Welcome back to Holmestead, England ~ where a mysterious book, a cryptic note, and murder shake up this picture postcard village.
When Maggie Mulgrew finds an old book in the box she buys from a local charity sale, she has no idea that her discovery is about to set off a chain of events.
Events that will end in murder.
Now she has to find out why a book is important enough to kill for, and fast, before someone else becomes a victim.

Cate Dean has been writing since she could hold a pen in her hand and put more than two words together on paper.
She grew up losing herself in fantasy worlds, and now creates her own worlds, infusing them with adventure and magic.
When she's not writing, she travels to places that inspire her, having her own adventures, and reads pretty much anything she can get her hands on.
There ~ I got the official biography out of the way. I love to write, and yes, I have been doing it most of my life. I've made up stories in my head for as long as I can remember, and I’m thrilled to be able to bring those stories to life, and share them with you.

I really enjoyed this second book in the Maggie Mulgrew series. It's utterly lovely to read a series that is set in an English country village with all of its quirky characters and unique shops. Maggie, an American transplant who inherited her great-aunt's house and business in Holmestead (which makes the best it can among the tourist trade as a village with "Holmes" in its name).
In the first book, Maggie comes to like an archeology professor, Pembroke Martin, who was accused of murder but was found to be innocent and he, Spencer (Maggie's best friend and employee in her antique shop, the Ash Leaf), and Maggie uncover the culprit. Now Martin (he hates his first name) is ensconced in Maggie's flat above the shop and, as her "gentleman-caller," assists her and Spencer in the latest intrigue.
I'm growing to enjoy the villagers more and more, and I just wish that the mysteries were longer; they seem to end so quickly! They are only $3 on Kindle, but I'd hate to buy more...yet they're not available through my library system (I checked it state-wide). So I'll see if I continue reading this series when I have so many other series begging for my attention. ;)
I saw a few reviews state that this 2nd in the series wasn't as good as the first, but I do not agree. More info. comes through on Martin's background, Maggie's relationship to other residents of the village, and we find out who the ghost, in her shop, is. There are a couple of murders, murder attempts, vandalism, and mystery surrounding a household journal Maggie receives as part of a church sale purchase. What is so important about a journal of household account!?! It's important enough for murder to be committed, that's for sure.
I really am enjoying getting back to reading this series, so novel #3, here I come!
I love this series! The characters are great and I love finding out more about them in each book. It has plenty of "keep you guessing", in each book. I feel like I am right there in England, I enjoy hearing the English language. I found out that the third book should be out sometime in March! I can't wait to read more of Maggie's adventures!
A very enjoyable little mystery, the second in the series, about an American woman who inherits an antique shop from her aunt. Maggie buys a box of various older items from a church sale. When she finds an old journal, she tries to return it to the donor. This starts a chain of events that ends in murder. I like the continuing romance between Maggie and ex-Professor Pembroke Martin.
As one of the characters observes..there seems to be a quote a few murders for such a small town. Not to worry, there is a competent police force, American Maggie Mulgrew, her friend Spencer and sexy ex-professor Martin to find the culprits and solve the mysteries. Oh, yes, there is the ghost of Maggie's ancestor around to help, too.
Maggie gets an old book with a note in it in a box that she purchased from a rummage sale. When she tries to return it to the rightful owner because she thinks it's a mistake, he practically chases her out of his house and says the book is cursed.
Late the man is found dead and Maggie wonders if he was right.
At least I did. Ms.Dean aka the wind has a delightful series in her Maggie mysteries. sp far I am convinced they all have a ghost of a chance to be as enjoyable for those of us who like dose of whimsy.
I choose three stars verses four because enough hugging by Spencer and Martin seemed a little much. It seemed to slow the pace of the plot some. The series is good if you're looking for a light cozy escape.
Maggie, Martin & Spencer are caught up with murder and murder, an unknown ghost, and a set of mysterious books! Oh-and did I mention a romance in the making?
Really enjoyed this book. its great to see the characters evolve and we learn more about Maggie. I really enjoy seeing how she and Martin are learning to trust each other and how their relationship grows. looking forward to reading the next adventure for Maggie, Martin and Spencer.
I liked this book as it was an easy and quick read. Set in a small village, this story has murder, greed, and romance. It also has a resident ghost. I liked it well enough to read the next book in the series. The story is well written and therefore a pleasure.
Cute, suspense filled, full of humour. Really enjoying this series.. Characters are great, setting is fun and the characters are like people you want to know..
This was alright. Not great but fine. I'm not really interested in continuing to the series. I enjoy reading these but they always end kind of meh. I will say the ghost was more present in this one.
I enjoyed this and only criticism is that some of the dialog/ interaction between Spenser and Maggie seemed a bit repetitious. Nice characters and plot twists.
