Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
Patricia Briggs was born in Butte, Montana, to a children’s librarian who passed on to her kids a love of reading and books. Patricia grew up reading fairy tales and books about horses, and later developed an interest in folklore and history. When she decided to write a book of her own, a fantasy book seemed a natural choice. Patricia graduated from Montana State University with degrees in history and German and she worked for a while as a substitute teacher. Currently, she lives in Montana with her husband, children, and six horses and writes full time, much to the delight of her fans.
I bought this edition -- the first three books in this series -- on a whim, figuring it would be something quick and fun to read between other books. I was a bit worried that it was going to be a Laurel K. Hamilton knock-off, . Though it is certainly in the same vein (ha!) of Hamilton and Kelley Armstrong, et al., I think it's certainly strong enough to stand on its own. Where it diverges from Hamilton the most is that it's not an orgy. I know that's going to disappoint some of you, and I'm not saying it doesn't have its fair share of sexual tension. But it's more realistic with it. Briggs doesn’t go overboard describing the “beefcakes” the way some authors (ahem, Hamilton) do; they are there, but you can flesh them out to your tastes, which is a good choice on Briggs’ part. The Anita Blake books are brief periods of fighting, zombie raising and sleuthing in between bizarre sexual and quasi-sexual encounters, and entertaining as that may be, sometimes it's just too much. With Mercy, you have a strong female lead who is independent almost to a fault. She doesn’t let people push her around, she’s strong and she’s smart, and she doesn’t know when to give up, which is fabulous in a series like this.
The paranormal elements in the books are believable and not over done, and have elements of real world nature in them. Briggs did her homework, thought out the world, and it shows. I think that she was smart, too, in not keeping her paranormal characters too much in their own world. The fae have “come out” to the public a decade before the story begins, the werewolves are on the verge of coming out, and though the vampires have no plans of coming out, that’s not surprising, as they eat people. The struggles of the paranormal community to be accepted rather than feared and attacked by the human world is realistic as it mirrors humans’ own very real civil rights struggles; the addition of werewolf Warren and his lover, Kyle, adds a nice layer, as it links the two struggles and shows tension among the werewolves, too. Like real life, even those who are targets of bigotry themselves can be bigots themselves. Briggs makes great layered choices, adding depth and realism to bolster her stories. Certainly an author to watch.
I love having the first three books together in a hardcover as the individual hardcovers are impossible to find and even if you can find them, they cost a fortune. This is the next best thing! My mass market paperbacks had fallen apart 🤣.
Moon Called--It took me a little to get into this book but once I did I was hooked. I really like Mercy and she isnt too self concieted like most females are in urban fantasy. I love how she is different buy being a coyote and not a wolf. Brigg's does a great job of setting up the town and story in this book. All of the characters are ones that are memorable and very likable.
Blood Bound--This book was centered around the vampires in the town. I like how instead of focusing on just the werewolves that she involves other paranormal creatures, like the vampires and the fae. It was an interesting book especially since Samuel is staying with Mercy. The tension between her, samuel, and adam is killer but makes it worth the read.
Iron Bound--This one focused on the Fae. Mercy's mentor,Zee, gets arrested for a murder that he doesn't commit and she vows to help him out. I like that Brigg's went a little more into the Fae in this book since in the others it was all secretive. I'm glad that samuel finally realized that he doesnt love mercy in "that" type of way. Needless to say i'm happy that mercy and adam will get together now but i hated how the book ended, so now i have to go get the next so i see what happens!
Moon Called Date I read this book: September 29th, 2009 ★★★
There were times I totally loved this book and couldn't put it down and other times when I just could be bothered. Also small continuity errors with Mercy's gun at the end really got on my nerves. Fun book though, I like Mercy and the world she lives in and will definitely read more (could that be because this is an omnibus? Well, yes, but I would buy them separately if I didn't have them in this one handy volume...) Plus I'm sick of kids being introduced only to be kidnapped, cliches don't usually float my boat as the crux of a plot. Finally, I had issues with Buffy being mentioned. I should really say, I love Buffy and I love that the vampire Stefan loves Buffy, but I think in a world were fairies have been public knowledge since the 70s that a show like Buffy would be inherently different.

