than to write a scene to show.
3) There is no plot structure to be found here, which is by far the most amateurish element of the book.
4) The author turns the male, ex-military, main character into a hand-wringing victorian damsel.

This last really annoyed me. Surprising, but good, things consistently happen at the bar. After the sixth or so time this happens, the main character still treats the surprise as if it is worrisome and upsetting.

Also, never once does the author describe a single piece of work the main character does. It made me realize how smart Spider Robinson was to make Callahan the bartender in his Callahan’s Bar series.

All in all, while I don’t regret the time I spent at the Badger Hole Bar, I can’t bring myself to read the next one.

Loved it!

I absolutely love stories about symbiotic relationships between a being and entities in other dimensions. This is only the third author who has written stories along these lines. Love it!! Keep 'm coming.

New Beginnings

Finally, a much anticipated beginning to the BHB.
I have been so curious of the origins of the bar and it's people since it was mentioned in several other books and series by the authors.
I anxiously await more from this series.

Although, this book started off slow the world building and interesting people kept me reading. The main characters and the secrets slowly revealed made me want to find out what happened next and I am waiting impatiently for the next book.

Enjoyable

An easy and entertaining read. Looking forward to the next one keep them coming. Fyi the editing was good for the first 75% of the book. It's like at the 3/4 point someone have up. Typo after typo.

Simple read, simple characters.

This is just a very simple, predictable book. A Tweener read? It's just amazing how everything just gets effortlessly resolved. Unlikely coincidences abound.

It was very slow in the beginning, I almost gave up on the book. But I got to chapter 10 and only then started to enjoy the book. I'm glad I didn't give up on it. Some people might like the beginning of the book.

Boring.

I really tried to get into this story, but couldn't. It's all telling. Minuscule dialog, nothing to grab the reader's attention. Not worth even one xtzr.