Vampires are trouble. Rogue vampires are even worse. But what can Mercy do when the vampire who's asking for help with the rogue is one of the few people she considers a friend. Plus, she does "technically" owe him a favor. So in the middle of the night Stefan gets all prince of darknessed out (not his usually look, he drives a replica Mystery Machine after all) and asks Mercy to be his "watch dog," literally. He wants her to be in her coyote form so that she can observe this vampire interloper without being found out. Turns out Stefan didn't lay all his cards on the table and it's not long before they're in a hotel full of dead people and Mercy is watching the rogue vamp kill an innocent in front of her eyes while Stefan is in some sort of mesmeric trance. Luckily they get away from this vamp Littleton alive... but there was an odd smell about him. Demon.
As it happens the local vampire seethe, after this latest attack, is out for blood. Did they think it would have been bad form to mention the first attack? Vampires, they hold their cards so close. But Stefan is the easiest target, not the elusive Littleton, to pin the blame on. But after a trial the seethe sees that the this demon ridden vampire is dangerous. A dark wizard who was turned vampire. It can't be long till there is no way to stop this evil. In an extremely rare showing of solidarity, the vampires and the wolves agree to work together to bring down this threat in their midst. But things seldom go to plan and soon those on the hunt are captured and Mercy and her "special gifts" are all that can help. The problem with being a walker is there really aren't a lot of other walkers about to discuss powers and abilities with. No little support groups sitting around say, isn't it cool that I can turn into a four legged creature instantly without pain unlike those slow werewolves. Not to mention magic doesn't seem to affect me and I have all these other abilities... abilities that the Vampires seem to know more about that she.
Temperatures rise, tempers flare, and the death toll mounts, and Mercy has no choice but to do Marsillia and the vampires bidding. She must stop this evil. With a little help from the Fae, who possess a nice vampire killing blade, she's on the hunt for Littleton's lair. Much like tracking a serial killer she hones in on the epicenter of the killings. Placed in a situation where she's fighting for her life, will Mercy go beyond what the vampires ask of her when she realizes that there's more to this Littleton than at first glance? And will this put her in more danger than she could ever have imagined?
Having read the first book in the Mercy Thompson series, I knew that I'd eventually get around to the next book. But due to my mediocre feelings about Moon Called when I read it back in 2009 I wasn't in such a hurry to get around to Blood Bound. How wrong I was to wait! But then again, it was worth it, and perhaps it's what made my love of this book that much stronger. When I picked up Blood Bound I was enthralled, like Stefan in Littleton's mesmeric gaze. I have since devoured all the books in the series like a starving vampire and am craving River Marked like a junkie. I can't really place my finger on why I finally connected to this series in a way I didn't the first time around. Perhaps it was knowledge of the characters and not having to be introduced to the world and already having a sense of it. Or just the lack of military people and cages and kidnappings... the first book was kind of a hard starting point for me. Also the vampires are great. It's not like I'm vampire obsessed or anything, despite being a Sookie/Buffy/Angel addict. But the vampires were more compelling. They were somehow more familiar to me and therefore easier for me to embrace. Plus, never underestimate the power of a defined villain. Having a source of evil combined with great power and couple that with a traditional serial killer hunt. I was on the edge of my seat! Definitely a highlight of my years reading.
Iron Kissed Date I read this book: December 19th, 2010 ★★★★★
Never be in debt to a fairy. Never say thank you to a fairy. But most importantly, when you borrow something from them, just do what they tell you, nothing more. Mercy did a little something "more" and now has a debt to pay off. The fae have been sequestered in their own little camps ever since they came out a dozen or so years earlier. Whether it was for their protection or ours is a matter for debate. The fae are a secretive lot, not trusting the police or government. So when a killing spree happens in the Walla Walla Reservation, they aren't likely to turn to the police. They'll police there own. But sometimes it's good for a little outside help. This is where Mercy comes in. She knows enough to keep her trap shut. Plus there was that whole "favor." Also, in human form, but even more so in coyote, she has remarkable smell, which most fae lack. After persuading the rent-a-cop on duty who works for the BFA (Bureau of Fae Affairs), O'Donnell, Mercy is let into the reservation. Cookie cutter houses in perfect rows that surely are an illusion, or so her nose is telling her. From crime scene to crime scene she is led as she tries to sort out the various smells to find the one link. But her nose does tend to lead her into trouble and she stumbles past the glamors and sees the sea. The faries higher ups, the Grey Lords, are not going to like this one bit. And neither does Mercy, she can't figure out why the murders are happening. What is there link besides the person who killed them?
Things don't start to look up for the fae when Zee is arrested for the murder of O'Donnell, the reservations guard. Zee won't suffer in prison like other fae, seeing as he has an affinity for the substance that harms most, iron. Despite Zee's protestations that Mercy is done with this case, that she can't stick her nose into fae business anymore, she's not one to listen. She's a very nosey coyote, especially when her friends are at stake, despite the Grey Lords ruling that Zee is the fall guy. Soon she's embroiled in anti fae groups with an Arthurian nut Tim and has attracted a fae artifact to her, the walking stick comes and goes as it pleases, but if she wanted to have lots of sheep, she's all set. But maybe this loyal stick is a clue. What if the other victims were also guarding objects of power? Objects that held magic so great that they are a danger. Magic that not even the fae can do anymore in this waning world. Objects they will do anything to get back and to silence Mercy about. But in a world filled with the supernatural, sometimes it's just the plain natural that can do the most damage and can ruin your life. Just when Mercy had sorted through her feelings about Adam and Samuel, everything changes by the violent act of one human being.
The magical masquerading as the everyday. That which is normal posing the greatest threat. This book just completed my love of Mercy Thompson and became my favorite book in the series. The intermingling of fairy tales and myth becoming real, but in the most dangerous and threatening of ways. Fairy Tales are real. Just that thought sends chills down my spine. I love the idea that these simple bedtimes stories are really warnings. We see, more than before, how much power the fae have at their disposal and how nice they have been playing, without killing children and eating their bones, which many, I'm sure, want to do. There is more of an old world, mythic feel. The vampires, for the most part, just keep themselves to themselves with their little herd of sheep that feed them. The fae are an entirely different situation. They have been exposed to the world for a long time. Exposed in a way they controlled, just as the werewolves are trying to do. As meek and magicless. They spend everyday hiding what they are. And now, being attacked, they lash out and show their might. But their artifacts are even more dangerous. Because while the fae just protect them. When a power hungry human gets his hands on them, it shows that humans and their greed and avarice are far more of a threat than the fae are. Because the fae, while hiding their "monsters" are still known to be something "other" not far below the surface. Whereas a human as a monster... it just makes it that bit more scary. There's no way for Mercy to sense magic or otherness. There's no way for her to protect herself. What Mercy goes through and how she deals with what happens has made me connect to her on a new level. Seeing beneath her bravado, giving her vulnerability makes her more relatable. More like me, though I have never been through what she has on a human level. I've never had men fighting over me, which thankfully is resolved in this book on the flirty end of the spectrum, to the horrors of the attack at her garage. But I have had moments of panic and despair, and tearing down a little of her armor has made her a little more human.
After having bad luck with trying to find a decent book to read. I finally got my hands on this book. I'd been wanting to read the first book in the series (Moon Called) but couldn't find it anywhere. Then I was on my county library website and discovered Preying for Mercy which was the first three books of the series. I started reading it as soon as I got home that day. I was hooked after the first chapter of Moon Called. The book's plot developed quickly and held my attention the whole time. After reading Moon Called I was really glad I already had the next book (Blood Bound) right there. Blood Bound did and even better job of getting me hooked and keeping me interested. By the time I got to Iron Kissed (the third book)I knew i had found a new series for me to read and enjoy. Iron Kissed I think was my favorite of the three. And it has left me wanting to get my hands on the next book. The books are quick and easy reads. I really liked the main character Mercy Thompson. She is a walker that can change into a coyote. I liked it because Mercy is a tough but loveable character and I found myself relating to her feelings and her train of thought. I look forward to reading about Mercy's other adventures.
I think this is the first time ever I checked a book out of the library with a half-dressed woman on the front. :p A friend recommended this as a complete escape novel, which is exactly what I was looking for. I decided to give it a try, despite the cover, and was immediately hooked. Don't let the cover fool you, this book is an adventure, not a romance, and it's not trashy. There are romantic elements but we don't have to read any play-by-plays! There was some mild language, and of course, the whole premise of the book hinges on there being magical creatures still on the earth. But, it was an adventure & a mystery from about page 3. If you are looking for an escape, for pure "brain candy" with no redeeming qualities except that it will keep you up all night reading, then give this one a try!
Re-read this book (or set of three books) this week. I really enjoy Mercy as a heroine-- she's definitely brave, but not blessed of the strongest powers among her peers, and she's complicated without being annoying. I also like that she's not in her teens or early twenties-- not as much angst.
When I run across this at my local library that has been closed for a over a year due to the covis-19 outbreak I couldn't resist giving it another read. After all, I'm A huge Patricia Briggs fan. Being that I have already reviewed these books as individuals I'm just going to add my original reviews to this box set. I will always state that box sets are better just because you get multiple books in 1 reading and it enhances the series making it more entertaining.
Moon Called Patricia Briggs has not only awakened her usual adult readers, she sent out wolf call to young adult readers who love their werewolves in this first installment of “The Mercy Thompson Series”, Mercedes “Mercy” Thompson the Volkswagen mechanic. Mercy is the mechanic with an uncanny ability to shift forms as easy as taking a breath and finding trouble or chaos with the next.
Early on we get a sneak peeks of Adams feeling for Mercy upon his arrival when he declares Mercy to be His. With the declaration made the sparks fly as the tension grows when both Adam and Mercy throw the verbal gauntlet at one another. The raw passions you can feel burning between the two leaps off the page at you and leaves you eager for more.
My absolute favorite and will read again and again. I strongly recommend! It has outstanding qualities. The characters are wonderful and surprising and multi-dimensional. The writing is luring, engaging, and well-crafted enough to keep me interested from cover to cover and beyond. The plot is astonishing with twists and turns weaved into a well thought and planned story. There’s no pretense and romance was well balanced and done entirely correctly with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors and incredible, undeniable chemistry. Predictability is at an all-time low. With the exception of series based books that follow the same path but are just as good. Overall, Favorite, must read again, recommend!!!
Blood Bound Under the rule of science, there are no witch burnings allowed, no water trials or public lynchings. In return, the average law-abiding, solid citizen has little to worry about from the things that go bump in the night. Sometimes I wish I was an average citizen...
Mechanic Mercy Thompson has friends in low places-and in dark ones. And now she owes one of them a favor. Since she can shapeshift at will, she agrees to act as some extra muscle when her vampire friend Stefan goes to deliver a message to another of his kind.
But this new vampire is hardly ordinary-and neither is the demon inside of him.
The relationship between Adam and Mercy grows stronger in its own way, while her relationship with Samuel take an unexpected turn and brings them closer together than ever before. Passion, suspense, and determination fill the pages and have on the edge of your seat when yet another love interest is introduced in Mercy already confused love life.
Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot. The pretense and romance were well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors, and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!!
Iron Kissed Fantastic! The series just keeps getting better!Another great addition to the Mercedes Thompson series. P. Briggs did an excellent job creating a world that draws you in and characters you can’t help but get attached to.

I think I read the first of these books a very long time ago. As this is a three-novel collected book, it was a nice long read.
Mercy is a coyote shapeshifter. She was raised by the North American werewolf, the Merrok, Bran, who is hundreds of years old. She was to marry his son, Samuel, but Bran found out about it and told Mercy why Samuel wanted to marry her and Mercy ran away. Now, in her late 30s, Mercy lives behind the alpha werewolf for the local pack. Adam is a wealthy businessman with a daughter, Jesse, and an ex-wife.
In the first novel, the werewolves have not yet "come out" yet to the human population. However, Jesse gets kidnapped and that brings all the wolves out.
In the second book, the vampires, also not really out to the humans, have a Very Bad Vampire causing a lot of problems and Mercy gets dragged into it partially due to her friendship with Stephan, a vampire who has a Mystery Machine van.
In the third book, the Fae, who've been out for the longest, are being murdered. A couple of fae ask Mercy to check something out in the fae reservation and she winds up (a) attracting the attention of a very old, very dangerous fae, (b) trying to prove the innocence of one of her fae friends, and (c), attracting the attention of a human who has peculiar powers.
All three books were enjoyable and I did like that they were all contained in one hardback. I did wind up rolling my eyes at the "will she, won't she" as three men were after Mercy - two werewolves and one vampire. Other than that, I had a lot of fun reading these books.
This book entails the first 3 books in the Mercy Thompson series (Moon Called, Blood Bound and Iron Kissed). These books are fun, quick reads with an easy urban fantasy setting. They are in the paranormal rhelm of fantasy and each book opens the world to new and exciting creatures. If you can forgive some of the flaws in these books; mainly the fact that the werewolf world is primarily male dominated which includes the male ego and need for dominance, and the questionable accuracy with the Native American folklore, then this is a very enjoyable series. I really enjoy the work of Patricia Briggs and am not very "nit picky" when reading. I don't look for flaws in writing but rather enjoy the trip the author takes me on. This is (obviously) a work of fiction and I think the storyline and characters are exciting and endearing. I enjoyed each book and every relationship created between characters. Each book finds a new and exciting element of chaos. I don't find a repetitive pattern in them, but enjoy each new adventure the books bring.
I read and reviewed each of the volumes collected here separately, so this is basically just for my own records. All of the books got three stars from me, hence the average.
There's a lot to like about this series. I enjoy the wide range of paranormal beings and societies and the interactions between them and I enjoy how Mercy has to constantly navigate them. I also like her in general - she's practical, and it's great to have a blue-collar worker as the hero of one of these series for a change. That being said, I was not at all delighted by the love triangle - something which thankfully got wrapped up in Iron Crossed with a minimum of drama and hurt feelings, so belated credit for that - and I wish that Mercy had more women friends. Well. More implies that she has some, and she doesn't. She gets on well with the love interest's teenage daughter, who is an actual child, and it looks like Honey may have a slowly increasing role, but otherwise there's really no one. I kind of side-eye her for that, to be honest.
One of my all time favorite series. So well crafted. Easy to pick up. The world is rich and detailed without being bogged down. Characters you care about from the start. All from a female's point of view who isn't a fussy girl. The werewolves are believable and weirdly relatable. The vampires are dark without the erotica nonsense. Humor is infused in just the right places. Just a great read.
I love the Mercy Thompson book series. It has everything that draws me in. A great heroine who is both strong but needs help. A bit of comedy that makes me laugh out loud from time to time. A great world of paranormal. And overall good story telling.
This book encompasses the first three Mercy Thompson books. Very good reads and will have you wanting more. Which is good because there is the whole series to go through. Trying listening to the audio and reading the book at the same time. Mercy will jump off the pages.
Moon Called -- I love this book! Mercedes's story is full of action, mystery, and comedy. I love the characters and the author's writing/ storytelling /style a lot. Mercedes Thompson is one of the most refreshing leading female characters I have ever read. I honestly love so much about her that if I listed them all, this review would be way too long. All the other characters are just as interesting and refreshing as Mercy. Moon Called pulled me in from the first chapter and had me glued to each and every page I turned.
Blood Bound - I enjoyed this installment and found it just as entertaining as the first. This series is becoming very addictive. Blood Bound is a little creepy and full of interesting tidbits. This story was a bit slow. However, it picked up the pace quickly and enthralled you. With Mercedes getting into trouble or into other supernatural creatures's businesses, as usual, her life gets complicated. I love her and Adam's interactions. They make you smile and laugh. I can't wait to see where Briggs takes this series.
Iron Kissed - Though this story was good and had some interesting developments, I just didn't fall in love with it. I am glad that this isn't the first book of the series because if it was, then I probably would have never read past it. However, it being the third book makes it easier for me to continue the series and look past its faults. I have a few issues with this installment. Of all my complaints, only one really stands out the most. This book should have a warning label that informs readers that it contains a rape scene. I do, however, like that the author didn't put a detailed description of the event and mainly glossed over it. I am all for torturing your characters and hitting the emotion button for readers. However, this scene just didn't really fit into the flow of the story. It upset the balance and ruined the brilliant tone set for the Mercy series. Briggs will probably recover this upset in the next installment, and things will hopefully return to normal.
Iron Kissed is the reason this book received its four star rating. By its self, Iron kissed would be three stars.
Filled with surprises and twists throughout, along with love, temptation and loyalty, Mercy is the strong female heroine you'd love to have for a friend. The stories are dark, and complex but Mercy is surrounded by friends who love her deeply (and some who WOULD like to love her deeply *wink*wink*) and do their best to help her out. Even with all that love and help, she does a good bit of butt-kicking on her own, and it's refreshing to find a woman who isn't afraid to handle tough situations herself.
I love how Mercy's one of a kind in this story. I love the pack lifestyle and the way that everyone's trying to keep her safe but doesn't quite happen. One of the best mix paranormal series around. I like that each book leads on to the next. I love that Adam is hard to read at times but deep down just doesn't want to be hurt again and mercy does come across as flighty at time. This series is one of the best fantasy paranormal scary and romance all rolled into one series if you haven't already read it your missing out.
This is book 1-3 of a series. I am checking it out to see if I like the writer or not. If I don't it goes on paperback swap LOL
I LOVE THIS SERIES!!! I can't wait to get more of this series. The main character is really easy to like a cheer for. I thought it was going to be like other books where they drag out the two men in love with the main character for several books, but it actually tied it up pretty well. I like how it isn't mainly a love story, but a mystery as well. Great read.
i am love, love, loving this series! i just went out and bought the last 3 to the series, cause i am dieing to know what happens with adam and mercy. i already know they get married (one of the summaries ended up spoiling that), but i am anxious to see how it happens. i cant wait to see what happens to samuel either, and where stefan has been hiding. anyway, i am adoring the series!
If you enjoy the vampires-and-werewolves genre, you'll probably enjoy these. They're light and fluffy enough. More grown-up than the "Twilight" books, less pornographic than the "Sookie Stackhouse" series. Plenty of action, nothing overly challenging. But also nothing original, ground-breaking, or outstandingly clever, either. Call it entertaining. Diverting.
First book- Moon Called Rating: 3/5 While I enjoyed the first book, I ended up finding out what happens in the next two books (mainly the third one) and so I have decided not to read the other two books in this bind-up. I have a little review of Moon Called on my blog: http://wolfsecho.blogspot.com/2014/04...
This book is what I own and is a compulation of books 1-3 of the Mercy Thompson series. I love it when they combine books like this! It makes it easy to read and easy to have on my ever growing book self.
I truley enjoyed all three of these books. She kept each story interesting in its own way. It was a fun read with a lot of different characters and many action scenes and some romance. I cannot wait for the next one to come out.
I love this book. I didn't know it was 3 in one though until recently. I just bought the 4th book and I really want to get them all because these are worth having in your collection. MUST READ!!! I'm also glad that her little love triangle works out in the end.
Picked this series up on the recommendation of a friend who knows my taste in the preternatural. This omnibus edition of the first 3 books was a great introduction to Patricia Briggs and Mercedes Thompson. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
This book has the first 3 in the series all in it. The story is about a walker (shape shifter not a were) named Mercedes aka Mercy. I loved it! The first story is mainly about werewolfs, the secind vampires and the third the Fae. all awsome
